Wow. What happened to this place? Nixs’ used to have excellent attentive, and professional staff members. We went in the other night and the hostess had a chip on her shoulder and was very cold. The waiter we originally started off with seemed decent and then he just disappeared and we were left with subpar wait staff. No utensils, food took forever to come out… and let me add the food was very unappetizing! After we received our check we must’ve waited 20 min hoping someone would take our card so we could leave! Nope. We had to go up to the bartender and ask for her to check us out. The manager came over and apologized and told us to please give them one more chance another night. Nope, sorry. There are much better food establishments in Newburyport that we will spend our money on for better food and service. This place isn’t going to make it.

The availability of wines was unbelievable. They didn’t have a non-California SAv Blanc. They didn’t have«red wine» yikes. Drink menu was limited. Maybe they are going out of business. Meatloaf was so dry inedible and probably days old and reheated, apologies left and right with every table it was laughable and sad because it was a great place. Owners are lost and can’t run the business. It would be an added bonus to turn on the gas fireplaces in December, please Your wines are horrible, fix this place!

Made a reservation via OpenTable for my Anniversary. Arrived at Nix’s and they informed me the restaurant was closed for a private party and I could eat off the bar menu — definitely not an option for an anniversary dinner. They did they not call me in advance and certainly didn’t make any accommodations for their mess up. I didn’t even eat there and can understand the low rating for this place.

I am so hoping they can get their sh*t together… they’ve changed things up, once again, and now the downstairs is strictly a burger bar, while upstairs offers a pub menu(with burgers on it?). They’re struggling to find their identity and it’s a shame. :(

We loved Ten Center Street, the previous incarnation of this restaurant, and mistakenly thought NIXs was similar. We were disappointed to find a small menu with very few entrée options(several sandwiches appeared in the main course section). Our appetizer, soup, and entrees were adequate, about 3 – 4 stars I guess, but the dessert, which the waitress claimed was the favorite, was awful. Little balls of heavy fried dough(‘donuts’) that tasted like they’d been fried with the haddock. Also, we went at 7pm on a Sunday night and there were literally two other tables there — the place was dead. That’s pretty unusual in Newburyport. We did see a burger menu with about 10 options on it — I think we’ll return with burgers as the plan and give it a try. Maybe adjusting our expectations will result in a better experience!

I usually don’t post reviews but often find them useful when choosing where to dine. We found this spot online and the reviews seemed ok so we gave it shot. It was not very busy and were seated right away. After 15 mins the waitress decided to say hello and take our order. We both received our sodas which were terribly flat and that was about it. We had ordered an appetizer along with an entrée for both of us but our appetizer never came out. We watched a couple sit down about ten minutes after we did and got their appetizer. So… we got up and left. All told… after sitting for 35 minutes and enjoying our flat coke… it was time to cut out losses.

Really enjoyed our meal here! Delicious food and lovely atmosphere out on the patio. Had the spinach salad and the baked stuffed haddock, husband had chicken under a brick. Both delicious. Family-friendly and a warm, casual atmosphere.

The food was fine, but the wait for it was TERRIBLE. 2 salads, cup of chowder and an order of mussels took 45 minutes to get! It was ridiculous. I looked around to see that it seemed a lot of tables were waiting. This was also the time that our server steered clear of our table. She only came back once our first course was delivered. the entrees came out much quicker, thankfully. The waitress did«thank us for our patience with the wait on the food» only when she dropped the check. I assume she wanted to get a decent tip out of it. She would have done much better if she mentioned that while we were waiting! Just tell me the kitchen is backed up, if I know I can wait, if I don’t I get aggravated and not appreciated at all. The food was fine. Nothing over the top, but it was a good meal. I will give it another try and update my review.

As frequent Newburyport-ians we were on the hunt for something new and were shamed we missed the new addition of NIXS, especially since it’s been here so long. After peaking at the menu we decided this was a great place to try. I asked our server if she would recommend the Steak Frits or Homemade Linguini and Clams, I mentioned how I was a sucker for homemade pasta. She mentioned how they are both favorites, so I went with the Linguini. I was initially dissapointed noticing that it didn’t look homemade, but knowing looks could be deceiving, I tried a few bites. Then someone who I learn later was the Asst. General Manager, stopped by to see how things were going and if we needed anything. While I appreciate that as an Asst. GM she must be busy, it was actually nice she stopped by at all. However, when I asked disappointingly if they ran out of the homemade pasts since I clearly was served a boxed linguini you replied with, let me go check she never returned? Our server was excellent, and busy so when she had the chance to come by she also asked how things were, I asked her the same question and showed her that I had literally 2 – 3 pieces of homemade pasta and the rest was obviously boxed. She said she would inquire, and again, never came back with a reply. I decided since I was hungry to just eat it because, while it was good,(not the pasta), I didn’t want it to go to waste. I certainly would have NEVER paid $ 23 for boxed linguini. The few small pieces of homemade were excellent and I easily justified the price for homemade. I was letting it go, however, cannot, because I am still seething that you had the audacity to not only warn a patron that you ran out of the homemade pasta, allowing them a chance to order something different, you simply ignored me repeatedly. I am an avid reviewer and really hesitate to write a negative review on NIXS because it seems like a great place. One we would frequent for the outdoor patio in the summer and the coziness in the winter. We found many meals of interest that we would want to try, however if this is how they run their restaurant I wish we knew so we could have saved the letdown and the money. I did send an email with the exact as written above and asked that she please, put themselves in my shoes. We’re not a lucrative couple, when we go out and plan to have a nice meal it’s an event we work for everything we have and spend. This was a waste to us.(Even if we were lucrative we wouldn’t have been happy about wasting money on this) I could have made this at home we go out to experience the things we can’t create ourselves.

Went here for a friends birthday and the service couldn’t have been any worse. Going in with a large group of people is difficult enough but was made even worse when the waitress originally stated she could split the checks but then only selectively split some. After splitting off a few peoples checks she left the original 20% gratuity on the left over bill, giving herself more than double the tip, plus what she’d got from the others. Not only was the tip doubled she added extra drinks to our tab. She then proceeded to leave us waiting for a long period of time to actually pay. When she finally did come out to help us she had taken her hair down, untucked her shirt, and taken her apron off. Very unprofessional, especially since she walked in and out of the kitchen with her hair down. Would not go back. Slow service and food wasn’t that great. Overall terrible experience.

Don’t listen to the poor reviews the food was top of the line, friendly efficient service, atmosphere was great! I was afraid to give this place a shot due to poor reviews but i was happy I did. Would most definitely go back! Not only is there parking which is a plus in Newburyport but the menu and food was great, loved the oysters and calamari appetizer. also the scallop entrée with kale corn and cauliflower out of this world!!! Will be back !!

Well… there’s «some» potential here. But honestly, it’s the homeliest bar you’ll EVER see. Menu is friendly. Bar is atrocious. Sonia at the bar is FANTASTIC, which makes it enjoyable. But seriously… restaurant needs to mature… significantly.

As you know by now I’m a dessert person I had crème Brulee. sp? Summer is a great server and despite them being out of the French Toast for brunch and habenero infused margarita I was pleasantly surprised with the other options our table shared the calamari and wings I suggest maybe one more sauce if there is 5 or more people. I has the Matty burger med well it was delicious my boyfriend had the fish tacos. I had the pomegranate sparkler with pom juice pama liqueur and muddled basil. I also had the blackberry whiskey drink garnished with blackberries I love this place ita my 3rd time here. I suggest to try it FORYOURSELVES.

The place was bustling, my first time here since they changed ownership. The male bartender was attentive & friendly. The place is attractive and inviting. We sat at the bar and I ordered the hanger steak special. After a normal wait time, the food arrived. My plate was completely cold, not warm, but cold. I’m a very easy to please diner and understand errors occur. I sent my food back & asked them to heat it up, a simple request. Second time the food arrived it was barely warm. Now, I’m ticked off; if someone sends something back it should go back out piping hot! At this point I was hungry and wanted to eat. The steak, barely warm, was as tough as shoe leather. I didn’t finish my plate. They must have a got a deal on horse meat or something because it was some of the worst I have ever had. I asked the bartender for a dessert menu, after several minutes of conversation I realized he forgot the menu. Perturbed, I barked for the check(he remembered to bring that!). They were gracious enough to take my entrée off our check; I would rather had a good meal. Usually, for a new restaurant, I would be forgiving and overlook their short comings. In this case they have a lot of poor reviews and I would say they are deserved. They are the highest priced restaurant in the area & there are entirely many(better) alternatives so close by. Wake up or close up!

I have given this place three tries. The first 2 times, I thought maybe they were still working out the kinks of opening a new restaurant. The truth of it is, Ten Center Street was dark, warm and intimate. Its a shame this place updated the interior. I think they are having a hard time finding a head chef, the food has been inconsistent every time I have been there. I think its actually gotten progressively worse. We miss you Ten Center Street. This place will not last.

Came here last night(Sunday) with my manpanion. It was just OK. Nothing memorable. The bartender didn’t have much of a personality. Not very welcoming. Nice enough, I guess. There was only one other party in the place so it wasn’t like it would’ve been hard to give individual attention. He had the fish tacos and I had the short rib tacos. He scored his a 5⁄6 out of 10 and I would say the same about my dish. There was just nothing special about them. Since I have a gift card, I will probably give it another shot.

Ordered the clam chowder and steak frites. Chowder was flavorful bit potatoes were slightly undercooked, still enjoyed it. Steak was cooked to order and tender. Pesto sauce with the steak was very tasty. Fries were very good as well. My wife ordered the rib tacos and those were a positive as well. Service was average. Both bartender and waitress were friendly but attentiveness could use some work. Waited about 10 – 15 mins for a refill of my beer and we were 2 of 4 people in the bar area at the time. This was the only lapse in service, it improved after I think the owner took notice. Overall I would go back but I wouldn’t expect to be blown away. So far a good change from the previous business.
FINEDININGISDEADATNIX… First thing my husband and I noticed was the lovely art work on the walls have been replaced with several obnoxiously large big screen TVs with sports playing– no less catering to the«guys» in baseball hats. The ladies and gentlemen of the Nix yester years have been replaced with the«20 something» legging wearing, cowboy boots wearing, highlighted hairs masses. If they are going to dumb down the menu– they may as well dumb down the prices. Apparently a hot dog and BLT are considered«entrees» and their prices are outrageous.
