Had the Red Curry Seafood the other day! It was so good! Not spicy hot. I have a very mild palate. Very tasty and delicious. So full of seafood and crunchy vegetables! I loved every morsel and slurp! The bread is a perfect accompaniment with the soup.

Easily the best food on the Oregon coast. Best chowder I’ve ever had, and the ice cream puts Portland’s salt and straw to shame. Chef Julie Barker might just be God’s gift to mankind.

Buttercup is amazing. I can’t decide which ice cream flavor I like best… they are all so flavorful and amazing. And the chowder– delicious! This is the most amazing takeaway restaurant on the Oregon coast. I’m gluten free and dairy free. Buttercup has many options for folks with similar allergies. Now that’s amazing!

We stumbled upon this place accidentally, and we were pleasantly surprised. The place has really nice homemade Ice cream, with flavored waffle cones! It also has vegan chowder with south indian and Thai flavors which were also very nice.

Wow, this place is soooo good! Their ice cream is different, in a good way. Very cool and unusual flavors and all delicious. Also really good chowder. This weekend was the second time I’ve been here. First time, had the ice cream. This time, tried the Salmon Chowder. The lady at the counter was very friendly and helpful. She let me try ice cream samples while my chowder cooked. I also ordered a small side salad. They toss in a few slices of yummy homemade bread for free. Two small things, I do wish maybe they didn’t put so much chowder in my to go container. I went to open in to put some Pepper on it and it spilled on the counter. Was nice to try to give me my money’s worth, but was messy. Luckily, I ate it outside so it spilled more on the ground. I do also wish they had actual seating in the establishment. Looked like they had a few T.V. trays and some stools, but would be awfully tight to set that up. I would recommend coming prepared to have the food as take out. Make sure you have a place to eat it. Outside of that, this place is wonderful. :)

If you’re going here for seafood chowders, don’t let them know you’re «leaving town». The lady skimped us on purpose by asking about our weekend, and once she determined that we were out of towners and leaving, she gave us very little seafood. We bought two soups: 3 clams in a $ 10 soup and so far ONECLAM in a $ 15 soup. Wow

This place is very good. The vegan and clam chowders are really delicious and high quality. The ice cream here is also the best I’ve ever had anywhere so far.

The chowder here is incredible. They have 4 seasonal chowders at a time. It makes it hard to choose. They will even customize your order depending on your diet. There is not seating to eat in house so be prepared to take your food to go. XOXO Buttercup!

Only restaurant in the region that uses local clams for their chowder. Vegan and gluten free options too! This place is delicious! I think this is the best chowder I’ve ever had. No joke. They have a variety of local hot sauces, not that there is any need for additional flavors. Once you’ve finished your chowder, you can finish up with ice cream for dessert. They have an eclectic assortment of flavors that is always changing. I think Buttercup will have to be a regular stop for our coast trips.

A must stop if you are traveling on Highway 101. The chowders are amazing, and just don’t stick to the standard New England style. I had a Caribbean seafood chowder with Calamari, shrimp and fish in a coconut chicken broth. Superb. And after chowder you have to have an ice cream cone. All hand made and great flavors, like apple pie and cheddar. The cones are crispy and delicious. Stop here for lunch and you won’t be disappointed.

The chowder is soooo good! If you want a really good bowl of chowder without feeling like you are digging into a bowl of thickened cream, this is the place to go. I just stopped by buttercup to grab dinner for my family to eat back at our campsite because its been a rainy day and we don’t feel like cooking nor eating at the same places we always to go in Manzanita. We chose the Northwest summer clam chowder and the Caribbean seafood curry which were both tasty and satisfied our craving for a hot meal. The clam chowder had a good balance of summer veggies, razor clams, and red potatoes. The chowder has more of a broth which I could dip the bread they provided into rather than having to eat spoonfuls of a gluey starch sludge as with some clan chowders. The seafood curry was a coconut based soup with cubed yams, whitefish, prawns, and calamari. I felt like there was enough salt in each soup but after they are prepared and laddled into their to-go containers your can add salt and seasonings, of which they have many, on a table near the counter. They also have a variety of hot sauces if you want some heat. I recommend getting some sriracha to add to the curry. Can’t wait to visit again and again to try other chowders and the ice cream!

We took a Saturday trip to the coast to escape the heat. A co-worker lead us to the Manzanita area. After eating fresh crab at Kelly’s, we were craving ice-cream( Unilocal to the rescue!) and wound up finding this place. YUM! I had a coffee fudge ice-cream with a salted almond cone and my hubby got a double scoop of marshmallow ice-cream with a chocolate dipped graham cracker cone(posting pictures as soon as I finish this review). We’ve already been tempted to make a 4-hr round trip again just for ice-cream. WORTHTHESTOP!

Not just a cut above, a mile above! Chocolate-coconut with salted caramel ice cream tucked into a home-made chocolate-dipped cone. Sumptuous, flavorful, exceptional. Worth seeking out in a tiny store-front along Nehalem’s raised board-walk. At $ 4, the price seemed fair for such a remarkable indulgence.

The special cones coordinated with each ice cream flavor are genius! I had the honey-mint with manchego cheese cone, which was heavenly – wished I could have tried them all.

Skip tillamook and come here: Riding along the rural Oregon coast, past dairies and farms, one would expect to find ice cream which is fresh and sustainable. This place does not disappoint. Ice cream: we had the cherry chocolate, marshmallow, salted Carmel and nectarine Very imaginative and delicious. Cones: Four types of homemade comes. Suggested pairing with ice cream! brown butter, chocolate, graham cracker, marscone cheese. We had the first two. Awesome.

This place is awesome. We stopped in for a cone after an afternoon at the beach and I was in foodie heaven. There are not many flavors, but the ones they have are very creative. They seem to pair the ice cream with fresh specialty cones that enhance the flavor. I had a honey lime paired with a manchego cone. Good stuff. The kids ate marshmallow flavored ice cream in a graham cracker cone dipped in chocolate. A slight negative is there are not many places to sit and enjoy your cone. There is a raggedy picnic table that you can access by walking through the nextdoor antique shop. Not great, especially if you are worried about your child dribbling all over an antique. I am already planning my next visit to the coast and I will definitely stop in and sample a new flavor.

Stopped in today to get some ice cream, and had my mind blown! I tried a spicy chocolate flavor — I think there was chile in the title — and it was hands down some of the best ice ice cream I’ve had. Plus, the lady who helped me(think she was the owner) was super sweet too, and let me try a bunch of flavors. I wish I had tried some of the chowder — from the reviews, it sounds like it’s amazing too. Ah well, next time. Thank you guys!

Friendly staff and the ice cream is DELICIOUS! I’ve been known to wait in line for as long as 30 minutes for Salt and Straw in Portland and Buttercup is as good… even better IMHO. I didn’t try the chowder this time around but I will most definitely be back! Yum yum!!!

Buttercup is open! This is the place to go for ice cream and chowder on the north Oregon coast. Julie Barker, the luminary chef previously of the Blue Sky Café and most recently of Bread and Ocean Bakery in Manzanita, has turned her considerable talents to Nehalem where she is making ice cream and chowder to delight the soul and tickle your toes. There are 4 chowders available from a traditional razor clam, a Manhattan style with a red base, a seasonal one(it’s spring leek, artichoke and purple potato right now) and her crowning glory, a Thai coconut seafood chowder that will blow.your.mind. The ice creams are just as creative with delicious house made cones to bring out the flavors of the ice cream. Genius! My very favorite are the semifreddos, which are an Italian ice cream dessert that is crazy delicious! I’ve never had one till eating one at Buttercup and(swoon) I’m in love! You must try the spumoni semifreddo with cherry, pistachio and chocolate layers that will redefine your childhood experiences of this flavor and leave you running back for more. Buttercup is take out only so come prepared to take home or for a picnic. If you are going to have the chowder later, ask to have take it cold or they will heat it up for you there. You can also build your own chowder as they assemble it for each order individually, so you can ask for more of this and less of that or just add something that might not be in that chowder. For example, I love potatoes but they don’t love me so I ask for no potatoes and extra carrots. Perfect! I’m a fan and have already been there three times since it opened on 4÷3÷15.(Pats her round tummy) I really must stop…
