On November 6, 2015 Herbert’s was kind enough to support a Celebration of Life for my sister, Barbara Waterbury. Herbert’s was Bobbi’s favorite Mexican food restaurant. I believe Bobbi would approve of this review. I enjoyed the food as well on that night. It was very kind of Bobby Rizk to support us in remembering Bobbi. Bobby Rizk was also kind enough to pose with Roger the Duck and a bottle of Leinenkugels Octoberfest beer so I could share it with my Wisconsin friends. Thank you all very much. Don Waterbury

Love the food. Very good TexMex on par or better than others in town. And they let us take our dog on their deck. Very pleasant shady spot. Services have always been top notch. Always take visitors here.

Herbert’s was pretty good. We had the Herbert plate and some fajitas. The food was ok. The service was friendly and took great care of us. The margaritas had too much sprite in them. We’ll probably go again.

Went there for breakfast. First time got breakfast tacos to go. That awarded them a spot for a sit-down breakfast. This place is absolutely no frills when it comes to the food(not even garnish — which I’m ok with). If I could give it a 3.5 I would so I figured they’re more on the four side as opposed to the three. The food is pretty good. The portions are just a bit on the small side. The have these big-ass coffee mugs which I really liked. The service was excellent. I think their focus is on dinner and their outside area which I’ll be visiting once it’s not lava hot at night.

I agree that the one is San Marcos is better. I went in again this weekend and again had multiple waiters… I didn’t know who I would be tipping. After we were seated it took a long time to get our drink orders. The couple that was seated after us but close to us had their drinks and chips and salsa way before we did. The waiter we had seemed annoyed… I love the original location so I’m hoping this one gets better. I would make it a weekly stop if it was more organized.

I came in with high hopes but was disappointed. Staff didn’t seem in any hurry to seat us even though it wasn’t a busy time. We heard great things about the place. Chips and salsa came. Chips didn’t seem fresh and the taste was off. Maybe they were old? Hubs said salsa was fine. I had a basic taco plate, hubs had cheese enchiladas and kids shared chicken quesadillas. We ordered simple things. Everything was not horrible but just okay. Prices seemed reasonable. We weren’t impressed but may give them another chance in the future.

Meh pretty much sums it up. Back in the 90’s Herbert’s was THE place to go in San Marcos for Mexican food(aside from Mana’s). When they opened the location in New Braunfels, I was pretty excited, not so much when I tasted the food. Everything is just pretty generic. I’ve been back a few times, and have had similar experiences.

The restaurant was a big disappointment. Exterior entrance was dirty, wet and muddy. Once inside it feels like a trailer… Orange walls, low ceilings, lighting is ceiling fans with red, blue and green shades. Lighting is terrible. Not many patrons yet during our entire meal a bus cart full of dirty dishes was pushed throughout the restaurant. Chips were flavorless and after tasting the salsa, decided to go with a cheeseburger. Not great, unmelted grated velveeta-looking cheese on top. Burger cold but fries were hot. The other diners in my party did have mexican dinners and said the food was ok. We will not be back, many better choices for mexican food in New Braunfels!

We wanted to try something different tonight. TexMex was on the top of everyone’s list. Since different friends had this place rated from 2 to 5 we decided to give them a try. It was a rainy foggy night, & the parking lot was very dark. Rain had washed mud onto the entrance area. As my daughter started to start up the ramp, her feet went flying out from under her and she busted her a**. She was ok, but she was covered in mud. We went in and got seated. She went to the bathroom to clean up. I told our waiter about the incident and he reported it to the manager. He apologized for the issue, said the manager was going to put sand on the slick area, and then the manager would come to talk to us. The manager never came to talk to us, and when we left, saw that they had never placed anything on the slick area! Positives for the trip — waiter was really good. He kept the chips filled and checked on us often. He rates a 5 that helps offset the lack of concern from management. My food was pretty good. The enchiladas were worth going back for. The skirt steak was missing seasoning. The other stuff was alright. If it had been an old person that fell, this place would’ve been in trouble. Their concern for the folks that pay their salary is unacceptable.

I was not impressed. Salsa bland. Beans and rice bland. Flautas bland. Guacamole bland. Some day I might try then again but I won’t be looking forward to it.

See Ben W’s review… What he said! What Cameron B also referred to… This is ~NOT~ San Marcos! I wanted to give them a chance as i have been several times now but as I also see from other reviews they have a huge challenge in front of them. The potential is there although this location is bad luck. It has had more restaurants there in the past 40 years than I can count. It is a shame. I love San Marcos Herbert’s so much since my college days over 30yrs ago, it is sad they can’t get this one right. I do realize it is a different family member running this one. And it’s a different kitchen. But please try… 3÷18÷14. I think we waited more than 30 min for our food with hardly anyone inside the place. A few tables outside for live music. I can only imagine what it would be like on a busy weekend. i heard the manager talking to some that music will be regular thing. They need to concentrate on their service before bringing in more customers to piss off. Our server said another server called out sick that night but that is no excuse for the kitchen being slow. It’s Mexican food. It does not take that long to cook. It was after 8pm so not that many people in there on Tues night. Our water was almost empty and he asks if we wanted them refilled. Really? Then takes our glass away to refill. Um, get a pitcher and refill every table that needs water. «Wait On» and««Serve» your tables! Dinner was barely eatable. My companion didn’t even want to finish his plate. There are so many choices in town, we will have to save our Herbert’s craving for San Marcos. So sad. I gave an extra star for the Manske Roll(also a San Marcos fav) option for dessert.

This review is for one thing: an egg and breakfast sausage taco that was brought home to me by my sister, who loves this place. This is not a Seguin quality taqueria taco, it is closer to Mcdonald’s 99 cent breakfast burrito. Eats: –egg and breakfast sausage taco; eggs yellow not diluted with egg wash, melted American cheese, not cheddar, store bought quality tortillas, and spicy Pace picante quality salsa, not Mexican taqueria pureed.

Its not award winning its hit or miss. A great place for the kids but you never know what the food will turn out to be. Most of the time its just average. Once it was above average but nothing worth getting excited about. The house margaritas suck but dont most do? The downside for me is that they use what I call«rat cheese» which is the sharp cheddar cheap cheese that is too sharp for my preference in cheese enchiladas and toppings.

This is the second time in one month that we have tried this place. You know that sometimes they can be off once but after 2 times, we won’t be back. Ordered top shelf margaritas and they came after we received meal, which was a very long wait to get. The drinks were not top shelf tequila as it was a burn feel. Could not drink them. Dinner was ok, then had to wait forever for our bill. Went to cash register to pay and had to stand there for a long time to even pay. Everyone was complaining about no service and long waits. Don’t waste your time for this frustration. If they don’t care to have enough servers and bar tender why spend your money. Will be looking for new local Mexican restaurant next time we want Mexican.
