Hickie’s Hamburger

I’m guessing they don’t need my review since they have so many great ones. But, the greasy hamburgers are fantastic, served on wax paper, and served in a cramped and kitschy dining room. What more could one ask for!

A New Boston staple. If you’re traveling through the Portsmouth area and want to see where the locals eat, come here.

I’ve been coming here my entire life, and now make it a special point to visit when I’m back in town visiting my parents. I love the hamburgers and the staff make it even more special. The Big Yogi is delicious, but the little cheeseburgers are out of this world. Hands down, it’s the best restaurant in New Boston.

Burgers are very good, but small. Cool atmosphere. Like the 1950s. A true Mom and Pop.

If you are traveling to the Portsmouth area this is one of the places that is a must see. Authentic old style hamburger inn. Very much a community institution and no one is ever a stranger here. Make sure to order several burgers as they are small. Bean soup is also a nice addition.

Stopped down here after a work related day in Portsmouth. The burgers were tiny sliders and tasted better than White Castle (which I hate). I also ordered the fries with brown gravy — which was the closest to Poutine I have come to try. Topped it off with a Coke for what would be a traditional stop at Hickie’s.

Hickie’s Hamburgers in New Boston (two miles upstream of Portsmouth) is a Destination Slider Joint along the Ohio River. Jules and Walter stumbled upon this place by fortune — traveling an hour out of the way en route from Ingersol Creek to Cades Cove just to take advantage of a free room at the Holiday Inn, Portsmouth. Hickie’s Bugers may have surpassed those at Bates Burgers and Red Castle Burgers.

This burger joint is actually not too bad. I would recommend this time place if you haven’t tried.

Ever hear that joke about baptists not recognizing each other at strip clubs? Well, this place is that way for cardiologists. And nomnomnomnomnomnomnomnom.

Amazing burgers and fries. Get several of the double cheeseburgers, either gravy or chili fries. And it’s a very satisfying meal for under $ 10

The person saying these aren’t the best burgers is insane. I can tell you that you don’t have to grow up in the area to love them. I live in Anaheim California and this is one of my all time favorite burger places. I can’t wait to go to Ohio so I can go back.

I’m originally from the area and never miss stopping in when I am back in town… have yet to find any burger comparable to Hickie’s Yogi… and their fresh made chili is to die for… I even order Chili in the hot and humid months, it’s that good.

While visiting family, this past weekend, we all stopped in to visit. As stated by the family this is a MUST when visiting. We’ve always missed in the past because they were closed. It’s very similar to our Bates. Tiny lil greasy burgers. I loved this place because of our waitress (sassy, fun and engaging) and the soup. Yes, the burgers were good, but reminded me very much of Bates. The soup, on the other hand, YUMMMMMMY. Homemade goodness!

A hometown favorite. I grew up here and visit it regularly when I am back. Always packed and the staff while a little edgy are a lot of fun. Great burgers with very unique taste. Always get the bean soup and cornbread. The Big Yogi with cheese, 3 small patties, and coleslaw was a trend setter long before places like Red Robin, Smash Burger, and Five Guys.

Wow. Y’all need to get a grip. It’s a slider. It’s decent. It’s inexpensive. If I grew up in the area, I’m sure I’d consider it a beloved institution, however being told by several (with a straight face) that it’s «The Best Hamburger in the United States» is just absurd.
If you’re passing through the area, by all means sit down and enjoy a few burgers, but manage your expectations… and avoid the fries with store shelf tasting gravy.

The reviews on here tell no lies. Hickie’s is one of the staples of Portsmouth, and has been there for the years to prove its worthiness. The waitresses here are some of the saltiest ladies I have ever dealt with… hands down. There are quintessential diner waitresses you often see in movies, and these ladies have been here probably since the opening of Hickies.
Walk in and grab a seat, because there’s not too many in the tiny facility, which feels like you’re in a rail road boxcar. There’s a small bar you can belly up to so you can catch a glimpse of the grill, or in hopes hear some local talk of the town.
The burgers here can be described as sliders, so obviously, one is not enough. They’re greasy contraptions that remind me of a sister burger to Crabills up in Urbana, but man, are they delicious. The fries here are just standard shoe string fries, but what I thought odd was that you have the choice to order them with gravy. Now, this wasn’t country gravy at my first thought… it was BROWN gravy. Huh?! I know, weird, but it’s on the menu if you’re feeling adventurous.
The bean soup here is to die for. It really is, and I’m not exaggerating. They must have some magical bean soup trolls who makes these bowls of deliciousness straight from the bean soup heaven.
Prices here are fair for a good meal.
You might want to try to avoid this place during rush hours for lack of seating and also lack of parking, but if you ever find yourself on rt 52 east, then keep a look-​out and an open stomach for this place.
Also, tip the waitresses perhaps someday they’ll stop scowling.

Delicious! So say we all. Hickie’s specializes in small hamburgers made fresh from local ground beef. Both the hamburgers (80-​cents) and the cheeseburgers (one-​dollar) are similar to the original McDonalds hamburgers from 50 years ago. Even the kids will want to order at least 2. The fries are crisp and not greasy, and the fresh coleslaw is very good. Locals also recommend the bean soup and the vegetable soup. Service is fast, and the staff is friendly and attentive.

Hickies equals yum (doin’ it up for a hometown review!). Definitely lives up to the reputation.
No pretentions here. You don’t get a plate, you get a piece of wax paper placed in front of you. Burgers come out as many as the waitress can carry at one time (one for each hand). They’re small so you want to order a few. They’re greasy. And yes, they are delicious. It’s like dairy bar (and for those of you who don’t know what that means, then yes, you HAVE to check this place out) meets sit-​down restaurant. It’s fantastic.
Best part is if you’re heading through southern Ohio you are most definitely heading by this place. Can be a little difficult to get to if traveling west, so stop and get some quick directions, but just off the right of the highway if traveling east.
Oh, and they also serve up a mean chili, footer, and well, everything else. And nothing there is remotely healthy (it is southern Ohio after all) so don’t even ask… just enjoy!
