I guess it is hit or miss based on your art preferences. I stopped in this week and really enjoyed the works of Jaclyn Conley It is not a large gallery, but then again, it is free…

Yes, you should support local art. Not because it’s the best, but because it’s local. Take friends, mingle, enjoy yourself. It’s too easy to enjoy Van Gogh, or Warhol; the world has decided these guys are good. At Artspace, you see the passion people have for art, and you get to understand your own tastes for art.

Not my usual cup of tea but I always enjoy something modern. My boyfriend said that I’ll watch any type of TV. This show featured many different TVs and little artsy clips on them. Ikea donated the couches. Also, there is a swing set a block away with a camera and a digital counter. If you swing on it and the counter registers, you can go back and watch yourself on a TV. Maybe he’s right. I will watch anything on a TV. Soylent green is made of people… and you know what? It satisfies my hunger!

Quite a lot has changed at Art Space during the past two years. Most significantly, City Wide Open Studios, the annual three-weekend art event that involved just about every artist in every medium in the city and surrounding area, has become a mostly dreary, unadvertised, unattended non-event. It’s a real shame that one of the most exciting and eagerly anticipated artistic events of the year has been allowed to become nothing more than a nuisance afterthought.

This innovative gallery, which features up-and-coming artists in the New Haven area, is also a non-profit with a number of outreach programs. Annually, it coordinates the largest city-wide open studios event on the east coast( ), connects local artists to one another, and in the past has paired students in local schools with professional artists for mentorship. While visiting, be sure to check the bathrooms, which double as spaces for installations, and to roam around empty lots in the surrounding Ninth Square district, where ArtSpace frequently curates public exhibitions.
