BECAREFUL: They scammed my friend’s Debit Card and started making«purchases» of $ 75 dollars each daily in the restaurant to take that money out of the account.

This subway has a lot of improving to do. This particular spot used to be terrific, it had friendly staff that used to know me by name, would greet me with a smile, and would even get me laughing. So I just can’t understand how this place could change so quickly, but it sure has and its gone far far down hill. I’ll start by stating the obvious, it’s a subway, sandwiches don’t vary much across-the-board, so I’m not here to talk about that. I’m here to address the most awkward experience I’ve ever had at a subway. The awkward tension in the room was practically palpable. This stems from a huge language barrier that left me second guessing everything even my own decisions. To further this awkward exchange the music that normally plays in the shop was off. I swear just ordering my sandwich was like talking someone through a jenga game, blindfolded, in the library. Scratch that, that would probably be easier.

Ugh I’m embarrassed to even be reviewing a Subway, but here goes. I had a $ 3 coupon for ANY6-inch sandwich, so I decided to be frugal for the day and stop in since I live pretty close to here. I was expecting to get something decent since their normal prices aren’t even really that cheap. I got a steak and cheese, and they barely put any meat in it. The wheat bread made it so dry, and I barely enjoyed it. I don’t think that it was worth it, even with the coupon. There are so many other sandwich/sub shops in the area that aren’t that much more expensive. Usually a sub at other sandwich shops will run you around $ 6 – 8, but they are so much bigger and taste much better.

Subway has falled two stars as of yesterday. A month ago my girlfriend and I began planning a 4th of July party to be held at our house. One of the idea we had was to get a 6-foot sandwich but as the day got closer we realized that with the number of guests we were having a sandwich platter was more appropriate. So about a week before the party I called up my local Subway shop, asked the price, how much noticed they needed and if they’ll even be open on the 4th to pick-up. The price for one sandwich platter $ 32.99, 24 Hours notice and the would be open on the 4th for pick-up. So, Saturday morning I walk into Subway and place an order in-person because I was not comfortable placing an order on the phone. Why? Well, most of the staff that currently works here have very thick accents and I believe there is a barrier with the language. Being in-person I though would make the process a bit easier. Yes and no. My order was written down on receipt paper along with my name, contact phone number and the time* I would be coming on Sunday to pick-up the sandwiches. The man behind the counter said I was all set and he needed nothing else, then as I begin to walk out he says, «Oh, Wait! What vegetables, bread, cheese and dressing would you like???» I reply, «Lettuce, White & Wheat, American Cheese, no dressing.» Then I hop into my car and head home. Sunday, all day long with my girlfriend I got things for the party ready then my watch alarm goes off and it is time to pick-up the sandwiches. It doesn’t take me more than 10 minutes to arrive and I walk in and wait at the register since I don’t have an order to place. A woman is making sandwiches for a few customers while the other Subway staff was talking on his cell phone in the seating area. Once he finished making his call I told him I was picking up a sandwich platter. His smiling face changed from a «Hello» to, «Oh, shit. What sandwich platter??» He continues to say, «Nobody made it.» AREYOU F*#KINGKIDDINGME?! You had 24 hours to make the bloody platter! Still smiling at me like it was no big deal he says that he’ll start making it right then and there; Well, YEAH! Thankfully, it doesn’t take a lot of genius to make 5 sandwiches but he was lucky I wasn’t in a major rush. Suddenly, I realize as he’s preparing 5 sandwiches that he didn’t even ask what I wanted. I go up to him asking if he even know what I wanted in the sandwiches and what kind. He shows me a green 8.5×11 inch piece of paper with all the details of my order. And in his this Indian or Pakistanian accent he goes, «You were lucky that these aren’t hard to make.» Lucky? Lucky? Jesus Christ! I expected my platter to be ready as soon as I walked in! Pretty upset I asked if I could get a discount considering that my order should have been ready when I walked in. Thankfully they were happy to give me a discount. The only upside of this was that my sandwiches were really fresh.

Guess what, it’s a Subway! I go here for decently tasty and healthy cheap eats. Namely the spicy Italian $ 5 footlong. If adventurous I’ll even get chips and a drink for a grand total of $ 8. Staff here are reasonably friendly. English is not their first language, but as long as you speak clearly and know what you want, they’ll do it. Only once did the guy apparently misunderstand me and put light mayo on my sub. Not worth the argument, so I took it and ate it and it wasn’t any worse than standard Subway. Location is pretty convenient for me and it’s one of few cheap eats in Newton Center.(Others are slices from Bills or next door at Tango Mango)

When one thinks about Subway, they usually think about 6 inch/footlong sandwiches in various varieties, right? Well, the Newton Centre franchise obviously didn’t get the memo that in order to make said sandwich, one needs BREAD. So, upon my 6pm trip to Subway(prime dinner time), I am told that they are pretty much out of every kind of bread(save for a few 6 inch slivers). Are you kidding me!!! Then again, I shouldn’t be surprised. This is the same Subway that puts away the meatballs at 4PM, as it’s too much of an effort to heat them up after this time… Fortunately there are plenty of other places to grab a quick bite in Newton Centre… places that actually stock enough food. Half a star!

Yep, it’s Subway. I worked in Newton Centre for a year, so I would occasionally stop in here. It is what any Subway is. Unexciting sandwiches made the way you want them for affordable prices. One downside is that there are sometimes sandwich-makers working here who don’t understand English, making it pretty hard for people to order their sandwich and toppings/condiments/etc, and therefore holding up the line and slowing down what should be a fairly speedy process. But, there have also been some friendly people working there, so I guess it balances out. Bottom line, it’s Subway.

Ehh, I’m not totally into subway but I guess it does the job. If I were in Newton Center I probably wouldn’t go here, but apparently people do– check out the guys waving in the window. GOODFOR: fast, cheap food.
