So far the food here has been really good. This is a chain restaurant whether people realize it or not. Typically I steer far and wide of any chains, I don’t care for the canned and frozen approach to food generally speaking. But it is what it is. This is a place I can go to, and finally get a good Bison burger out East, as I get these when I am out west at various places. The jumbalaya was so good, whether pre-made or not. We had eaten at Pat O’Brian and personally I thought the gumbo was very poor, so if I had to have Cajun food, I would prefer BJ’S over Pat O’Brian in NOLA(frozen, canned, I don’t care… BJ’S version of Cajun was better and much spicier and flavorful). I have a big pipe dream wish that restaurants would start making real rice, basmati preferably. It’s cheap, easy(with a rice cooker you can’t go wrong), and the texture and flavor is so superb compared to this mess of rice I find at chain restaurants. I don’t think most people even know how good rice can be to begin with so that is me being too idealistic, and not specifically directed toward BJ’S exclusively. Enough with the rice rant. BJ’s is really good, it’s worth it, and I love their wide selection of beer. I am glad I can visit it out East now instead of only out west. Who doesn’t love good BJ’s, right.

This establishment will never receive my business again. Let me just say first off that the food was decent, the service however was enough to lose me forever. The management seems to be non-existent. No one seems to hustle or move with any sense of urgency. We stood and waited at the front for five minutes before they could seat our party of four… right next to the door. Which was an open table the entire time we were standing there. Why it was so difficult, I have no clue. After being seated for 7 minutes without even being greeted by a server I had to find someone and ask for a server, still it took another 3 minutes to get someone to us. My wife requested ketchup with her French fries… this took another 5 minutes. It was not crowded on the Sunday when we came in. We weren’t asking for anything out of the norm and we were being rather polite especially considering the fact that we were having to flag down people to get them to do their jobs. Not really sure why people choose to work in the service industry if they aren’t prepared to serve. I highly recommend you do not come to this establishment.

Having been to numerous BJ’s locations on the West Coast I was so excited when I found out they were opening one in Hampton Roads. I’ve been excited to go and figured I’d take my sister for her first experience and go in just to order a Pizookie dessert. First impression: This is certainly NOT the same atmosphere that the West Coast BJ’s offer. It was one SMALL open room comparatively but really that’s not affecting my review, just not what I was hoping for/expecting that I came to love and appreciate from all the previous locations I’ve been to. We went inside and there was no hostess to be seen. We waited. waited. waited. waited. A couple staff members looked right at us and kept walking. Some staff members were standing around the bar and just completely ignored us. I should mention we went at 10:30PM and it was not even slightly crowded. We waited some more. Waited some more and finally after being ignored by all the staff(seriously, not even one person told us to wait that someone would help us in just a second, they made eye contact and just kept walking or kept talking at the bar). Isn’t the host/hostess supposed to kinda set the first impression of the place? Non-existent host and being ignored by the very staff that would probably have waited on our table. Nope. We turned around and left. Not sure I’ll even try giving this place another go. If they can’t handle guests when it’s empty, I’d HATE to see how they handle it during peak hours. My recommendation: Don’t bother with this location.

I am really impressed with this new restaurant/brewhouse in the Oyster Point area of Newport News. It is always a welcomed site to get a new place in my area and BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse has just been added to my regular listings. Located in the ever so changing Oyster Point Area BJ’s is one of the first businesses to open this area with PF Chang, Whole Foods and Zoe’s Kitchen to name a few that I am starting to see come together. When you first enter you are welcomed by a warm and inviting staff. There is a full bar to the right that is large and plenty of area to hang out and have some fun in. The atmosphere is open and fun filled with seating well-spaced so that you are not bumping into others, but at the same time you don’t feel like the space is wasted as well. The art work and décor of this place is also very refreshing and a little hip at the same time without really going overboard. I had the deep dish ravioli which was just perfect. Served in a deep dish pan with huge cheese filled ravioli and covered in meat sauce and cheese galore. I could not finish my meal and had to take the rest home for lunch the next day. My wife had the fish and chips and she loved the fact that they used shoe-string fries and the portions of fish was just perfect for her as well. The tartar sauce had a wonderful spice that was welcomed change as well. My daughter had the small sweet pig deep dish pizza, but they messed up her order and sent the mini instead. They figured it out while it was baking and notified us that they would still bring out the small which ended up getting packed to go as well. Everything was well prepared and well-presented and be back many more times to try other things on the menu. I also enjoyed, but didn’t partake of the in house brews and will try some next visit. BJ’s also offers a very inviting Happy Hour as well along with some Late Night Snack items as well. If I had to say anything negative was that our server seemed to disappear after bringing our check for a while and didn’t give the correct change was going to be part of her tip. Not a show stopper, but it was busy and she was very pleasant so that was just small stuff.
