This is my favorite place to get pizza in New Haven & yes I have tried them all! Food: We always order«Veggie Bomb» and it has been consistently good. Plus if I am eating all those veggies I do not feel bad at all about eating pizza! Environment: They have a big space so they can accommodate large or small parties. Weekend night can get crowded and you might need to wait in line. Staff: Always helpful, polite, and on top of their work.

Didn’t realize how much I loved you until I lost you. Modern, when we were together I took you for granted. I walked by you every day on the way to work, but only occasionally would I go inside you. I thought you’d always be there for me with your perfect brick oven crisp crust, your meaty Italian Bomb, your savory sauce. Then I moved away to a cold dark land, where I’m lucky to drive 20 minutes to have edible pizza. Argh. Now when I see you I realize what an idiot I was. I should have eaten you every day.

What more can I say. Modern pizza is the top 3 of new haven royalty. We all know the other two. Won’t mention any names! The pizza is great here. Never disappoints! Always busy with usually a wait in line outside. We usually opt for take out and avoid the wait, especially in the winter. I would have given 5 stars but the service was very sloooow! Like they almost forgot about us!!! Other than that everything was great! Would I return? You betcha!

This is just what a great neighborhood pizza place should be like. Four of us came qabout 20 minutes before their afternoon opening on Sunday, and there was already a considerable line waiting. A few minutes before the doors flung open, one of the waiters came out, asking in a loud voice if there were any parties of six or more in line. Nice touch, I think, to allow these groups a chance to sit in the beginning without the customary wait for pushing tables together. The pizza was sumptious(we had the Veggie Bomb and the Moder Bomb, which was covered in meat… Mmmmm!), the service staff professional and the atmosphere very inviting. I wish Modern was a little closer to my corner of Connecticut, so we could make them a regular part of our dining experience.

Got off the train at Union Station, and within half an hour, I had New Haven pizza in my hands. Priorities, people. Was in NH visiting a friend(a pretext for going on a pizza tour). He warned me that Modern is very popular and we might not be able to call in an order for pickup. True to form, they left their phone off the hook(it was the weekend of The Game). We took a gamble and took an Über over. Much to our surprise(and delight), they were able to take our order(go through the parking lot to the takeout window) and 15 minutes later, we had two pizzas to go. Kind of glad we didn’t sit down at Modern. I took a glance inside, and it looked like the most sterile, soul-less décor. Wood panel everything. Anyway, we ordered a standard pepperoni and one with fried eggplant and hot peppers(red and green). The pepperoni was one of the greasiest things I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating, but it was oh so tasty. Crispy pepperoni with just the right amount of saltiness. The fried eggplant was also greasy, because duh– fried eggplant. Loved the textures and the hot peppers really added a nice contrast. I think I liked that combination more. The more pizza I ate(and I ate about a whole pie), the more I wondered what the fuss with New Haven style pizza was. It was similar to New York style. The ones at Modern didn’t seem to be extra charred, and were in fact, quite floppy(maybe it was the completely uneven slices). I mean, I liked it, but maybe I just needed more education. Good thing this wasn’t the last pizza I had in New Haven…
