Pepe’s Place

If I could give this place a sixth star I would. The food is so good and the the staff is so warm and friendly. I order the NY bufflo shimp, that comes with fries and a little side of cole slaw and tartar sauce. The tartar sauce was so delicious. While waiting for my food, I was given samples to try, they where mac and cheese, sweet potatos and green and even a small piece of cheesecake. The food and staff are absolutely wonderful. I would definitely return and spread the word about Pepe Place.

came here a few times. The service here is excellent. The staff are really nice and make it a point to to give you the best possible service. Was happy to see that they have chicken/​lamb over rice. first time I got it I thought it was pretty good, 2^nd time it was pretty bad. Not sure what happened. The buffalo shrimp is every bit as good as people say it is. Will come back because I believe in supporting businesses that treat their customers with such great service.

Came across this place while in the area with a friend. It’s a very small place. A few stools to sit on. Since it was our first time there the girl at the counter brought us some sides to taste. Mac n cheese, mustard greens, and the yams. All were delicious. I ended up getting the buffalo shrimp with the fish. Awesome. Their homemade fruit punch is also a hit. My friend had the fried chicken which he enjoyed.
The owner Pepe came out to say hi and chat with us. Asked us how we knew of the place. We said Unilocal of course ;) Well worth the visit.

The mustard greens were perfect, and the Mac and cheese rocked. Hole in the wall with an owner with a great attitude and jazz playing in the background. Come Here!

These guys are awesome! I was in a total jam for my party, and they whipped up a half-​tray of their delicious vanilla-​bean yams in two hours. They even called later that night to see how they party went. They really care about their customers, and it shows in the quality of the food and service.

So, after reading the reviews, I said I must try it for myself. We ordered three orders of buffalo shrimp platters which came with chips and a side of «Ling Whiting fish» (delish) Fried to perfection!
The fries could’ve been a little more crispier and the buffalo shrimp did not come with any sauce (as shown on Unilocal) so… we did not get to taste the buffalo flavor. The Mac and cheese (to die for)!
We also had the greens and the Tahitian vanilla bean yams (yummy)!
Not good for sit down, and does not have many dessert options.

We came across Pepe’s Place on Unilocal coming back home from Boston one night. It’s a small quiet take-​out spot with minimum stools to sit and enjoy your food.
We have since been back a few times and every time the food is amazing! We agree with everyone else that the buffalo shrimp is the thing to get and worth going back for. The food itself is 5 stars.
Service is what brought it down to 4 stars. Pepe is awesome. He is a very personable man and I appreciate that. I can attest to the cook and the younger counter girl being the same. Very helpful and take pride in their food. The last time, however, a different woman was taking orders. She just couldn’t get it right. My bf and I both ordered the buffalo shrimp except his with rice instead of fries. The woman brought out the ling fish combo for him. It’s ok. It happens. So we specified yet again the buffalo shrimp. Then an order of the plain shrimp comes out. Ok. At that point he gave up and ate it, but wasn’t happy. Hopefully it was just an off day. It’s just not exactly a cheap meal.
Over all, Pepe’s is worth a stop.

Despite what the name of the place might imply, this is definitely a soul food place. 100%. And the food is fantastic! I had the fried shrimp and the buffalo shrimp both of which were excellent. Easily as good as any shrimp I have ever eaten from City Island. As far as the sides are concerned, I had the Mac and cheese, the yams and the greens. Fabulous! This place is definitely a gem. Give it a try if you are in the area!

Oh my, what to say about Pepe’s. First, throw all preconceptions out the door. Second, get ready for some food. If you like flavor, get one of his punch you in the mouth with tartness and savour fruit drinks. Then get the chicken or lamb or both over rice with a salad. His seafood is good too. Its like a food truck experience, but indoors, bros.

Let me start my review by saying that I am totally biased. I don’t want any reader to have any misconceptions.
My family probably eats from Pepe’s at least once a week. We love him and his food! We’re committed to seeing this spot thrive because we know the love that goes into every meal he makes. We tell all our friends and family about the spot. We send them there. We drag them there. You’d think we had some financial stake in the establishment succeeding. Everyone we have sent there loves everything they have eaten from there. You will love it too. If you haven’t made your way there… What are you waiting for?

We were driving through from NJ to Boston and found this spot on Unilocal.The owner offered us samples of the sides as soon as we walked in! The Mac and Cheese was great. We got the lamb and chicken plates and it was really good! Owner then came out to greet us again and see if the food was good. This is a great locally owned spot w great service.

This small take out spot is doing it right! I called in an order for a small gathering. When I arrived to pick it up, the owner knew who I was immediately. They appear to be a father/​daughter team (father in the back cooking and daughter up front handling the register). He knew it was my first time ordering from there so he brought me a plate of Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and collard greens to sample so I could get a taste of everything they offer. All the items were so good, especially the collard greens. It’s a big statement to make but I actually think they were the best collard greens I’ve ever tasted! It was a sweet gesture and great marketing tool to offer the free plate of food. It got me wanting more!
I ordered the whiting for a gathering but couldn’t getting the buffalo shrimp for ourselves because so many people in the Unilocal reviews talked about how good they were. Let me tell you. The reviewers are not exaggerating! That shrimp was PHENOMENAL! The breading was crunchy despite being drenched in this buffalo sauce. The sauce had enough of a kick to it that gave you the right amount of spice without being overwhelming. I’m craving the shrimp right now as I write about it.
Despite living in Queens, I would venture to New Rochelle just to have that shrimp and collard greens once again.

Soulful vibe, neighborly hospitality, explosive flavors, and solid food — this is a special place near Downtown New Rochelle! The slightly higher prices and eclectic menu remind me of food trucks, and you’ll find here the sort of experimentation with flavors and ingredients that such trucks are known for. Come support and enjoy this local joint!

Had Pepe’s bookmarked for a few months and definitely was not disappointed following my visit today.
Small stuff:
Space is small — definitely a takeout spot. No tables, just high stools and a barely there counter protruding from the walls. Not the most comfortable, but it works if you must eat there.
Not a huge selection of items to choose from BUT they’ve expanded their menu — new additions to come effective ¹⁰⁄₇. The current menu, though small, should not deter you from visiting within the next few days. What Pepe has here is LEGIT!
We had:
Jumbo Buffalo Shrimp (comes with a side of fries) [15.00] — I’m a shrimp snob, this was some of the best shrimp I’ve had in ages
Sides of: Mac & Cheese/​Tahitian Vanilla Bean Yams/​Collard Greens [$ 4.00 each]
Mac & Cheese and Yams were fantastic. I enjoyed the fresh sample of greens I had in the store more than when I took my order home and reheated it but that’s to be expected.
Chicken & Lamb Combo Platter [$ 8.00] — comes with romaine salad, yellow rice, and a lovely white sauce.
It’s good but not the typical halal you may be used to. The flavor is not as heavy. Pepe’s version is much lighter and tastes fresh. This was my least favorite item. I would order it again but not over the buffalo shrimp.
Gyro Sandwich [$ 6.00] — I did not see or sample this one but my friend let me know it was ridiculously good
Toasted Coconut Cheesecake [$ 4.00] — CRACK. I cannot begin to describe the flavor of this thing. Moist, heavy in weight. Caramel undertones. Delicious!
It appears that Pepe switches up the flavor of the cheesecake each week however I cannot see how anything else can match this. judging by the food here, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next variety was even better.
All of these 5-​star reviews are truthful. Pepe has something really good going here and he’s a nice dude. His helper today (Tobin) was a delight. Such a sweetie and very, very patient. These guys have excellent customer service skills and will not nickel and dime you. I watched them give an elderly gentleman a free bottle of water on the house after he missed his bus waiting on his order. Most proprietors don’t do things like this anymore. Pepe even came out and sat on a stool right next to the man and chatted him up while he waited for his next bus.
Clean establishment with killer fare and classical music playing while you wait.
Bring your patience or call ahead if in a rush. Everything is made to order so the wait can be a little long but I promise, it’s totally worth it!

Let’s be real. The menu is small. There’s not a place to really sit and eat aside from the counter seating.
But so much can be said for the vibe. First of all, Pepe is cool as hell. A friendly smile and attitude will help put you int he mood for some good food.
The menu is focused on a few items which is good. When places try to offer you everything under the sun, they wind up messing everything up. By focusing on a few choice items, Pepe’s food packs one hell of a punch.
The Tahitian Vanilla Bean Yams burst with sweet, but subdued, flavor. The Mac and Cheese is for real, not that wet noodle nonsense many places slap some hot sauce on and call soul food. The Roasted Red Bliss potato salad is such a fresh tasting mix. My favorite was the Northern Soul Mustard greens. Slight bitterness, but well-​balanced flavors.
The NY jumbo shrimp was tasty as hell and cooked awesomely. My tastebuds were ebullient.
So reasonably priced for such delicious fare and vibes.

For my trip from Laguna Niguel CA to Norwalk Connecticut I Unilocaled for places on my drive from the airport for a late dinner. I had to try Pepe’s based on the ratings. It was rather late and I was a little nervous since the small place was empty and the neighborhood outside of my normal surroundings.
Pepe welcomed me with samples and I really enjoyed the shrimp, sweet potatoes, custom fruit drink and creative cheesecake. He developed creative and delicious flavors with his food. The apple, ginger and banana punch was nice. The cheesecake unique and memorable. The shrimp deserved the many Unilocal accolades.
Great proprietor and place.

Wow!!! That’s all i could say. You have to try the shrimp here !! You just have too!!! Seriously missing out !!!

I actually found this gem on Unilocal while looking for places near my sister’s home in Ny! I was intrigued by all of the great reviews and just had to see for myself!
I’ve been visiting here in Ny for a little over two weeks and have visited PePe three times!
I highly recommend the Buffalo shrimp! It has a great sweet tangy sauce! I’ve also tried the collard greens, yams and macaroni and cheese! All of these side dishes are great!
On our first visit PePe allowed us to get a sample of all his side dishes. Please know that his potato salad has great flavor too!
My sister also recommends the lamb gyro! There was plenty of season meat with red onions.
Don’t let his small store front fool you! His food is great!

Very small place only a few seats probably better for take out. I was the only person there at the time so I grab a seat,. Wanted to eat my food right away, a brotha was hungry lol plus I like my food hot… Decent selection of Food not cluttered and didn’t take long to out…
I started with the Buffalo Shrimp. Taste as good as it looks! It comes with tartar sauce but the Shrimp are so good that you really don’t need it… I also tried the Yams, Mac N Cheese, Rice and Potato Salad… All were very good! Might make this a regular spot to come and eat or order take out…
The owner Pepe is a real cool dude… Came from out the kitchen and we had good convo… Definitely made me feel comfortable
The Buffalo Shrimp and Mac and Cheese are a must have!

I would give 6 stars if possible. Excellent, excellent excellent. We ordered the whiting with fries, fried chicken with Mac and cheese and yams. When my partner went to pick up the order he said the owner Pepe came out to chat with him and ended up giving him a sample plate to try. The whiting was melt in your mouth fresh and not greasy. Fried chicken had a savory crispy skin and again was not greasy or fatty.
The sides were equally as impressive especially the potato salad. Fries were fresh cut. This is a take out only establishment although there is a small counter with a few seats. My only regret is that we weren’t staying in the area long enough to eat there again. Pepe takes pride in what he does and it shows in the quality of his food.
