Great food and service! We loved everything! Small plates you can share prices are very resonable! The wine list is filled with great local wines It’s worth a trip to Murphys.

If you like to leave the restaurant hungry stop by here. Is this what you call a gourmet restaurant? Sorry to offend those who love this place but maybe you are into this type of weird food. We had to go somewhere since Sarafina’s in Arnold was closed. Since this restaurant had great reviews, we thought we would try it out. Here goes… We ordered the following: Filet mignon with purple potatoes. I got 3 pieces of meat after I cut it over a bed of 1 small purple potato sliced. And they threw in some fried onion bits as garnish. Ribs with some type of cherry sauce or something like that. It was spicy and just not good. Soup — minestrone… not bad but it was the size of a tea cup. Lamb chops — the size of a chicken wing. Where do they order the lamb chops? The best one — cinnamon eggplant. No one liked it. No dessert thank you. The bill was $ 95 for 3 people and 2 kids. My toddler spit out everything we gave him, hurled the lamb chop over the table and it landed on his milk. He wiped his tongue with his hand after he tried the eggplant. Then he asked for water. Thank goodness we sat outside. Maybe the squirrels will eat it at night or not.

Farmhouse décor. Not too many tables. Quirky, friendly service. Local wines. Must order: Mushroom Polenta — creamy, fluffy, gently crisped, with an AMAZING wine reduction.(Order extra flatbread to sop up all its goodness.) Lentil Soup — Interesting curry seasoning. Black Fried Rice — shows off the chef’s eclectic skills. Definitely worth a trip back.

We had dinner here a few nights ago. We thought it was GREAT! The food was really well done, the«dining» experience was even better. We ordered one dish at a time until we were full. The waitress, Rose, was the best… really…she was amazing and really made our experience top notch. We mentioned that it would be nice to have a candle at the table, and within 1 minute we had one! Great local wine, too. All in all: good food, great service, unpretentious, and all round good feelings!

It was great. The food was great, the atmosphere was great, service great. I only have 1 complaint really and that was that the front grass area furniture was plastic. This might sound petty, but eating in the front of this old victorian house in the shade on a perfect day is so great that it’s a shame to have wobbly plastic furniture as the only place to sit. SOme old guy walked by and saw us sitting there having lunch and drinks and said«this just looked wonderful». who the hell walks by and says that? It was so god damn nice that some people walking by even stopped and told us they wished they were sitting in our place. My seat. In the plastic chair.

We celebrated our five year anniversary with dinner at Restaurant 498 on a Friday night. We passed by earlier in the day and checked in about reservations. Thankfully the big Alan Jackson concert in town that night started at 8pm so all the restaurants were empty by 7. We arrived and had asked to be seated outside when we placed our reservation but they had reserved a table inside. Restaurant 498 is a converted house, super cute but very little dining space. So we said we would wait for a table to be cleaned off outside. Awkwardly enough some guy’s apartment has a patio that overlooks the back dining area. We contemplated what it would be like if they were outside on their patio, grilling, hanging out with friends, etc. We decided it would be weird, only to see someone come to the sliding glass doors to close the blinds in boxers or cut offs and no shirt. We confirmed the weirdness of that scenario. They serve food tapas style and even share their philosophy of sharing plates in the menu, guess it was difficult at one point to get the people of Murphys to share their food. We ordered the heirloom tomato salad, fried calamari, a cup of the cold soup of the day, the cherry barbecue ribs, and the polenta with wild mushrooms. We were told the soup was a potato, leek and asparagus and the waiter brought out a gazpacho. Said they must have given us the last of it. It was fine, a little herby, but when we ordered the soup we weren’t really wanting pureed salsa. The heirloom tomato salad was lightly dressed with oil and vinegar, Parmesan and basil. The fried calamari could have been a little more seasoned and served with more aioli(which they just drizzled over the top) but was very tender. The ribs were decent but we make better and the polenta with mushroom sauce took the cake. It’s a huge portion and very filling so we’re glad we didn’t order one more dish like we considered doing. We each had a glass of Hatcher Zin with dinner and shared a tiny french press of coffee with our crème brûlée. Their crème brûlée is delicious and worth a trip in itself! If you really want it and have a later reservation I would order it at the beginning of your meal so they save one for you, we got one of the last two the night we went. Our server was absent minded to say the least, but friendly. They serve local wine and change their menu seasonally. It’s definitely worth a stop in if you’ve been wine tasting all day in the area.

Wife and I were wine tasting in Murphys. Asked several locals for restaurant suggestions and Restaurant 498 was suggested several times. The food was incredibly good. Portions were just right and the prices were just right too. We sampled several dishes including the soup, Asparagus & Mushroom in puff pastry, and Chicken & Brie with Forbidden rice. We shared each of the portions. The flavors, seasonings, quality of the food itself was outstanding. With each mouthful I felt like I was getting healthy. Most restaurants I have eaten at, even the very good ones, seem to confuse size of portion with quality of the meal. 498 does not. The portions were so right that when we finished I felt well fed and healthy not stuffed to the gills and ready for a lethargic nap to digest the repast. The food was most toothsome. A complete delight for the mouth, tongue, teeth, esophagus, and stomach. A perfect Zen moment of melding the food and the diner until the perfect ying yang moment is achieved. My only regret is that I live 2.5 hours away from Murphys. But perhaps that is a good thing as by now I would have grazed through the entire menu and would be petulantly waiting for new items to delight in.

On a warm sunday night after a day of swimming in cold rivers, looking for gold, we wandered in here on our way back to San Francisco. This place is really sweet, the service is great and the food is delicious. I wish I could remember everything we ordered– I know the ceviche was really good, and the salmon carpaccio, which we didnt order but I am so glad they accidentally brought to us, is delicious. All their dishes are really prettily prepared and they brought us a nice local rose to try at the end of the meal– I guess the wine maker had just dropped it off. Great place.

I don’t know about you, but wine tasting makes me get the munchies. While I appreciate the convenient selection of pretzels and crackers in the tasting rooms, I need real food. Gotta have something in my tummy to soak up the alcohol! I knew that The Wild Grape had closed and that Restaurant 498 was now open in the former location. I had not really heard from anyone who had dined here, but I wanted to give it a try. They serve a Sunday Brunch, Lunch and Small Plates in the evenings. This restaurant encourages sharing which I love. I usually end up sampling food from my dining companions’ plates, so this is the perfect place for me. There were many tempting offerings, but I decided to order the pear and gorgonzola salad(yum!) and the macaroni and cheese(cheesy goodness!). I also sampled some of the brussels sprouts and panchetta which were TDF! It can be difficult to make brussels sprouts taste good, but these were perfection on a plate! It is also worth mentioning that they have a few vegan offerings as well, making this a place with something for carnivores and herbivores alike! I loved how the menu listed recommendations for food and local wine pairings. Even though I pretty much had my fill of wine for the day, I had to have a glass of the Chiarella Malvasia. It paired perfectly with my yummy pear salad! My only regret is that I was unable to have dessert(lent). They were serving a chocolate mousse and a crème brûlée, which is one of my favorite desserts of all times. Next time that crème brûlée is mine!

As KG says, after a full day of wine tasting, ya need some good solid food in ya to soak up all the yummy wine and 498 is just such a place to do so. Love the idea of the small plates and the sharing aspect. By sharing you get to taste things you might not otherwise try. I always thought a Pear Salad was for sissy’s. Ooops, stuck my foot in it again. That salad was very good and will do it again, and, the wine that went with it, well, was like being in heaven. And I don’t like white wine. I ordered their St. Louis BBQ ribs. My cute little white puppy? Still cute but not so white, she liked my ribs also. Those ribs were by far the best I have ever had. Even better than Étouffée and I thought they were the best. The service was superb, they even brought a dish of water and some food for Cianna. Now you can’t get better service than that. This is a place to go back to. I would really like to try their brunch. It looks really good on the menu. One thing before I go. They also serve several wines from all of the wineries in the area. You can pair your food with the wine of your choice or you can follow their suggestions for paring. You wont be sorry for trying them. Two of us ate our fill, had a TDF glass of wine, watered and fed the puppy all for under 50.00. What a wonderful end to a perfect day. :=)
