Best pupusas Ive had in NJ. Service isn’t the friendliest but the food is worth it

I get good service when I come here, but that’s because I’ve been going here for years and I tip well. The food is great. I always get the breaded chicken with rice and red beans. I can understand why people say the service sucks, but you just have to call the waitresses over.

Was brought here by group of friends. They ordered for me since I don’t speak spanish. The menu is in spanish. I had the papusas with beans, meat and cheese. Pretty good and great price. Interesting drinks as well, like some good tropical fruit juice. Served in a paper cup but good nonetheless. No idea what it was called.

Came in with a craving for Latin American food, the food here is not particularly traditional to El Salvador, but is good, and prepare for LOTS of it. Big portions. But very good for the money, just make sure to bring a friend along for sharing, because you might wish you had if you don’t! My shrimp with rice was tasty, but entirely too much of it. Also, employees don’t speak English very well if at all, prepare to use some Spanish. And if you ask for water, be sure to ask for a CUP of water, I almost got charged for bottled water because when I asked for«agua», the server automatically brought me bottled water. I guess you have to be very literal with these people and ask for a VASO de agua…

After reading all the reviews I was hesitant to give this place a try. Let me start from the time I walked in. The young person behind the counter saw me standing there to pick up my order, she turned her back and completely ignored me. After the older lady finished her conversation with a another customer she asked me if I needed anything. I finally got my order and found that the pupusas are not bad at all. They were better than other places and the Pupusas con loroco were actually filled to the max with loroco like they should be :) I asked for a take out menu to take pictures and share with fellow Unilocalers but they didn’t have one.

I’ll give this place one star because the Pupusas were DELICIOUS! Tacos were great too but the service is GARBAGE! and that’s me being nice about it. Both waitresses had a bad attitude and seemed like they hated their job. I was there for my sisters birthday and apart from taking our order and giving us the food our table was not visited ONCE. Not once did we get checked on or asked if we wanted refills. After asking for the bill we waited an additional 20 minutes to receive it. Mind you she practically threw the bill at us. If you want some great food definately visit this place but don’t expect any hint of good service.(Ps. I’ve been here about 3 times in the last 6 months and all 3 times the service was bad) 3 strikes and you’re out!

We go to las canastillas whenever we’re craving good salvadorean food BUT we have to remind ourselves that the service is not gonna be good! So with that attitude we go prepared to enjoy great authentic salvadorean food and it never fails. SERVICE is soooooo BAD!!!

Love the authentic el salvadorian food. Everything on the menu is amazing can’t go wrong. Service is good. Sometimes waitresses don’t speak English. On weekends they have two people there that speak English. But still had no problem ordering off menu by pointing. Great prices too!

Pretty good food at a nice price. It doesn’ t look as nice on the outside, but is relatively new. Almost everything is in Spanish so you know it’s legit ;) Our waitress had a little bit of a problem understanding english, otherwise it was pretty good. The chicken tamale was very delicious, only $ 2 and filling. I’ve never had tamales that good, the corn was very tasty. Just wish there was more chicken in it. The ceviche was pretty huge in terms of how much shrimp they put in it. They certainly did not skimp on the shrimp and is probably why it cost so much for a cold/somewhat soupy dish($ 7.50). It was nothing spectacular, but it was well cooked. The breaded fish was very average though. Horchata was interesting, had some savory flavor unlike the purely sweet ones I’ve tried. It had peanut buttery flavor as well as almond. The coffee wasn’t that good.

I ate at Las Canastillas at 326 Broad street Newark. Is there also a branch at 920 Broad street? Anyway I enjoyed it. I had the avacado salad and steak with peppers and onions both good. The décor is modern and bright, looks like a fast food joint with tacky numbers on the tables. But the food was good and dinner only set me back $ 13.
