If you can find it. I’ll check this off as my 84th microbrewery. Comfortable simple. Worth the trip, just make sure you use zip code 17349, to locate with GPS .Three beers to choose from. We got the flight , pilsner tasty, dark(Dunkel)is on the sweet side

Simply the best beer brewed in the Baltimore area. The Pilsner is excellent: light straw balanced perfectly with spicy Hellertau. The Dunkel is extraordinary. Full bodied caramel and malts, subtle hops, as well as a touch of smoke. In a field crowded with extraneous flavors and novelty fermentables, it is refreshing to taste beer brewed under the Reinheitsgebot.

Don’t go to Gunpowder Falls expecting to find 12-beers on tap. Nope. They’ve got two. A dunkle and a pilsner. Let me tell you… if you love German beer, those two are worth the trip. It’s the best dunkle I’ve had since Germany. From what I hear the owner is a perfectionist and is still tweaking his recipes. I can’t imagine why, they already seem perfect. I hope he introduces a hefeweizen soon because that’s my favorite beer of all. We didn’t do the tour, but we enjoyed talking to the bartender. I think it was the owner’s son. Very much a family brewery. I rarely buy beer for home consumption, but I made sure to grab a couple sixers of the dunkle before I left.

Visited the brewery in early August 2013. The location is sort of out of the way in a business park a short drive from the Shrewsbury Commons shopping center. The entrance is a bar area where patrons can have the beers Gunpowder Falls brews on tap, or(I believe) purchase a case to go. The aesthetic of this space was warm and inviting. The time I visited the owner’s wife was operating the bar. She was friendly, very knowledgeable about craft beer, as well as the brewing scene, especially in this region of the country. Also available at the bar were homemade German inspired hors d’oeuvres such as sausages and pretzels. I did not get a chance to try these, however, they seemed like a great pairing for the style of beer Gunpowder Falls produces. The tour of the brewery was led by the owner, Martin. He had just opened a few months before I went and on the production-side it was still a relatively small business. Thus, for the most part, the tour consisted of speaking one-on-one with Martin about the process and the culture of beer-making in the United States verses in Germany. He is obviously very passionate about his craft and eager to talk about it with anyone. I am really glad that New Freedom/Shewsbury now has a local brewery. The traditional German styles of beer they specialize in is a bit too conservative/tame for my tastes. Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing how this brewery grows with time and what new additions they think up for their catalog.
