The owner was charlene… a few years ago… Dean was bartender. Great place… wonderful atmosphere. Gets crowded most evenings, but not such a bad crowd. Food was good. I WILL visit again soon.

The food is good for pub food, the alcohol we love, the crowd is good, the owner is our favorite! Really nice guy, always has a game on for us, good conversation, good drinks. It’s the craic for PPV sports and St. Patrick’s day, otherwise a nice little place to kick back

How dare you call this an Anna Liffey knockoff. You watch yourself sir(or madam). The owner is the real reason this place got four stars. The food is hit or miss, the drinks are pretty much the same they are anywhere, but the owner is just so damn friendly. If only he were actually named Sullivan, and I could call him Sully.

I was in New Haven on Sunday and stopped in here by default. Most of the places we wanted to visit seemed closed and I could not convince the rest of my party to get Thai food. We started with the Irish Nachos. They were pretty good. I got the shepherd’s pie. It was also pretty good. It seemed like a pretty normal place to get the same type of pub food you could enjoy anywhere. Our waitress was nice and the place was practically empty. She put the Flyers/Rangers game on for us. It felt dangerous to be a big Flyers fan in Connecticut but we like to walk on the wild side. The only thing I did not like was the paper rolling. The tables have paper on them. The waitress and bartender took turns rolling up sheets up paper on the table 2 feet behind us. This meant annoying, flapping, paper sounds every 10 seconds. Other than that, the trip was pretty enjoyable. My husband really loved his Guinness and corned beef and cabbage. His love of cheese, stout, and roughage made the four hour drive in a small space seem like an eternity.

I noticed the other day that I had never bothered to update my Sullivan’s review. I’ll keep it short. Over my three years in New Haven, I visited Sullivan’s a dozen or so times. It was never my venue of choice, but a large group of my classmates gathered at Sully’s on a weekly basis, so I have a bit of fondness for the place. I’ve never eaten there, but I’ve had beer and wine, and nothing about that is objectionable. I still maintain that Sullivan’s is a nightmare when the bar is crowded and you’re trying to get a drink. If you take a seat at a table on a slow night, though, the place can be pretty relaxing and conducive to involved conversation. Service is also pretty good, and you can get table service if you want to avoid the bar. I probably prefer the Anchor for an easy dive place to grab a drink, but Sullivan’s deserves more than two stars.

This place is a great pub or chill dinner spot. Would recommend going for bar food. Have not tried so can’t say if anything other than sandwichs are good. But if you have a hankering for chill cheese dogs this is the place to go. Good bar. Good bar food.

Pubby and clubby. New word: Plubby? Comfortable joint in which to relax after a not-so-late night. Seating/chair space is higher caliber than other pubs in the area. It was very clean, including the bathroom area. Kinda dark, but what pub isn’t? Staff was super-friendly and efficient. We had a large group and they didn’t neglect us. We only had desserts and booze. Large portions, but food was so-so. A lot of stuff tasted like it came from a mix. Still, when you’re drinking do you care? Also has the benefit of being on Chapel on a(safe) edge of Yale’s campus, so you don’t have to walk too far.

Okay, maybe the food isn’t the best. And maybe you can get the same drinks elsewhere and maybe a little cheaper. But what makes this place get a 5-star rating is that it is the Red Sox bar of New Haven and that Dean, the owner/bartender, is great guy and host of the establishment. I started coming here at the beginning of my masters, which coincided with the Red Sox playoff run of 2007. We won that first time, and I found myself going back and sitting in the same spot, so I wouldn’t jinx the team. Well, after the fourth or fifth game, Dean came over and introduced himself to me. And since then, he’s always been welcoming and friendly whenever me or my friends would come. That friendliness is what sets this bar aside from the other bars in the area. Whenever I come in, I’m always greeted with a smile, a handshake, and star treatment. I’ve lived in many other cities before and now afterwards, and I have never experienced that in my life. Definitely check out this place and say hi to Dean.

A good, comfy hangout. I’m giving it a four for three reasons: 1) Friendly, prompt service; 2) Yummy desserts(huge portions at very reasonable prices); 3) Good drinks. I can’t speak much for the bar because I’ve always sat on the left side for drinks & food, but the environment is attractive, friendly, and comfortable. We ordered the apple pie a la mode and the brownie a la mode, both of which were quite scrumptious, sweet, and probably sinful on the calorie chart. Whatever. I’m coming back soon!

We went on a Sunday night but monday was a holiday. It took almost 20 minutes to get drinks and there was NOONE in bar. I can’t speak to the food but the service was terrible. All but one of us tipped and she was chased out of the bar and the bartender demanded to know why she hadn’t tipped. My friend was so thrown off she went back and gave all the cash she had on her($ 3) but it certainly ruined the evening. We certainly will not be going back which is sad because we all really wanted to like it more than Liffey’s since it’s closer to where we live.

My brother, friend, & I were looking for a brewery in the area and couldn’t find one so this was by bro’s old stand-by. We got to sit on the sidewalk on a bright, sunny day, drinking beer and enjoying good food. I had a grilled veggie sandwich that satisfied. It was too nice outside to be inside, but the place seems comfy and«down home.»

The burgers are pretty much the only good thing on the menu, and they’re pretty good. Cooked to order, with yummy onions and mushrooms and blue cheese and what have you. The spinach salad uses real, full-grown, dark green, iron-rich spinach, which I love. And the nuts and raisins and apples are subtle and tasty. The vinaigrette is excellent. The Cobb salad is decent. The french onion soup isn’t bad. But pretty much everything else on the menu is awful. And last time we were there we ordered a pitcher of Stella and got a pitcher of skunky Coors. Ew.

I am very upset that nobody has reviewed Sullivan’s but very happy to be the first. This place is so deserving of a great review because it really is a great, chill bar. Around this time of year it is definitely a haunting ground for Yale law students, however, they are pretty easy to ignore. They’re always sitting at a table away from the Bar so that you can meet the real patrons. Anyway, the bartenders have been there forever and they are great guys who make a stiff drink. Check out their martini specials because they are almost always amazing. And of course they are always packed(but not uncomfortably) for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Seriously a great bar. Oh and ask about what the letters on the mirror mean…
