I had been looking closely at King David’s BBQ for the last half a decade, before I decided to stop by this week. It’s a «travel trailer» right on the corner of State Highway 150 and 75 in New Waverly Texas, with outdoor seating and a great smell. It appears as if this trailer no longer travels and has found a perfect home. As usual, you can feel free to view my photos just uploaded to supplement this review. I parked and walked up with an appetite, as I had been looking forward to this for a long time. Manning the mobile(yet now stable) kitchen was none other than King David himself, also known as David Sallee Sr. I ordered a sliced beef sandwich and an iced tea with no sugar. Was greeted in a friendly manner, given my cup and shown where to get my tea out of the iced cooler. The smell here was so, so nice… In a short amount of time, my sandwich came out. So did King David. I had been greeted already by his one year old doggie, «Salomon«. This quite large man when presenting my food, asked for my opinion. That didn’t take long. I asked how long he had been here and he said about 4 – 5 years. I then took a giant bite into something that I only wish the world could see, and that everyone could try at least once… To begin with the meats he serves are cleaned of the excess fat, I saw that right away. They are smoked perfectly, and basically fall apart, melt in your mouth, etc., like the finest world class BBQ. The buns were local and fluffy fresh, as were the onions. The sauce was home made and remarkable. When explaining to David that once BBQ jumps up into this class, of the echelon or top of the line, there’s not much more you can do to top it, he told me that he has won more trophies than would fill the entire seating area there. I believe him. I told him how I had eaten at Bobby Flay’s restaurants, and ironically had watched an episode called BBQ with Bobby Flay from 2005, like at 3:30 the same morning, he knew who Bobby Flay was and said that he would love for Bobby Flay to try his BBQ. And to be honest, I’d like to see that as well. Before leaving, David was kind enough to offer me some samples of his other foods. The pork was like candy, the potato hearts with cheese were wicked delicious, and the chopped beef with his«other sauce» was like eating heaven itself. No idea why it took so long for me to stop by here. Well, maybe because it’s so close to being in between my two main homes in Texas, so I have always been full when coming by. But this time I made a special effort and I am so glad I did. I think this guy could beat Bobby Flay in a Throwdown. No kidding. I would bet good money on it. This –is– some of the finest BBQ in Texas.
