Great food and fast service and the people seem nice. I wish Highland Falls had a place like this. Im a fan! I will most definitely be back.

Pete’s Hot Dogs is somewhere you should stop and grab a dog at if you’re in Newburgh. The dogs are solid. Just don’t expect options, sides, or anyone that’s friendly to greet you. Unless you know the staff you’re litterally getting a boiled boars head dog, a soda and some Lay’s potato chips. Smiles are not offered on the very limited menu. That said. …I still go there. I love dogs, and my favorite choice there is the chili dog with cheese. The chili has a little kick and in my opinion is the best topping they offer. The Texas sauce is below average and worth skipping. This place is a Newburgh institition and is probably the best example of Newburgh itself… A place that could be the jewel of the Hudson Valley but instead will suffer from failing to embrace change…

Road dawgs. Why is it that we eat so many hot dogs when we’re on a road trip? I’m not asking about, «We,» as in, «a people,» in the midst of some kinda cultural phenomenon. I mean literally, why do my husband and I end up trying all the hot dogs of the land, while we’re on the road? What is happening? Why are we doing this? So many. There have been a lotta hot dogs in our lives, people. Kinda gives me a panic. Well, this lil trip to Pete’s came about as we were driving upstate and I happened to take a look to see if I had any places bookmarked in the area, and hey look, Pete’s Hot Dog Stand appears. No memory of how ever I heard about this stand, or why I saved it to my obsessively collected list of thousands of restaurants everywhere. Never the less, guess who could easily find time on their trip for a little hot dog pit stop? These two, obviously. I hadn’t even checked the time, but turned out that we arrived at Pete’s tiny house of dogs only about 11 minutes before closing. Phew… Considering all the reviews noting how the people here are less than cheery, I have to say, we were served by two perfectly pleasant people. Seeing how it was the end of their day, and us just breezin’ on in so close to closing, I would’ve almost expected a little touch o’ the stink eye. Nope! In no time we were enjoying a trio of dogs with some pretty decent snap. We tried one with kraut, one with«hot bean sauce,» and one with, «NY red onions.» All three came with mustard. All three were pretty damn tasty in their soft steamed buns. While I’m always partial to the olé sauerkraut n mustard variety, the one with the smoothly pureed and slightly spicy, deep-red, «hot bean sauce,» was my top favorite favorite here. I’m not sure I’ve had one exactly like it before. Let’s be real, I’d not turn any of em down. Pete’s Hot Dog Stand is a minikin of a house, mostly comprised of a wee kitchen and counter. There are a few seats inside and some picnic tables out front. On the walls there’s an oil painting of a man who must be the original Pete, and Hot dog cartoons everywhere. I enjoyed these drawings depicting hot dogs in all seasons; hot dogs dressed up for the holidays, hot dogs enjoying a day at the beach, and on and on. Those hot dogs know how to have a good time, you see. Of course I’m pro-hot dog art all the way. I’m all for attributing human characteristics to foods and inanimate objects, and everything ridiculous and adorable. And that’s why how come I needed to buy me a Pete’s Hot Dog Stand tee shirt which portrays a lil hot dog fella pushing a hot dog cart. Aw ya cute, crazy, cannibal hot dog, ya… peddlin’ the remains of your brethern for the eatin’… Slap one of those tees on yo back for 15 bones. There’s a tip for the hot dog stand tee shirt collectors out there. Here’s a good ‘un. I’m not even one of these connoisseurs, but if I had ever thought to be, most certainly hot dog stand tee shirts would occupy a sizable chunk of my closet space at this point. I repeat: a lot of hot dogs, friends. Annnyyyywaaaayyyy… Another rando tip: Pete’s sells Snapple, and so I wanna let you know, Mango Madness and Pete’s Hot Dogs are a killa combo. Reeally scratches a particular Papaya Kingish kinda itch– the one that calls for sweet, fruity tropical juices with your salty dawg. Ah, enough rambling, the point is, I’d happily pull of the road for these fellas again. We can always go for a hot dog.

Like other reviewers before me I tend to compare this with other Hog Dog vendors I’ve been to in the past. This one is up there. I was once informed that they make their own dogs here although they are quite similar to Sabretts(very well could be one in the same.) The main drawback is the near unwelcoming reception of the staff. Not particularly friendly although that could be a result of having to dole out dogs all day without much of a break in clientele. Otherwise, decent lunch stop with price & quality in mind.

Pete’s has the BEST hot dogs! Small, quaint place to run in a grab a dog. Also another hidden gem about Pete’s is they have fountain cream soda on tap! Have never seen that anywhere else. Do yourself a favor and stop by Pete’s!

I have been going to this place since I was 13 years old… total of 41 years and has always been great… up until yesterday. My wife and I visited for lunch and the hot dogs were very good. However, there was a female with black hair who first sneezed into her hands, then rubbed the bottom of her nose and then handled food without washing her hands. We threw our food away and left… all these years and then witness that. There is also a sign which advises customers that they will not be served if they were using their cell phone which apparently does not apply to those who work at Pete’s.They were constantly texting while customers were waiting to be served. Such an icon for so, so many years and I sincerely hope this was just a one time problem

This is a great local hot dog place. It is not a «stand» like the title suggests, but an actual establishment with a few indoor and outdoor seats. Pete’s has been a local legend for several generations. The service is efficient and very fast — the hot dogs are made to your specs right in front of you. They are always delicious and cooked just right. Their chili sauce is the best. The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars and not 5 is because the staff here seem fairly cranky over the past few years. I’ve run into one or two ladies who have been pretty nice, but for the most part, they are not friendly here lately.

Simple toppings made well. Chili had no kick, but red onions were spicy and well done. Very fast, efficient service.

If your looking for a dog and kraut with mustard this is the place! I don’t personally like the sauce but that’s a personal choice. The dogs snap at you when you take that first bite. Its a great thing! Best dogs in the area bar none.

The last time I was here was in 2007, and based on what my mom [a Newburgh native] has said, nothing has changed or will change. It’ll be just as good now as it was when I was 24. I’m going back with family in a month and lemme tell ya, I can’t wait for my two hot dogs overloaded with melted cheese. I’ve had my share of hot dogs, but these do it for me like none other. In the words of one of my Hudson Valley [non-family] friends: «I love how a Bay Area girl who used to live in Alaska loves Pete’s!»

I’ve been there a couple times and left satisfied, but that’s not difficult when you’re a place where you can get a couple hot dogs and a can of soda for a few bucks. Once I got a chili dog and the topping definitely added a kick to the hot dog, and another time I got a simple hot dog with ketchup.(It’s tough to mess that up, and they didn’t.) The people are friendly and it’s a place where families and local blue-collar workers come in for a quick bite.(I saw both come in one time when I ate there.) If you don’t like hot dogs then there’s no reason for you to go there since they don’t serve anything else, and it’s probably too boring to linger there for a while, but if you want a quick meal for a few bucks it’s a great place.

I finally made my way to the infamous Pete’s Hot Dogs! First I have to say seriously how can anyone mess up boiling a hot dog? That’s like not being able to boil an egg. The secret to Pete’s Hot dogs is Sabrett! Plain & simple they use the best hot dogs known to man, Sabrett. My dogs were kind of cold so I’ll ding them for one star but overall they sell the most amazing hot dogs on the planet but let’s be honest they are Sabrett re-sellers; Haha! Seating inside is minimal at best and with the long line that shows up you don’t want to bother sitting in to eat unless you want someone’s butt in your face. Just imagine the dude on the line passes some silent but deadly gas, it’ll be a wrap for sure! That’s how terrible seating is but they do have one table outside if it’s not already taken.

I’ve gotten lunch here a few times over the years passing through Newburgh. I knew it was a good spot before I even went in and tasted the food because there were 318-wheelers parked on the block with their drivers inside the establishment. If anyone knows a good place to stop for a good bite to eat it would be a trucker… The prices are reasonable and the staff is very friendly. Their chili dogs are perfect and homemade. It doesn’t taste like canned chili like other local hot-dog spots.

Ironically I live in the county yet I’m never here for lunch but FINALLY, in the area around lunch time. Time to try the local«institution»? Theres street parking and a very small eating area inside. There was Boars Head signage inside so assume that’s the brand used. I ordered 2 with onions mustard and chili. Paid $ 4.70 The dogs had a snap, natural casing, though mild, lots of finely chopped onions and a thin chili sauce which was hard to find cause there wasn’t much under a heap of onions. Overall the people were friendly however, I’m not a big fan of natural casing and I wasn’t wowed by the averageness of the toppings or the dog itself. Forgetful. No nostalgia and no institution for me. Good, not great. Just my opinion.

I love reading reviews of places that have to critique something that has worked and been a neighborhood staple forever. Kinda makes me want to go to their house and suggest that their grandma’s beloved chocolate chip cookie recipe sucks and could be better. Get over yourselves. I’ve been coming to this place since I was small. My grandparents took my mom and aunts here. I don’t know too many people who grew up or lived in Newburgh and haven’t been here at least a couple times in their lives. I’ve moved around the country a few times and I come back to visit family and friends when I can. Even most recently, when home on leave from Europe, I made it a point in my visit to stop here. I always get two dogs when moving, four dogs if sitting, always with chili, cheese and mustard with some red pepper shaken on. I get Pepsi when it’s hot outside, chocolate milk when it’s not. If I’m feeling like a complete meal, maybe I get a cookie. They do hotdogs, people. Hotdogs. They aren’t a TGIMcwhatever. They don’t pride themselves on shakes or sundaes. They aren’t reinventing what a hotdog really is. From the days of five cent weiners to current times, they’ve been a success in a neighborhood that most people are mistakenly afraid to drive around. They put out a product that’s been consistent and quality. Enjoy the fact that something privately owned does so well for so long. I’ll always support this place.

Since I was in Newburgh, I had to try the legendary Uncle Pete’s. Ordered two #3s with mustard and onions. The chili had a bit of heat, was thin, but also had a bit of a cinnamon undertone. Dog was good but would have been better if they were split and grilled. Soft drink choices were standard pepsi, with the addition of white cream. LItle room to eat, so I took them to go. Good dog, could be better.

Newburgh institution? yes Good hot dog? yes Interesting setup? yes Cash only? heck yes Best hot dog in the world? meh… that’s up for debate Am I being fair for –1 star since I’m biased? yes UPDATE: Have I dined here twice in 24 hours? yes! After just landing in Newburgh for the first time, I called up my good friend Unilocal and asked for a quick place for lunch. This is a pretty small town but I was surprised that one place had over 15 reviews! Jumped in the rental car and drove straight here to see what the hype is all about. I’m from Buffalo, NY and we have Sahlens hot dogs that are charbroiled over real hardwood coal. However, the flavors are completely different! All of the reviews about this place being fast is true but I’m not surprised that they can pump out that kind of volume! No toasting of the bun and they just drag the wet dog out of the water and plop on the fix’ins. Definitely a locals place that the staff knows almost on a first name basis and it’s tucked away in a neighborhood a couple of blocks off of the main drag. Dont expect the staff to help you too much when placing your order. Just blindly pick something and you should be fine. Homemade chocolate chip cookie was delicious. There’s a Wed & Saturday special(2 hot dogs + 1 drink = $ 4.95) that I might have to come back to before jumping on a plane to go home.
