I love the town of Nederland. Cute, quirky, not faux art-directed. This is a real, little, scruffy mountain town. So, when friends of ours who live in that area told us about First Fridays, we thought, great– gotta go. Sweetie and myself, along with another couple, drove up the canyon from Boulder Friday evening(June 6). Apart from the beauty of the drive, we shouldn’t have made the trip. As you can see from the First Friday website(listed above), an assortment of businesses were supposed to have an assortment of specific events and offerings. Clearly listed. For the most part, this is not what we found. We first went to Blue Owl Books. Not the friendliest place in the past, but we figured, maybe the atmosphere will be different on a FF. The website promised«food, fun and art!» Well, we walked in. There were a couple of older guys eating purchased muffins and coffee. That was it. The clerk(owner?) didn’t give us the time of day. There wasn’t one scrap of art. Anywhere. And, needless to say, there was no «fun.» Silent, dense, dusty nothingness. Okay. We next visited Peak Wine and Spirits. It was really only because of this pleasant experience that we gave FF2 instead of 1 stars. The place was giving a tasting of three liquors locally made in Boulder by J&L Distilling Company. Very friendly staff, nice talking with one of the distillers. Very good booze. Bought a bottle of the«liqueur.» Next went to Very Nice Brewery. Ah-ha! Finally some art on display. But the place was so crowded that there wasn’t one empty seat, so we couldn’t stay and order a drink. Not really the fault of VNB. I’m glad the place is doing good business. But a beer and a little relaxation would have been very nice(see what I did there? ;-)) On to Dam Liquors for art, music, and a tasting. Walked in the door. Huh. Other than two staff, we were the only people there. There was no tasting that we could see. And no art of any kind. And no music. ??? The two staff were talking together behind the front counter and never acknowledged that we were there. On we marched. Next? The Train Cars. No games :-(We really, really, really wanted to play at this point!!! We were so bummed out by then. There were no people walking around. Nothing was happening. No energy. Nothing. A big, fat zilch. We had planned to have dinner at one of the Nederland restaurants, but we were off-put enough that we drove back down the Canyon and had dinner in Boulder. I’ve got to say, FF will disappear VERY quickly if the participating businesses don’t get their acts together by the July FF. They actually have people(us) who drove 39 miles round-trip to attend the event, and look what we found. What is even the point?
