WOW, what an awesome pastrami sandwich. HUGE! Definitely one of the Three Kings of Newark. The pastrami is cut thin and piled high on rye. Hot and fresh right out of the steamer. Just remember to get a bunch of napkins because you’ll be eating this in the car as there are no seats here, it’s a liquor store.

Great sandwiches the best in Newark great for two people to share. I will never eat there again. Crack heads making your food talking over the food and touching there body, ie nose, eye snot, and continuing to make sandwich. I can’t do it.

Omg what can I say about this place. I remember having my first Cooper’s sandwich as a child and it was so big lol. Now as an adult I go here whenever I want to enjoy a super great corn beef or corn beef and pastrami sandwich with coleslaw and Russian dressing on rye with a pickle. Cooper’s is a staple in Newark and you will not be disappointed in this large sandwich. Please know however this is not a sit down stop and depending on the time you go it can get quite crowded.

Neither location is in the greatest area and they don’t have a place to sit but they do have the best sandwich on this side of the hudson. You will find CEOs, Businessmen, Doctors, Lawyers, Construction Workers, or just the average local joe all standing in line waiting for pastrami sandwich… their corned beef is good as well. The pastrami is tasty and juicy and piled very high. I get a pastrami with lettuce, mayo, oil, vinegar and onions… nothing quite like it. If your in the area don’t be scared to get out your car and go inside… i promise you will be fine.

I remember this place as a little one. My grandfather never liked it and preferred another sandwich shop that is no longer open. Our friends and family swore by Cooper’s reubens but my grandfather was steadfast in his disdain. This weekend, while my family was here from down south we decided to grab a couple sandwiches. What can I tell you, grandpa was right. The meat is just way too fatty and bland. The other ingredients were fine, no complaint about the bread, dressing, etc. the meat is just«blah» It’s really sub-par and can’t touch any Jewish deli I’ve ever been to.

A brick city staple! Back in the day cooper’s could do no wrong in the eyes of anyone who ordered here. There’s NOTHING like a cooper’s sandwich. Pastrami on rye with coleslaw and russian dressing(and a pickle on the side). Omg! Mouth-watering just thinking about it. So good! I haven’t been in quite a while, so I’m not sure if it still holds true, but I plan to find out soon.

It’s not a sit in place… But if u want a banging corn beef or hot pastrami sandwich jump off the parkway at exit 144 and stop in to grab a bite! I hadn’t been here since I was a little girl but decided to stop in! They have not lost their touch! I ordered a ½ corn beef & ½ pastrami on rye with Russian dressing. They pile the meat so high, you only need half the sandwich. They also give you two slices of a pickle. The Deli is combined with a liquor store so you can get dinner and a drink all in one spot. The people are pleasant and the price is more than fair… The décor is the only thing that leaves you wanting more… Don’t expect anything fancy… It’s a classic mom and pop!

Every body knows that this is the best sandwich place hands down! Don’t let the appearance fool you. Their most famous in the is the Hot Pastrami. And they load up on the meat. It’s a project just to finish one of these. Hey, and if you are on a budget you can break down one sandwich into about 3. I love my Hot Pastrami sandwich on wheat bread/roll with Russian dressing and cole slaw. I only give this a 4 due to appearance.

A friend of mine posted on Facebook that she was in the mood for a «Cooper’s Sandwich» which lead to several comments of people singing the praise of this place. That day just happened to be my birthday, so I decided to take the trek to «Brick City» to get one for my self. The place itself is a small, rundown liquor store with bulletproof glass greeting you as you walk in. I’m not going to lie, it’s not really pleasant to the eye. Once you make your way to the back, you see a small deli area with the menu posted on the bullet proof glass. The woman behind the counter was pleasant as she took my order for a ½ hot pastrami/½ corn beef on rye w provolone cheese(they were out of Swiss), cole slaw and thousand island dressing. There is no where to sit in the place, so I had to eat it in my car. When I took the sandwich out of the bag and unwrapped the wax paper I was greeted by what may be the most beautiful sandwich I ever laid my eyes on. It was probably as big as my head thanks to the overly generous amount of meat. The cheese, dressing and cole slaw complimented the meat and rye bread to form what I must say was one of the greatest sandwiches I have ever sank my teeth in(I’m getting hungry and thinking of going back as I type this). They also give you a small slice of a pickle on the side, which was cool but I do wish they gave you 2 slices. I would have rated Cooper’s 5 stars if it was a place where you could sit and enjoy the sandwich. I give it a solid 4 because the sandwich itself was a work of art. I will definitely be back in the future!

The Orange STREET location is the one I usually go to( ). I don’t know which location came first, but I like them both equally. This one has more thick protective plexiglass and metal bars covering the counters, but the menu is the same and I’d say the food is pretty consistent, too. All I’ve had at this location is the pastrami and I enjoyed it just as much as the other spot! Managed two large meals outta that one sandwich.

This place might be in a shady area but the sandwiches are amazing! I personally like the beef brisket w/brown gravy & I have them put american cheese on it & my husband always gets the pastrami & swiss on rye. I actually thought I hated Pastrami until I had one of their sandwiches. The Pastrami is so tender, juicy & flavorful! There is no where to sit & you pretty much place your order to a guy behind a plexi glass wall but it’s worth it! Your sandwich comes wrapped in waxed paper with a pickle it looks like nothing special until you open the waxed paper and see the 3 inches of meat & have that first amazing bite! We usually call our order in on our way there & it’s ready when we get there in about 10 to 15 minutes. We order from there ever month & they have never messed up our order. They would get 5 stars if my husband would let me go there alone to get the food but the neighborhood is a little to iffy. If you like a pastami sandwich or any sandwich for that matter that is 3 inches thick, tender, flavorful & a really great prices this is the place for you!!! They are also a liquor store so if you want you can grab a beer to go with your sandwich.

Grew up in Newark and can still remember the first time my father took me to Cooper’s over 30 years ago… Man was I blown away from the taste, size and quality of my roast beef on rye… Every-time I come home ot visit I hit Cooper’s up like clockwork. Definitely one of the best deli’s I’ve ever eaten at.

This is the last thing I bought before leaving Newark. I bought a 3meat combination sandwich for my boyfriend which included pastrami, turkey and corn beef. He has never had a sandwich from here before and he loved it!

All that Warren B. said is true about the location but the food is not bad. Not as good as an NYC deli like Katz’s but not bad for New Jersey. In Newark I think Krug’s has better pastrami and a nice friendly service.

My family and I have eaten here since I was a wee lass, and the quality of the sandwiches they turn out is off the charts, just as it always has been. The star out of the lineup is the pastrami sandwich, piled crazily high on top of delicious rye, served with yummy pickle(or peppers!) on the side. The rest of their menu is great too, but if you’re ever in doubt, remember to default to the pastrami! I dare you to try and eat an entire sandwich by yourself in one sitting. I know there will probably be legions of people ready to go crazy over what I’m about to say, but that deli across the river… you know the one… Katz? Yeah. They can no way compare to the sandwiches served here at Coopers. Beware, the place is very small, I’m talking no more than 10 people in the joint small, not including those in the liquor/smokes line, so be prepared to stand outside sometimes on a busy Saturday. Also be aware that hey, this is ungentrified, inner city Newark, so if you’re faint of heart or have trouble exercising general common sense and awareness of your surroundings, you might wanna stay home. Otherwise, don’t be a wimp; come on down South Orange Avenue and get you some!

They pile the meat on here so high, you need a stepladder to eat it! Seriously. they don’t skimp on the meat. The pastrami sandich I got was excellent and the wife loved her corned beef sandwich. Pickles are served with the sandwiches. The price was around $ 9.50 each, and well worth it. The neighborhood is dicey, and I was getting flashbacks like I was watching The Wire. You cannot eat inside, so plan on eating your meal somwehere else. If you’re a meat lover, you will love Cooper’s!

Okay, here’s the deal: Yes, it is a liquor store, yes it looks like a cheesy store-front from the outside. But inside, they make the most delicious hot pastrami on rye sandwiches you would ever want to sink your teeth into this side of the Hudson! Piled so high, so tender, so so good. They also have hot corned beef as well as assorted sandwiches. Don’t be a prude. Where else can you get a(edible) sandwich and a cold brew in the same place, and be home in 5 minutes to enjoy it? Kudos to Coopers!
