This place is full of history, so much history, if there is no way you could be put into one review. It might take a volume or a series of volumes to get all the background of this house and its permutations. You come up to the front door and its locked. Push the buzzer and you will hear the clanking of bolts as they are retracted. For me a dosent appeared and proceeded with a personal one on one tour. How very nice to have someone who a lot about what was going on here, had just received their BS degree and was now working on a Masters in history. Wow lucky me. This house has been owned and lived in by some of the greats of this town, the library that it was used as was so extensive if the foundation was giving way. Now the books have been trimmed down so it’s a research center for those who want to know more about this epic piece of Texas history. If you are in town this one is worth of a stop. There is nothing to compare with a one on one tour, and all the questions you can muster. Enjoy your afternoon at the museum I did

Hoya memorial library, the oldest building is Nacogdoches that is still in the original location. The original owner, Adolph Sterne was a good friend of Sam Houston and Houston stayed in the house for an extended period. The second owner, Joseph von der Hoya bought the house for 500 gold dollar in 1869, and lived here for 89 years until1958. Free admission, but you can donate. Ring the doorbell to get in. The tour is pretty extensive and the guide is very knowledgeable about the house. Few interesting notes: — It was said when the Cherokee war chief, Bowles, arrived in the house to discuss the peace treaty, thought the marble table in the middle of the room was a seat for honorable guest and sat on the table during the discussion. — There is a 100 years old all metal high chair, pull the handle in the back and turns into a stroller, pretty advanced technology 100 years ago. — The dolls in the upstair room are very creepy IMO
