Horace Shellhammer’s

The husband and I really enjoyed this place! We were looking for a good ol’ American craft beer bar in proximity to Christiana Mall, and this place fit the bill. We ordered crab toasts for our appetizer (deliciously cheesy), I ordered the veggie quesadilla and he ordered the catfish po’boy. The quesadilla was enormous and stuffed full of all kinds of delicious vegetables! I have enough for at least one or two extra meals left over. Husband really loved his catfish; it was fresh, hot, perfectly fried. We split a peanut butter bomb for dessert, which hit the spot but it wasn’t the highlight of the meal. If you order a coffee, though, they do serve them in enormous mugs, which made this caffeine addict thrilled.
Service was slow but very friendly and knowledgable. They get a lot of bonus points for being sweethearts to my one year old. Thanks, Shellhammers, for a tasty Saturday lunch!

RJ and I stopped here for brunch in August, and we were pleasantly surprised. He ordered a ham and cheese omelet and I ordered a grilled chicken salad. They both came with fresh fruit. My salad was excellent, and RJ enjoyed the cheese on the outside of his omelet instead of inside. The service was great, and the food was fresh and delicious.

Hubs and I decided to take Shellhammer’s for a test drive one date night after our first attempt at finding a restaurant led us to a hotel. We don’t do hotel restaurants.
We also try to avoid strip mall restaurants whenever possible, but I was pleasantly surprised. Shellhammer’s is smack dab between a dress shop and an appliance store, but once you walk in the door you forget entirely that you are in a strip mall. I thought the décor was spot on for that crafty beer bar and a grill kind of feel. We waited a good 5 – 10 minutes for the hostess to appear, but she then seated us immediately. We were sat awkwardly close to another pair of diners but I think that’s just what happens when restaurants have tables dedicated for two. No complaints but I was grateful when the two paid their check and left.
We started off with the crab toast. I thought they were flavorful, crabby enough and toasted to perfection. I ordered the short rib burger, and my husband got the raw hide burger. Both were slightly above average in quality and taste. Once complaint I had was that my burger was supposed to have American cheese, and strangely there were several bites that seemed like it had what I call «old socks cheese» — aged cheese that you spend alot of money on but smell like someones old gym clothes. Otherwise known as mold or fermentation. So something wasn’t quite right about the burger, but it wasn’t the whole burger and it didn’t make me sick or anything. Aside from 3 or 4 strange bites, the burger was good and my husband really enjoyed his.
Service was fine enough to give a standard 18% tip — nothing to crow about, nothing to complain about. Overall a solid 3.5 star experience, but I’m rounding down because the experience didn’t leave me yearning to repeat it.

Great service and food. I work nearby so some coworkers and I go occasionally for lunch or for happy hour. Decent craft beer selection and prices. Good for groups. If it’s busy then the kitchen slows down noticeably (get there before or after the lunch/​dinner rush if you want your order to come out quickly).
Better ambiance than most restaurants that try to be pubs. You wouldn’t expect a place like this in a strip mall, but once you’re inside it feels authentic.

Stopped in for lunch and hoping for a quick bite. Did not see a menu for quite a while and was served after two other parties that arrived after us. My wife order a burger without bacon and got bacon. My sons’ Ceaser salad was drowned in dreasing. My burger was just OK. Rather dry in my opinion. I would say the place was an overall «ok» but there is really no reason to go back. Wendy’s, nearby, would have been equally satisfying and would have been quicker.

Perfect place for fried Calamari, nachos and beer after work! Service is usually pretty good, depending on which bartender it is. Other than that it’s a great place to chill and unwind.

Great music and fun atmosphere. Great beer selection. However, both times I have been here they have not had the beers that they listed as having on tap. Food came out in a timely manner. The first time I came I had the French dip, which was very good. The second time I came I had the Backdraft roast beef, which was good but pretty spicy (and I like spicy). My boyfriend had the Brooklyn pastrami, which he enjoyed and I liked a lot. Our friend had The Lumberjack– which was quite good– but definitely seemed like it would be a «gut bomb». I took a bite and it was delicious.

When I lived in DE this was my favorite restaurant. I went back this week and it is still my place to go! Dinner and plenty of drinks for two totaled $ 50 and the food is amazing. Burger night on Wednesdays is the time to go! Jess should win the bartender of the year award if such exists.

We walked in and asked them to put the Steelers game on which they happily did for us. The nachos and burger was great. We sat at the bar. The bartender didn’t check on us. We would have bought more but she let me just sit there with an empty bottle. My boyfriend finally had to go to the other end of the bar and ask her for another round of drinks. Then I guess some regulars came in and she was all happy to help them. Made sure they were good with all they needed. I was disappointed in the service at the bar but the food was good.

Great service… nachos were great… crab soup Excellent… jambalaya taste good… the Strawberry Shortcake martini was sooooo delicious… our server Dillon was awesome… fast service… pricing was reasonable… would definitely recommend and visit again whenever I’m in the area!!!

Not a bad place to grab a bite or a drink. Not a ton of variety for vegetarians. Gets crowded on weekend nights as you would expect, so be prepared to stand until a table or spot at the bar is open.

This was my first time dining here and everything from the time I stepped in the door to me leaving gave me hints I should leave. There was no hostess at the door to seat me. RED FLAG!
So after standing for 5 minutes I walked over to the bar to make a to go order. I order the Greek Salmon Salad with (NOTE) the dressing on the side. While waiting for my order a customer saw something in his food that should not have been there and returned it to the kitchen. RED FLAG!
I waited incredibly long for a simple salad. About 30 minutes later out comes my $ 13 order. With my appetite ready, as I opened this sorry excuse for a salad the first thing I notices was that it was DRENCHED in dressing (not on the side). And the salmon was over seasoned and clearly frozen fish not fresh. I paid $ 13 for bagged salad topped with canned ingredients and a frozen piece of fish. There was no crisp in the lettuce! RED FLAG, RED FLAG, RED FLAG!
I’ve had better salads at Wendy’s. And that’s exactly what I did. I drove to Wendy’s and enjoyed there salad for half the price.
I don’t know if the chef took off that day. But it was horrible and a salad is not that difficult. If you can’t get that right, I most definitely won’t be back. Thanks… for nothing!

Based on Unilocal!Reviews we ordered take out to eat at our hotel. We were just passing through and staying nearby. We ordered Greek Salmon Salad and the Spinach Salad with Chicken. Salmon was overcooked but well seasoned. Both salads pretty small– but maybe because it was take out?
Wouldn’t say to avoid the place. Seemed nice inside and food was. Pretty good.

A friend found this place on Unilocal as a spot to meet on my drive back to DC from NJ. The location was incredibly convenient to hop in and off the highway. The place was relatively full and lively. We sat at a table at first but after no attention, moved to the bar. Service at the bar was great. We decided to split the quesadilla. They split it in the back which was really nice. It was tasty and the tortilla cooked perfectly– crunchy and not greasy. Each «half» was two large pieces. Each half portion could easily have been a meal.

Love this place but the last time I was here I was completely ignored while sitting at the bar. Placed an order for cod fries which were never delivered… but were included on my bill. Guys… I love this place but WTF?

Great selection of drinks and food. This is a place where I would come and get something different every time I come because everything is always great. The service is always very fast. I love their specials. They have everyday specials and different specials each day of the week. Half-​priced bottles of wine, half-​prices fajitas, drink specials, etc etc.
Pub atmosphere but nice enough to go with friends and family and have a good time.

The waitress was pretty.
Great beer selection. Prompt service. Food is above average quality but not as well prepared.
Way better than the surrounding chain alternatives. Probably a full 4 stars here in suburbia, but not in the real world.

We just stopped in for the first time tonight. We’re not from the area and heard we should try shellhammers. We came in and had a great time. What a cool place!
Our server Juliana was really great. My company sends reps to the area all the time and I will spread the word.

Pretty slow service. Not many people here and they are taking forever to take our order. Wow I have no idea how this place has four stars. I’ve never left a bar faster then leaving this place. The service was horrible and the waitress had an attitude. Never again will I go to this hole in the wall.
