White Castle… you love it… or you hate it… and… I am the former…

I’m not sure what people expect when they go to White Castle, so I can’t understand the low reviews. I grew up with these burgers and have a serious addiction to them that immediately has to be satiated as soon as I come home to NJ. The service is quick, they rarely mess up an order, and the food is usually hot. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case with my fries :( I digress, White Castle is a regional favorite and not to be consumed with quality in mind. Come here with an open heart and, keep in mind, this is FASTFOOD.

***I have not been to a White Castle in a long time, but I do not remember them being this bad; the sliders were really greasy and thus kind of disgusting(I personally feel the quality and preparation here is noticeably worse the ones you can prepare yourself from your grocery store’s freezer aisle); the crinkle cut fries were not that hot, very limp and translucent from all the grease; this store is located in a rather rundown area of Newark and features two negatives that you might not experience at most other White Castle locations(the restaurant’s dining room reeked of cigarette smoke and panhandling occurs inside the restaurant); service was pleasant though I felt like it was hard to communicate with the employees through the thick and potentially needed security glass separating the cashiers/kitchen from guests in the dining area*** Like almost all standalone fast food restaurants, this White Castle has its own free parking lot and it is easy finding an open space.

Being from the west coast and never having experienced White Castle, I had to try it JUSTONCE. Harold and Kumar! SMH, you must be high to enjoy this food. We ordered the famous chicken rings, and the famous sliders. The sliders reminded me of McDonald’s cheeseburgers. They were exactly the same, just smaller and on softer bread. The chicken rings tasted like the chicken nuggets you by in the grocery store that are shaped like dinosaurs. No bueno. They also offer unique menu items such as fried clams and fried shrimp. I wasn’t brave enough to order them, but I was tempted. If I had more time to mull it over, I probably would have tried the clams, but I’m glad I didn’t. I ate two sliders and a few chicken rings, and basically could not ingest any more after that. The sliders were not as small as I thought they would be. Three or four would be a very filling meal, I can’t believe people eat ten of these in a sitting. My bf made the mistake of eating the rest of the sliders(we ordered ten, thinking they would be really really small), and he paid for it in the morning. I know that he’s eaten one of those abominable doughnut burgers and liked it, so for him to say White Castle was gross is saying something.

This is definitely my least favorite White Castle. It’s always very busy and very crowded. Also it’s not in the best neighborhood. It’s especially crowded during the late nights on the weekends. The employees can be very rude so brace yourself!

I happen to be passing by and I had this craving for White Castle burgers. You see I grew up on them. Having a White Castle down the street from my old house. It’s been many, many years since I had(aka nickname a rat burger.) I say this with lots of love. My favorite is the original burger no cheese on them, onion rings and an orange soda. For some strange reason I still can’t eat a lot of these things. From my 1st bite it brought back so many fond memories. White Castle burgers are very tasty. You see they are steamed with onions, and the buns are on top of the burgers. These burgers are slider size, but pack a big punch especially if you down a lot of them. They are also know for making good fresh coffee. Now I see they sell keurig k-cups. The staff is very friendly. I ate there and found the place to be very clean and neat. If u choose to eat in there is a free parking lot. WC has a drive thru window which is open late. Some WC’s are open 24 hours. The menu has changed over the years with many new and interesting items added like a srirache chicken sandwich and Waffle chicken sandwich w/bacon, and a breakfast menu. It was great sampling the burgers from my childhood.(I also have a recipe for stuffing made from these burgers… It’s very unique.) I would definitely recommend trying this place at least once.

C’mon now, it’s White Castle. It’s small cheap sliders, crinkle cut fries, and soda. You can only go wrong if you’re expectations are inappropriately set like some douchebag that has no clue what you’re getting into. Considering I was hungover from a wedding from the night before, driving down the NJ Turnpike back to DC, this was the cure, and it powered what would be 6 more hours of driving hell. I’d call that a win folks.

OK, so what if it’s still a novelty when I pass through the NJ-NY area and I want to stop at White Castle because of Harold and Kumar. The fact is their burgers are still tasty little treats that are different than your average fare at the other fast burger joints. This particular location is awesome because it come complete with BR(bullet resistant) glass between the servers and customers. To use the bathrooms, you have to be buzzed in! The whole place is a little dirtier than I’d like it but all in all, it’s not nasty. My wingman and I ordered a feast fit for a king in his castle(ok, sorry for the metaphor). We got a 10 pack sliders with cheese, 2 onion rings, 1 clam sack, 1 fish nibblers, 1 shrimp nibblers, and cokes — all for $ 32. We finished everything except for 1 order of onion rings… yes either because it was so tasty or because we are piglets. Enjoyed our lunch time visit, thanks and will come again!

Not the best White Castle in the area. The food preparation is sub par. Half of the time I have been here the burgers taste like the freezer and I don’t like the attitude of the workers. The one on Lyons Ave is better.

Yeuuuum. The frozen stuff in CA does not cut it. Came to NJ for a family wedding. Eveytime I am here, I try to make it a point to eat White Castle. My uncle asked if we, the family, wanted White Castle. Why should he ask anyways? He knows what the answer is always. He asked how many? I said… umm.200. And 200 burgers we got, arrived piping hot at 7AM to the house via my uncle. So spoiled we are. I can only eat 4, but my other family members are pigs. This is a must! Happy eating! =)

Inspired to try this place after watching the first«Harold and Kumar goes to White Castle» many years ago I had such HIGH expectation, but was disappointed miserably. Upon arrival, I noticed the building exterior looked like a restaurant that belongs in a ghetto. After going inside seeing the bullet proof order window(like at a bank), I was in the ghetto. We ordered a 20 burger combo which included fries and chicken tenders. Also I added 3 additional jalapeño burgers. I would applaud the employee for his swiftness in applying sauce and packaging each burger individually, but aside from that it was a HUGEUPSET! It was good, but not great. The grilled onion and sauce on that tiny burger was good, but the buns tasted like they were fresh out of the microwave. I think I will give it another try at another location.

Admittedly, I only came to try White Castle because of Harold and Kumar, and my idea of White Castle may have been skewed by the movie… but this is probably the most disgusting thing I have ever ingested. I got a bacon cheeseburger slider and a jalepeno slider, couldn’t tell which was which, both were blobs of sloppy mess with mushy bread, grey meat, and melted plastic for cheese… maybe it was just this location? I don’t know, can’t imagine anyone wanting to eat this mess. In-n-Out for the win forever!

Lol @ the attitude the employees have when they take your order. I heard that you have to try White Castle if you have a chance in the east coast, because it’s like having In n Out in the west coast. So I did try it and was actually pretty impressed. I thought it was cool that they gave small burgers instead of just one big one. I would definitely give it a shot to try the food because I thought it was something, the only con I had with this place was just the employees attitude.

This White Castle never closes. Due this White Castle’s admittedly-shady location and lack of seating(they only have counter seating, and little of it), I suggest daytime visits. Unless you’re a vegetarian, there’s no reason you shouldn’t come here. You’re here for their sliders, and all their self-contained goodness. For the first time, I tried one of the slider variants — the cheeseburger slider — which unfortunately wasn’t very good, as the cheese overpowers the meat. Also for the first time, I had their onion rings, which weren’t bad at all. Like a Thai hooker, White Castle is cheap yet alluring depending on what you’re on. At Newark on a layover? Take a cab to this White Castle, and use that drive-thru!

I have been to 5 white castles in my day. 2 or 3, including this one, have been sub-par. after looking around, this one wasn’t too far off my route and seemed to be reviewed higher than other locations. this white castle is not in a good part of NJ whatsoever, just a heads up. the dudes that worked there were cool. nothing stood out, but the fries were not overdone, didnt taste like they’d been sitting there, were certainly not oversalted, or too greasy. they were perfect, especially for loading up with ketchup. and i couldn’t feel a stomach ache coming with every bite. the burgers, however, from here i cannot say the same. i came at about 4am on my way to Maryland from Boston, which is usually when i arrive at most of the white castles i’ve gone to. the first and best white castle i had, i thought, was in linden. however last year i went to linden to find this location and ended up at a different one, and searched and could not find another white castle in linden… so apparently i am going to have to do some research. this is the one location that was not only the best but i also didnt get a stomach ache from. i would recommend the linden location over this one, however i still cannot seem to find that one location that i first went to which was far better than all of the others.

Okay, first of all, If you’re not a White Castle type of person, it’s not gonna matter what I say. Secondly, if you ARE a White Castle type of person, you should listen closely. This White Castle location serves the best food of any location, PERIOD. I have no idea why this is, but I’ve just resigned myself to living with this fact. I took off a star because you get served MUCH attitude by the employees if you stand there hemming and hawing over the menu, but I understand their pain. It’s White Castle, for cryin’ out loud. Side note: their recent decision to start calling the burgers sliders/slyders, is womp womp. For a fatty good time, I’d recommend the double cheese burgers, and chocolate shake. *burp*

Mmmm… Delicious white castle sliders… But in a bullet proof glass neighborhood. Better stick to the drive-up window.

For over 85 years, there has been a White Castle at this very corner, but the present building is only about 3 years old. So it’s very new and shiny and bright and clean looking, which is nice. I dont really know my way around Newark very well, but yet I know precisely how to get off of Interstate-78 and find this 307 Elizabeth Avenue location. That says something about me, and I’m pretty sure it’s not positive in a healthy way given the fact that I typically put down six of these 140 calorie, 7 grams of fat burgers. For those scoring at home, that’s an artery clogging, 840 calorie, 42 grams of fat cardiovascular nightmare of a meal. For those still not deterred, it’s only about 2 minutes off the interstate.
