New Castle-Henry County Public Library

Very nice place. The atmosphere is really nice here. The sound is to a minimum. The selection is abundant and the helpers are there to assist. You cannot ask for more. This place is great.

It pains me to write anything negative about a place I loved so dearly as a kid, but when I recently came in to get a new library card after many many years living away, I was shocked by the rudeness of the employee who helped me. She first made me wait for some time while she told her fellow workers how she lost weight by stopping drinking sodas (admirable) but the conversation just went on and on, she made eye contact but didn’t even acknowledge me. When she did she was curt and unconcerned. She questioned me relentlessly as if she felt I had been hiding books for decades from her but did finally give me the application to fill out. When it was done she ordered me to the back of the line during which time I heard her being equally as rude to a small girl who was checking out DVD’s. When it finally became my turn I asked about a book I wished to check out but couldn’t find. She told me I was misspelling the name, which I was not (she works at the LIBRARY, shouldn’t she know how to spell???) and finally left me with one last insult by saying «I can’t read your writing or hear your mumbles». After so many years away and telling my friend who moved here with me how wonderful the place was after the renovations (tho i wish they had left the original Carnegie building untouched) she frankly embarrassed me that he had to witness her uncouth behavior. The only saving grace was that when the book did come in a few days later, I was helped by a different librarian, it turned out to be the same wonderful and kind librarian I used to know as a child, I couldn’t believe she was still there, as friendly and cheerful as I remembered, and she is the sole reason I have even given ANY stars in my rating. I have to say tho that I have been turned off to this branch by the first woman’s unexplained behavior and will simply go back to what I’ve been doing in the years since, use the internet and Barnes & Noble for my needs.
