If I could, I would give no stars! I bought a week of camp for my daughter at this YMCA and found out a couple days before she started that the camp was going to be at a nearby school(10 minute walk)! They also told us that they only swim once a week(Tuesday’s)! I bought it because it was at this nice place with swimming everyday and in reality it was at a schools yard all day! They didn’t go inside at all!!! 100 degree weather and no break from it! My daughter came home hot, tired, and red!!! I called the camp director in morning(nice guy but not helpful) and told him my concerns and he said he was going to see if they can get a room in the school for art? So I sent her for the second day, hoping it would be fixed? They cancelled the pool that day(too much chlorine) and he was unable to get a classroom for kids to get out of the heat because of insurance reasons!!! I think the health of these young kids is more important and it’s only getting hotter as we enter July and August! So, my daughter and her friend did not go back and I did get a refund. But WARNING… the camp is not at the YMCA! It’s outside ALLDAY in the HEAT!!! Pool is only once a week(if there isn’t anything wrong with it) and the kids have to walk 10 minutes to the YMCA to swim from 1pm to 2pm and walk back in this HEAT!!! I wouldn’t do that to a dog, let alone my 6 year old!!!

Cool place. I have been working out there for last two months and I love it. I just got my buddy hooked on it. The Y has December special for 12 free visits and Jan fees off for new members. The pace is clean and wide open in the morning. Seems that people using the gym respect the place and keep it clean(wipe down the equipment, keep things neat). The pool water temp is just right(it was cool last year fro some reason). Staff is always helpful and nice to deal with. I also hear that they have very good classes and instructors. Need to try one of them soon. Very convenient for DV.

As I have started the process of getting in shape I checked out this facility and was very pleased! Clean both indoor and outdoor, A very nice dance studio/cycle room, state-of-the-art elliptical and treadmill’s. I have yet to use the pool but am glad to see it very inviting and more excited that it’s indoors. The front desk girl Fiona was highly knowledgable about the fees and programs they offer for low income family’s and was very friendly. All in all I am reconsidering going back to 24 hour and considering the miller family y.m.c.a. Instead

I just retired and joined the Y in Newbury Park. I now attend Yoga and Pilates classes weekly with excellent, highly qualified instructors. The YMCA is a great place to get healthy and make friends. Carol

Many people may want a large gypm w/lots of equipment. This is not a Golds or Spectrum, but has all the equipment needed, all kept up in good condition. The smaller facility makes it more of a family than just a gym. We have been members since the beginning and have seen many staff changes, some unfortunate and probably due to the fact that it is a small facility and could not offer the benefits of a larger company. They have made new upgrades recently(e.g., pool renovation, gym renovation). We participate in different activities thru the Y(swim team, Youth & Govt) and are overall happy with the facility. We always seem to see at least one friendly face from the community when we are there.

TOOMANYKIDS. I know that the free swim is supposed to be all ages, but there’s still two designated lap lanes roped off for serious swimmers — why, then, do I have to dodge the little kids who cross under the ropes when I’m trying to swim laps? I’ve even been kicked in the face by one of them! The lifeguards look on with minor concern, but don’t correct the kids or tell them to stay in the free swim zone, and the parents don’t do anything either! What the heck! PARENTS. UGH. Considering the high cost of membership for someone only interested in using the pool now and then, it sucks that sometimes I can’t even get a decent swim at this place.

If you are looking for a 24 hour fitness or a gold’s gym, then the Y might not be for you. Those type of facilities cater to those who want to just work out and nothing else. Yes, the Y is a gym, but it is also much more than that. It serves the family as a whole. I’ve been going to the Y since it opened. This is how we use the YMCA… In my busy schedule, the Y is opens early enough for me get to do my 5:15AM cross training routine on different days where I alternate with treadmill, weights, stationary bike, elliptical, and swim. On my days off when I have more time, the Y is close enough where I can to mountain trail runs and finish the workout with a swim(I shower first before I get in of course). They are part of the system where you can keep track of the exercises you do, which for an OCD like me, I think is great. My son did preschool at the Y. He loved it. He started his karate there at the age of 4 and now at age 7 he is a green belt in shotokan. My daughter is following in his footsteps except there are a lot more classes now where she is also doing tumbling and tumbling dance. Art/cooking/ballet/hip hop dance is available for this age group. If you are a classes person(which I am not), they have at least a dozen classes from your standard yoga/spin/aerobics to Tai-chi and Wall rubberbanding resistance. We love the pool. I started taking them both in the pool before they were 9 months. Both were floating/breathing on their own by the age of three. They both took/take lessons there and now my eldest is on the swim team where he can swim up to five times a week if we chose to, but he does it twice a week. Competition events are available though not mandatory. They have open swim nightly, on the weekend, and in the morning where I still take my kids to just play. Some people consider the cost of the YMCA high, but consider that its monthly fee would be less than the heating bill alone of a home pool. My previous gym experience was with 24 hour fitness sport for 7 years. I used their facilities in Long Beach, Hollywood, Woodland hills, Camarillo, and Thousand Oaks. Those served my needs more than adequately and before the Y was built, I was hoping they would build another 24 hour fitness in Newbury Park. Now that I have a family, I am so thankful that the Y was built. This isn’t a boutique gym and honestly, you get from the Y what you put in to it. I see that there are a lot of less than satisfied Unilocalers and I won’t begrudge their opinions. Yes, the Y provides the customer product as a gym membership, but it also provides a nurturing and health promoting environment for the family, which arguably shouldn’t be graded as a monetized product. Would you Unilocal your mom? Would you Unilocal your home? Objectively, you could, but why would you if they give you what you need.

Was going to this YMCA since it first opened. I have seen many changes that occurred including the major renovations and design changes that they implemented these past few years. I agree with most that it is great a YMCA was built in our community which made it very convenient and effective to have such an establishment. Though I believe many will agree there are serious design flaws from layout, configuration, and overall size. To quickly point some flaws are the indoor pool which I have heard many debates but the issue is the poor ventilation. You can see white films developing around the windows and the top of the ceilings. Is this normal? I’m no expert but it doesn’t seem sanitary to see things growing. The layout of the gym is way too small while depending on the time of day may be extremely packed or almost empty. There is a general rule if all of the same machines are occupied(i.e. treadmills) you are only allowed 30 minutes to work out before someone is able to kick you off to use the machine. This isn’t always the case but when it does happen it’s very annoying and it seems to happen to me at least every other week. The worst part of this YMCA location is the staff. There are great people there who are super friendly while there are many bad seeds that are just horrible. Towards the past year it always felt that the staff had their favorites which they catered to while they seemed annoyed by our presence. I try to always be polite with ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ but that is never enough. I have truly become disappointed with how they manage their staff because those who do their job well don’t deserve to be punished. The same bad staff members have made it more difficult to go to this location based on my poor experiences and lack of respect. I am glad that Fitness 19 has opened up to give opportunity of an alternative gym which I am now leaving to. Be smart and don’t always trust the initial tour of the facilities. Many people have left this gym for a good reason.

Update: Bumpin’ it up a star. Love Milton, the 6:30pm Monday/Wednesday spin instructor! Also love that they have two 6:30pm spin classes during the week. «Cause not everyone can get there at 5:30 on a work day :) Also, my son says he can always get a machine(unlike the nearest Gold’s). Keep up the good work, Y. I might bump you up again

Update: It is now 5 years since this YMCA opened and it has become much busier during this past year. There is often a wait for some of the cardio equipment in the mornings, some of the equipment is out of use awaiting repair and the Fitlinxx kiosks are frequently out of order so you can’t log your results while you are there(though you can do this from the internet if you want to). My husband joined about 6 months ago so that we could swim in the evenings, but the pool has few lap lanes available during the evenings, due to the swim team using most of the pool. In order to get two lanes available you have to wait until 7.30 or even 8.30 pm(depending on which night) so as of this month we have cancelled our membership as it’s really not worth the monthly fees any more.

I joined because the facility is close to my house and I would rather support a nonprofit than a big conglomerate like Gold’s or 24 Hour Fitness. I mostly take the exercise classes(spinning, body sculpt, yoga, etc.) and I love the instructors. One of the perks is the child care– the employees are well trained and very kind. My daughter looks forward to going every day. My only complaint is that there is little consistency in the class schedule. I wish they offered the classes I like every day at the same time. All in all, I am happy with this YMCA, and I encourage everyone to join their local YMCA. Support your local nonprofit!

I can mirror everything that Kaaren D. above says… Men’s facilities are clean with the required spinny thing for the wet swimsuit. My daughter is on the swimteam there, and the instructors are very kinda and encouraging. The only downfall about the pool is for swim meets. There are no blocks(I believe its a YMCA thing) and VERY little seating. In fact they have all parents and observers outside until your child’s event is up. Other than that, a great local YMCA, rarely crowded and always an open lane in the pool.

The best thing about this facility is the indoor pool, and the fact they keep two lanes for lap swimming most of the time. The gym is small, but has state of the art machines that actually guide you through your workout. When you become a member you get a free session with a trainer to personalize your workout on the machines. But the changing room is tiny, and on the weekend may be full of little kids and moms(if you are female). Can’t speak to the men’s facilities. Prices are comparable to other gyms in the area.
