Giving it 4 stars on their tomato soup alone! It was very flavorful and refreshing with its fresh cut veggies, tomatoes, and onions! Yum! My boyfriend and I really enjoyed it. As far as the grilled cheeses we both ordered the Mac n cheese grilled cheese. That was yummy as well very cheesy and flavorful. The grilled cheese comes with chips and a little pickle. The tomato soup comes with little toasted breads. The food was very hearty and it filled us up quickly. We shared a soup and still had enough to take home! I had a great experience here. The only negative would be how expensive the food was. It all came out to about $ 21! But well worth it. I will be returning especially for their yummy soup! Recommend.

Pretty surprised how underwhelmed I was with the Melt Down. There wasn’t really a lot of options, but I could get past that. I settled on a Baja grilled cheese, the tomato soup, and a soda. Where do I even start… They were out of a few soda options. I went to look for a table, all of them were dirty. Oh, and the floors were filthy as well. So when we got our food we asked if they validate parking. The kid bringing our plates said they do. Later on another dude told us they didn’t. So we’re eating the grilled cheeses, both bajas, and there’s no chicken on either… I could understand if one didn’t but both. Know your menu! There are only 10 or so items, can’t be that hard. There could have been more avocado. Half of my sandwich barely had any. Making matters worse, the tough part of the tomato, the part that connects to the vine, was also in my sandwich. Yum. I didn’t notice it until I actually got on Unilocal but my soup didn’t have the white sauce on top. So if you want a really terrible experience totally stop by the Melt Down.

I guess I’ll have to try it again. I was really satisfied after getting the Baja sandwich and Berry Goat salad combo, as both were delicious. However, they gave me both of my Baja sandwiches without avocado… something I did not specify. All the advertisements show a ton of avocado. I was really in the mood for it! Maybe next time.

I was in the area visiting University of Delaware for a couple days and made my way out to Main Street for a bite to eat. As someone who loves a good grilled cheese, as soon as I saw Melt Down, I was sold! Menu-wise, they offer variations on grilled cheese sandwiches, salads and a couple soup options. I liked that they had a «mix and match» option which gave you the option for half a sandwich plus either a small salad or soup and that this option wasn’t more pricey than just getting a sandwich. I chose to do the mix and match option with the BCT sandwich and the Santa Fe salad. Both were good. I would have liked to see some more«complex» sandwich options. Basically all the sandwiches followed a one cheese+one meat+one veggie on default white bread format. I think they had some opportunity to create cheese combinations and use more exotic bread to keep things more interesting. They did have a couple other bread options, but at an additional charge. The sandwich felt similar to something I could make at home. The salad was good. I really liked that you could still order any salad type you wanted for the side salad– not just a generic garden salad. The Santa Fe was good. I am pretty picky on the quality of chicken that I eat, so I can’t say I was a huge fan of the chicken but the overall flavor and mix of toppings was nice. A couple other things of note: They have a Grilled Ice Cream Sandwich as a dessert option. I didn’t try it, but it sounded interesting! Also, there soda fountain featured all local sodas, which I thought was neat! The restaurant was pretty slow when I visited. It was during the summer, so school was not in session which may have effected how busy they were, as they are located in a college town, but other restaurants appeared busier.

Grilled Mac n Cheese = macaroni and cheese in a grilled cheese… it was wonderful. To top it off, everyone working there is extremely friendly!

Excellent grilled cheese sandwiches. They are quite large and aren’t served on standard sized bread. Try the Maryland crab sandwich, it’s delicious. The restaurant is clean and has a nice atmosphere. It’s a great place for lunch.

I came here with my mom tonight for dinner. I purchased an $ 22 for $ 11 voucher from Amazon Local(I think there’s a Groupon right now, too), which we used. Since we had to use the whole thing in one transaction, we ordered the following: Grilled mac and cheese /roasted tomato soup combo(me), MD crab grilled cheese(mom), two fountain sodas, and the grilled ice cream sandwich for dessert. I was torn between the grilled mac and cheese and the Maryland crab grilled cheese, but since my mom ordered the crab, I decided on the mac and cheese, so that I could sample both sandwiches. I’m glad that I made this choice, since I really enjoyed the grilled mac and cheese! I’m a mac and cheese connoisseur, and I disagree with the reviewer below who was unimpressed with its quality. While it may not quite meet the quality I’d expect as a stand-alone side(score: 7.0÷10), it’s definitely better than cafeteria mac and cheese, and I very much enjoyed its taste on the sandwich. It had plenty of sharp cheddar bite and tender noodles, which complemented the crispness of the toasted bread well. I ordered the soup and sandwich combo thinking that I could dip the grilled cheese in the soup, but after trying this once, I quickly abandoned this plan because the flavor of the roasted tomato soup overpowered the mac and cheese, and I ate the soup by itself. With regard to the soup, it was thick and had a good texture, but it had a bitter bite that I didn’t particularly enjoy. On the way home, it occurred to me that this bitterness was most likely due to the use of water in the soup, so this problem could be solved by using milk either instead of or in combination with the water. The soup came with a couple of toasty bread crisps that I enjoyed dipping in it in lieu of the sandwich. Also, the combo came with some potato chips that were crisper and a bit thicker than standard chips(e.g., Lay’s). In addition to my combo, I tried a bite of my mom’s MD crab grilled cheese. It was very creamy and gooey, but I preferred the sharper flavor of the cheddar on the grilled mac and cheese sandwich to the subtler flavor of the monterey jack and crab, so I was glad of my choice. For my fountain drink, I tried the PA red birch beer, which I enjoyed with my sandwich and soup, and the orange mango, which was okay, but which I didn’t like as much with my food.(I would have liked to have tried the watermelon cream soda instead, but it was out of order, along with the diet cane cola.) My mom had the regular cane cola. Finally, the grilled ice cream sandwich, which I shared with my mom, was interesting and enjoyable, consisting of two scoops of ice cream drizzled with raspberry syrup sandwiched between two slices of pound cake. We ordered ours with one scoop of vanilla and one scoop of chocolate ice cream, but I preferred the vanilla with the raspberry syrup(although our server mentioned that the syrup could be left off, which I think my mom would have preferred…). While it’s worth trying once, to be honest, I don’t know if I’d order it again – on a summer day like today, I think I’d prefer a milkshake instead. Our server, Rachel, provided great service, and was very friendly, patient, and willing to explain the offerings, which we appreciated since this was our first visit. Without my even having to ask, she offered to make our ice cream sandwich after we had finished eating our grilled cheese sandwiches, so that the ice cream wouldn’t melt. This place is located right in the middle of Main Street(great for people watching, esp. with Klondike Kate’s across the street!), and is probably quite popular with the UD students during the academic year. Tonight, however, we were the only customers for most of the time we were there. If you drive, there are a couple of parking spots in the lot right next to the restaurant reserved for customers, but be sure not to park in the lot behind Iron Hill Brewery – there’s a sign in the restaurant warning that the owners of that lot are aggressive about towing. Although our total check came to around $ 25(the voucher was worth $ 22), most meals here shouldn’t cost more than $ 10/person, and I didn’t feel that the sandwiches were overly expensive(most places I’ve been, sandwiches run around $ 7.50 apiece). Overall, this is a great place to have a nice, comforting lunch on a dreary or cold day if you’re a student or work in Newark. I’m glad we gave it a try, and based on my experience, I’d definitely be willing to come back next time I’m in town.

(Please note that I visited this past winter… I’m just behind on my Unilocal reviews) This place was extremely unimpressive. Don’t get me wrong. I love grilled cheese. There are lots and lots of ways to do it well, and only a few ways to do it poorly. This place appears to have mastered the latter. I ordered a grilled ham and cheese. The ham was the square, tough, watery kind you see for $ 2.99/lb at the grocery store. The cheese was super processed and fakey. The bread was perfectly grilled, but for some reason, embedded with whole rosemary leaves, which were overpowering and obviously had an awful texture. The whole sandwich was nuclear-hot(which is fine), but everything just pulled out of the sandwich when you ate it. Eesh. This was honestly probably the lowest quality cheese sandwich I’ve ever eaten. You HAVE to use better ingredients if all you’re providing is cheese sandwiches!

Have no idea how someone couldn’t love this place. The man who was working at the time that I assume is the owner could not have been any friendlier and welcoming. Especially considering I was coming in late on a saturday. I got the philly cheesesteak sandwich which was tasty, filling and not messy. I would highly recommend this spot to UDel students

I love grilled cheese but this place was a disappointment. Nearly $ 30 for two people to grab some mediocre sandwiches, some ok soup and drinks? I’m all about paying more for quality but you could make better grilled cheese at home and for a lot less.

Hey Leah K. Just got to say I loved me the experience at the restaurant. Got grilled cheese. Only thing I would say is maybe have a $ 20 deal where you get a grilled cheese, chips and a pickle, a milkshake, a salad, and a soup.

I’m really surprised by the reviews of this place. It is a place in college town that serves grilled cheese the size of your head. Are you expecting an upscale 4-star masterpiece? It is cheese and bread! To each their own I guess. I went here based off a recommendation from my sister who attends U of D. The first time I went I got the Maryland crab grilled cheese and split a cup of soup with my husband for dipping. The service was awesome. The man behind the register was really friendly and welcoming. The grilled cheese master working with him was very friendly too. Our food was too hot to eat the second we got it(shocked people said theirs was cold) so we sipped on the delicious locally produced sodas. The orange mango was awesome. We stopped in again on New Years Day. My husband loved the Maryland crab so much he got it again. I tried the Philly Cheesesteak and loved it. I couldn’t finish it so the hubs was pleased to finish it for me. I agree it has less steak than the picture but the sandwich was still huge. Overall, it was a great experience between the friendly service, the huge sandwich, and the hot soup.

A quest for soup initially brought me to the Melt Down Grilled Cheese on New Years Day. The TV coverage for the Mummers mentioned Soup Day and my friend recommended Melt Down as a place in Newark that has soup. Grilled cheese the day after NYE is just brilliant. Aside from getting my soup fix, carbs and cheese after a heavy night of drinking might just be perfect. I went with the half soup, half sandwich combo and had roasted tomato soup with the Grilled Mac n Cheese sandwich. This also came with chips and a pickle. My husband with the Cheesy Caprese. So this place is awesome in theory. However, my sandwich was not warm enough and could have used a little extra meltiness. The mac and cheese in the sandwich was just mediocre. A slightly better mac and cheese could have made all the difference. Perhaps one additional type of cheese in the sandwich could have helped as well. The soup was tasty, but also could have been warmer. The combo also came with two little pieces of toast perfect for dunking into the soup. As a fan of grilled cheese I’d definitely be willing to give this place another shot. Or just attempt to make these sandwiches on my own.

Overpriced cheese sandwiches. I got the combo of ½ sand which(mac and cheese) and ½ soup(corn chowder) with a black and white milkshake. A lot of dairy, I know. Its not that the food was bad, but I wasn’t impressed. With all the grilled cheese restaurants popping up all over the place, this doesn’t stand out as worthy of a second visit. My boyfriend(Eric A) had his own issues with our experience which he wrote in his own review. Save your money or go to the grocery story and make your own.

I saw this place the last time I was in Newark with my girlfriend and we were excited to try it. I am a huge fan of grilled cheese. The menu seemed a little small, and a lack of a classic grilled cheese hurts them. I tried the philly cheese steak sandwich and my girlfriend had the mac and cheese sandwich with soup. My sandwich was tasty but it lacked steak. The picture on the menu and what I was served looked totally different. It wasn’t that busy, the employees were just standing around playing with their phones right by the register instead of cleaning dirty tables. The prices seemed a little high as well. The reason I wouldn’t go back was for sanitary reasons. One employee threw their gum out with their hands and didn’t wash afterwards. They went back to playing with their phone putting his fingers in their mouth.

I love grilled cheeses and Melt Down makes a good one. We had the ham and cheese and the turkey club and enjoyed both. Service was prompt and friendly. I’d love to see a new sandwich with brie and apple!

As a fan of cheeses in general, the tastes this place created was great. I loved the unique combos and, while I didn’t try the salad, I liked that it was up there as an option. The best, by far, was the chocolate milkshake and the local soda flavors. At first I thought the prices were a little outrageous, but then I saw the size of the sandwich and all was forgiven. Plus it came with chips and a pickle spear. My only issue with this particular night was the staff. It was two young girls who had no sense of customer service. They didn’t greet us with a smile or an appropriate greeting when we walked in, slouched when taking our order, talked too loudly about their personal lives, and when I asked what was good on the menu because it was out first time, loudly rolled their eyes and said, «I don’t know.» I’ll go back for the food and hope for a more mature and in tune staff.

My daughter and I visited Melt Down after a long weekend in Newark for ice skating. It was great! The food, the staff, the ambience — they nailed it. We both had the Mac and cheese grilled cheese sandwich and it was everything we hoped for and more. Gooey, delicious, and just the right amount of toasty. Also, the New Hope soda bar was refreshing and delicious! My daughter declared this to be her new favorite restaurant! I highly recommend!

What comes to mind when you think of an all-American grilled cheese? The buttery toasted bread? Or maybe the American cheese oozing out of the two slices? Whatever expectations that pop in to your head, this place definitely won’t meet them. I came in here last week because I was curious; new place on the busy Main St. that I haven’t eaten at so I figured I’d give it a shot. I was greeted by a chipper employee that seemed to be having a good day(I’m assuming here, didn’t ask) and really made me feel welcomed. I told her it was my first time there and she helped out and recommended a few things on the menu. I’m sorry to say that they only have like 7 – 8 different variations of grilled cheese sandwiches but I’m guessing if you make something really well you don’t need many options? Maybe. Anyway, I ended up getting the Maryland crab grilled cheese because the«classic» grilled cheese was made with sharp cheddar and I’m not the biggest cheddar fan. The sandwich itself was good, it was toasty and it was filled with what looked like crab salad and monterrey cheese that got lost so I never even tasted it. I went in a second time and the hospitality was great once again. My dad sent me to get him a smoked turkey club and I got a few bites from it. The cheese was disgusting! I was like it had a very greasy taste to it, weird to explain but wasn’t good at all. My dad thought it was ok but the bread was kind of burnt. I’m not sure I would recommend this place because it doesn’t really offer classic grilled cheeses with american cheese not even being an option on the menu. I’ve gave them 3 stars because the hospitality is great but the sandwiches themselves aren’t that good, mediocre at best. And at 7.99 a pop, you’re not really getting your money’s worth. I’ve had way better from local delis and for cheaper so I’d say skip this place unless there’s nothing else on main st. that catches your attention.

When my coworker told me about this new place and the grilled mac and cheese sandwich(apparently a top seller), I was excited about trying something new. The menu is very limited w/7 grilled cheese options, 4 salads and 3 soups. Not a problem if you put out amazing food. For my first time I opted to try«the classic» or sharp cheddar on white toast. I really wanted to love it but it was very bland and I felt American cheese would have been so much more flavorful or maybe add a minced fresh herb spread to enhance the cheddar. On the other hand I thought the roasted tomato soup was wonderful and my grilled cheese was better served as a dipping device to combat some of the heat of the soup. It was mentioned on the menu that Parmesan crisps accompanied the soup but unfortunately they were absent from my order. If I was rating the staff they would get 5 stars. Since my order was a takeout the staff made it a point to ask when I would get there so the food would be hot and ready to go at my arrival. Despite the restaurant being very casual, I felt more like a guest and less like a customer. I wish more places subscribed to this level of service. I do have some suggestions, one of which being a «build your own grilled cheese» option with a variety of bread, cheese and toppings(jalapeño, tomato, meat, maybe an oil herb spread etc). Another would be to roll out a «grilled cheese of the month.» I was told there will be special limited offers once the restaurant is rolling so I look forward to that. Will I be back? I think so, after all I’m very curious about the crab and the caprese grilled cheese sandwiches and I think the potential is there w/a few tweaks.
