«The cure for anything is salt water — sweat, tears or the sea.» ~ Isak Dinesen Nantucket is known for having the loveliest beaches in the world. Sadly, most of them are privately owned. Thanks to many landowners, some of the beachfront areas are open to the public. In return, visitors are asked to treat all Nantucket beaches with respect. Since there are many convenient options for getting to Nantucket from Newport, I sometimes hop on a ferry for day or weekend trips. This past summer, we decided to spend a week there. We left the car behind and experienced the entire island on foot and bicycles. Cisco beach was a breeze to get to being only four miles from the center of town, and especially on the accessible bike lanes which seem to link across the entire island. Cisco Brewery is close by and a nice treat after sunbathing and pedaling in the summer sun. No public restrooms and the rough tide make this a poor option for visitors with small children. 40th Pole beach is best for this, but it’s difficult to find. Getting anywhere on Nantucket is half the fun.

Soothing waves… remote enough when people aren’t here… Easy to park… Good place to watch the light change and the clouds form… Stay away when lot is full of cars…

4.5 Stars is about right. Great sand, big waves, nothing but nature.(unfortunately«nothing» also means no lifeguard on duty). There are SOME parking spaces available but not too many. Very relaxing beach in the middle of nowhere, and I look forward to returning. The big waves /currents however making the notion of swimming a bit iffy.

My favorite beach ever… ever… ever. This is the only beach I spend time on when I am on the island. It is quiet, clean and you can spread out from the small amount of people that go here. The waves are fantastic for surfing, paddle boarding or boogie boarding, but definitely not the best place for kids to play in the water as the waves can get quite rough. Best thing about this beach, stop at cisco brewery on the way out! I was sad to recently see that since last year the beach has shrunk in half from erosion… what a bummer.

Awesome beach with a brewery on the way home! The waves are huge and it is by no means crowded. You almost feel you are on a private beach. The downsides are that there are no facilities or nearby stores for supplies, though there is a hot dog cart in one of the lots during the, and the sand in the water is very, very rocky which can be hard on your feet,(two of us left with cuts).

: All in one breath: The best beach in the entire world please don’t go here because you have the potential to ruin this pristine beach. Erosion has changed this landscape but this beach will have my heart forever. *Rougher waters, you may not want to bring the little ones here.

The night after a crazy storm and to cut loose after a long day of work, the boyfriend scopped me up and took me down to Cisco beach so he could catch some waves. And boy. did he catch a few! Chill beach, but pretty dirty at the end of the day… people really need to clean up for themselves…

A place to view the real ocean One of the wilder beaches on Nantucket. Located way down on the south west part of the island that not many tourists bother with. Probably just as well because this water can get really wild and nasty. In fact the beaches and even the roads down here are being eroded pretty quickly by the elements. For some reason the water on the south side of the island is colder than on the north so even in the summer it can get pretty nippy. Plus it seems to always be windy so that makes for some pretty heavy surf and rip currents. Of course there are times when it is calm and peaceful but I have seen it plenty of times where it is trying hard to kill anyone foolish enough to venture past the sand. For some reason for the last several years there has been an abundance of huge jelly fish which just adds to the excitement. Because of the surf and general chaos this is a great place for surfers. Many surfers learn there craft here and some excellent advance surfers are usually present to provide entertainment. Cisco is certainly not the best place to swim, especially in you have children you wish to keep alive but it is one fantastic and wild place to visit.
