It’s now Nevada Theatre. A quaint setting in a quaint town. Most performances, although clearly amateur, are usually enjoyable. Seating was cassic theater seats and super comfortable until last week when they stuck those awful pastic cup holders onto the wooden arms which reduced the seat width to a most uncomfortable — squished size. Too bad they didn’t think that one through. And most important, beware of Legacy Productions, who sponsor events at this theater. If you express dislike for a performance they respond with name calling, retaliation and threats. How unprofessional.

My parents and I went to see a one man act around Christmas time at this theater. It’s in a creepy part of town. In fact, when we first arrived, I had a mental image of TV’s Cristina Mendonza announcing breaking news on a family of three left shaken in Nevada City due to a possible car jacking. I may be overreacting, but that was my first inkling of the neighborhood. When we did park and went into this tiny little building, my parents and I found that we were the youngest people there so I don’t know if the plays running there would interest any kids. We were also a bit overdressed. Believe me, there’s no need to put on your evening’s finest here. It’s open seating so you can sit wherever you like, which is nice. Just before the play began, the owner came up and thanked everyone for coming. He was a nice, earnest man. Perhaps a little too earnest. He suggested that everyone sing a Christmas carol to get into the spirit of Christmas, much to everyone’s contempt. Good thing he forgot the lyrics after the first chorus of «Jingle Bells» because I’m sure everyone in the audience was just one song verse away from slipping off their orthopedic shoes and hurling them at the poor guy. The best part was the play called«The Santaland Diaries.» The actor completely owned the stage and was hilarious. Everyone left laughing.

For a «professional» theatre, they are quite amateur. Over-acting and poor direction seem to be their main production faults. a note of interest is their stage venue in Grass Valley. The Center for the Arts. They have two performing areas, and if it’s possible to make a less comfortable seating for the audience, they haven’t discovered it as yet. Furthermore, little attention seems to be paid to safety regulations.
