Loved it! I have a daughter who is dairy free, and they had so many delicious dairy free sorbets! Staff was super nice, and there was no line, unlike Ben and Jerry’s.

Good treat on a warm day! Not the best gelato I’ve ever had, but definitely milky and tasty.

On a hot day like today, Cold Fusion was perfect. The $ 4.31 for a small gelato was well worth the expense. The peanut butter brownie gelato was creamy, indulgent, and refreshing. The staff was very helpful and offered to let us try whatever we wanted.(The blackberry merlot does taste like wine, fyi). I will definitely go back next time I am in Newport!

Stumbled across this place on Friday and was impressed with the selection, willingness to allow us to try as many flavors as we wanted and their sorbet choices which was described as dairy free, gluten free and vegan friendly. As my girlfriend is lactose intolerant she enjoyed a strawberry, lime and mint sorbet and I got the bourbon vanilla ice cream. Both were excellent. We returned to Newport two days later and I decided to Unilocal for the best ice cream place and we ended up back at Cold Fusion. This time she went with raspberry sorbet and I got salted caramel ice cream, both excellent again. Highly recommended.

We came in the off season, so the gelato choices were quite limited. I had a really good Spumoni, it’s a unique flavor that you don’t see too many places, so I was thrilled to order it! My boyfriend’s chocolate hazelnut was pretty standard. It was priced on the higher side of most gelato places, but it’s a tourist town, so it’s expected!

Thanks Lee! Your kindness and amazing customer service made my day! I feel like a part of the family every time I walk in. If you want some spectacular ice cream or gelato you have to try this place!!! Especially liked their lavender honey!

gelato is apparently a controversial subject; i personally prefer ice cream more, but there was no way in hell i was gonna wait in a 20 person line at ben and jerry’s, and i like supporting my local businesses. the two people working behind the counter were clearly the boss and his employee; the boss was jovially handing out samples left and right, whereas the employee was passive but pleasant. i ended up going with the madagascar bourbon vanilla(the boss winkingly threatened to card me), which was not as boozy as i would have liked, but was still good. i have a tendency to like my boozy ice creams, and this one was just mediocre. my friend got the apple, and it tasted just like applesauce, but in gelato form. intriguing. all in all, this place hit the spot, but was pricey. -$ 4 for small cup/cone -$ 5 for medium -$ 6 for large –cash or credit –small shop, little space to sit

Hit or miss with their gelatos. Nice consistency and interesting concepts, but lacking in depth and flavor. Someone else mentioned they’re like ice cream rather than gelato, but even ice cream has more flavor. I tried the amaretto fig, which was nice enough if somewhat weak. I mean amaretto! Fig! These are bold, exciting flavors and I could hardly taste them! I was truly disappointed in the salted chocolate which was somehow simultaneously chalky and bitter and flavorless. Like they used cheap baker’s squares for their flavoring! I couldn’t finish it. Someone else mentioned their sorbets are good, and I will still try those, but like anyone who’s tried authentic Italian gelato, Cold Fusion doesn’t hold a candle. So sad, they seem like a great business and I’d love to support them.

DELICIOUS best gelato I have had this side if Italy! You’ll love this place. It’s absolutely worth a try and the servers are patient and they will let you sample a few gelato until you get the perfect one for you while still keeping the line moving so you are not waiting in line. A great experience overall!

It’s an east coast v. west coast gelato throw down! Not really, but I’m a Californian who lives in an area packed full of gelato options, so I was definitely curious to see how the product is handled in the east. Overall, they didn’t disappoint. I kept in mind that this shop is smack dab in the middle of the busiest, most touristy area of Newport, so that would account for any lines or inconveniences in parking. The shop itself is small, simple and quaint. The jovial gentleman behind the counter was more than happy to hand out samples and was a good salesman. Over my ten minute wait, I didn’t see a single person walk away empty-handed, and believe me, there were some indecisive people in line. The gelato itself was a little more creamy and a little less sweet than I’m used to. I enjoyed the vanilla bourbon the best. The only let down — and maybe this was just a matter of timing and what they had in stock — was that they just had four options and two of those were takes on vanilla. Whatever the case, it’s a reliable option for a sweet treat while you check out the shops!

Tasteless gelato, waste of calories. I was pretty irritated at wasting calories and money on this. Do NOT walk by Ben and Jerrys for this place, no comparison. I tried chocolate strawberry, sweet cream, and strawberry in a waffle cone. None of it tastes like much of anything. The waffle cone was so thin it was barely able to hold the gelato. very disappointing. I don’t give out one stars too often but this deserves it. The kid working the counter was nice so that is worth one star.

The true gelato snobs may not be impressed, but I had a great experience. I was most intrigued by the combination of flavors: chocolate covered strawberry, peanut butter brownie, blueberry and lavender, chocolate and hazelnut, maple and habanero(which was my favorite). I thought every sample I had was delicious – maybe not angels singing level of good, but I definitely made the«oh wow» face. In addition, the servers were extremely friendly, upbeat, and nonjudgemental when it came to giving out samples. They even participated in an ice bucket challenge by providing the materials for a customer who asked if he could dump ice water over himself in front of their store. And finally: the amount of gelato per serving is truly American! Huge scoops, well worth the price, and I look forward to returning.

5 stars for the sorbet… Minus 4 stars for cleanliness!!! Add 1 star back bc I didn’t get sick & gosh darnit, I LOVE their sorbet I wish the stupid place was cleaned & that I could UN-SEE the NASTINESS I saw in there!!! So conflicted! My stomach says«love» & my brain shouts«ick!!!» 2 cases of sorbet/gelato: one had an active gnat flying around in there. The other had TWO dead, smushed flying ants… Along the sides… God knows how many are buried in the actual gelato. GROSS! One of us pointed them out to the server & he just ignored it! Didn’t even acknowledge he heard it! Worse yet– he kept serving like it wasn’t there. Did he clean it? Nope. Maybe he wa saving it for cleaning time? Either way. Nasty. There were also flies & flying ants everywhere. Every other store had their doors open, why did this place have so many bugs? Does anyone care? The workers sure didn’t. Seems like the owner doesn’t either(as the workers didn’t keep the place clean) The gelato I find mediocre. Not impressed. But the sorbet– so good! The best I’ve had! I don’t even like sorbet! I discovered cold fusion gelato bc they served it at hemenways. The raspberry & the mixed berry were SO delicious, I called hemenways after the meal to ask where they got it… Then made sure to stop by when I was in Newport. The first visit, I didn’t notice any nastiness– got the strawberry rhubarb which was delish!!! I don’t even LIKE rhubarb! How amazing is their gelato when they get me liking two things I normally wouldn’t like: sorbet & rhubarb! But alas, now I can’t UN-SEE what I saw. The place is disgusting. Please sell ur stuff in the grocery store so that I can scoop my own!

I don’t know if I’m just being a gelato snob here, having traveled to Italy and eaten ample gelato there several times, or if Cold Fusion just is not as good as it gets. I will start by saying that I have bought the Peanut Butter flavor in the pint several times at my local Whole Foods. I definitely have enjoyed it and consider it to be a good, frozen gelato. Going into the shop on thames, its bright and the service is extremely friendly. I got the espresso flavor. To me it was barely strong of any type of flavor, and the speaks to the fact of how gelato is made in US as compared to other countries. However, I have had great gelato at Dolce Gelateria, it’s all in how it is made. It seems to me the way cold fusion makes it, their gelato loses a lot of it’s flavor in the process. The consistency is that of a great gelato but I was not really impressed. I understand you can’t get that close to the real thing unless you are in Italy. However, the team was flavoring samples at my local whole foods recently and I was startled when I found out I could not have the cappuccino chip flavor, why? Because it has gluten. Being confused as to what would make it contain gluten, the worker replied«the chocolate chips». Hmm? Normally chocolate chips don’t contain gluten, and if there is nothing else in the gelato with wheat, it makes me A. wonder what type of chocolate chips this place is using and B. maybe the staff are just ill informed. This is the experience that kind of put me off, being that I know most ingredients that contain gluten and chocolate isn’t one of them.

Crème Fraiche and passion fruit is another excellent combo! I would like to try the cantaloupe and cake batter gelato next time. I was bummed they didn’t have their boozy flavors… last time those were among the faves. Is it just me or have their portion sizes gotten larger? I got a large with three flavors and it was huge! Had to share it with my twin. But definitely get either two flavors or three flavors — like I said, it’s all about the flavor combos when it comes to gelato.

I can’t believe i’m giving a gelataria 3 stars… Lets start with the gelato. Pretty solid. I sampled pumpkin and mango which were both delicious but decided to stick with my normal gelato flavor, hazelnut. They had many traditional gelato flavors along with fruity sorbets. My only complaint with the gelato is that it immediately started to melt. Service — Just okay. A bunch of teenagers were working behind the counter on a Saturday night. The girl who served my ice cream did a terrible job and gelato was all over the side of my cup. Since the gelato also started melting immediately I was left with gelato all over my hands. It’s sad to even waste one drop of gelato. You can pay with either cash or credit. Also when ordering a small you can only get one flavor. Some places let you do two, but not here.

The Gelato and sorbet here is pretty good. My big peeve about this place is the fact they FINALLY started to except credit cards, but only if you spend over 10.00. Okay, I’m not going to spend that kind of money when I just want one scoop of ice cream. Secondly, if you’re going to post the 10.00 minimum bull crap, make sure to be consistent with the posting. Long story short, I went in there today expecting to use my card, saw the«10.00 minimum» sign, and then I ran down thames(Roughly 5 blocks) to the Bank of American ATM — Ran back to Cold fusion, ordered by chocolate sorbet(Which is amazing, I do admit), and while ordering some guy took out his credit card and paid for a Lime Ricky(Which is 4.00, I think), and the girl didn’t say a thing to him. I was a sad panda, but at least my Chocolate Sorbet was delicious.
