I never really loved this place but the sushi was fairly standard. Seems like there is a school of 10 years ago when it was good and a school of more recently, it went to shit. I guess i went right in the middle. But it doesnt matter much anymore as the excellent Gochi has taken over. That I know is the bomb

This place is masterful. There was a small snafu in which our appetizers didn’t come out until after the dinner but when I then tasted the appetizers all was forgiven. I started with a few tastes of my friends miso soup and was immediately sorry I hadn’t taken the waitress’s advice and ordered a bowl for myself. It was delicious even to this non-fan. I ordered mackerel, yellow tail & salmon nigiri. The fish was extremely fresh, the pieces were generous and I relished every morsel. (Wrote this last year when I went; I heard it might be closed now.)

Went to Sushi Tei this evening and it was still closed and the interior torn up. I guess they’re out of business for good. Too bad, we really liked the Early Bird Specials and their fish was always fresh.

Sushi Tei is our favorite local sushi place! Being just up the street from us, and always providing fresh, quality sushi and sashimi, Sushi Tei is our go-to sushi stop for take-out typically at least once a week. We usually keep it simple and get California or spicy tuna rolls, various maki rolls, and assorted nigiri. The hamachi nigiri is always my favorite, and the fish is always fresh and tender. We’ve never had a bad meal from there. We are always greeted with a friendly smile by the owner(she even knows us by name since we frequent it so often) and good service. We typically do take-out but when we have eaten in it has been fairly quiet, and the staff has been very prompt and attentive. The interior isn’t particularly fancy, but it’s simple and clean. They don’t have a huge selection of fancy rolls or unique cuisine, but it’s a great place for really solid, fresh basic sushi and Japanese fare. It’s perfect for what it is if you’re looking for simple quality sushi.

Came for the lunch hours and had a delicious sashimi bowl. There was a good variety of fish. It came with a few pieces of tasty California roll and four pieces of beautifully fried agadashi tofu. The tofu had an interesting, gummy texture, though(hence the lack of 5 stars). My sister ordered the tonkatsu bowl and the piece of tonkatsu was so generous, she only finished half the rice. I arrived early enough that there the restaurant was pretty empty, so we got very prompt service. The restaurant had a warm, friendly atmosphere and had an interesting private room with sliding paper doors. There’s a $ 10 minimum if you want to use credit card. I only saw street parking, but it’s located in a quiet area. I would come back and recommend to anyone in the area.

Ugh, never will I return here. I’d give it only 1 star, except the service was exceptional, so an extra star for the very attentive server. Bento box at the Early Bird time was terrible! Worst teriyaki chicken I’ve ever had. SO fatty and the pieces were too big and clumsy to manage. The California Roll was the same calibre as Safeway! We also has a scallop appetizer that was the most poorly prepared scallop I’ve ever tasted. Maybe the sashimi is good… Didn’t try it, and now, never will!

bottom line: decent nigiri, small portions came here because it was within walking distance from the office. the service is pretty friendly and i ended up ordering the chirashi. i definitely prefer the chirashi at sushi tomi as they offer you larger portions(mine only came with one salmon, which is my favorite). the rice was also not as good, and overall there was less food for around the same price. would probably walk the extra distance to sushi tomi if time isn’t a constraint.

Sushi Tei is a very nice restaurant. I would say it’s a little bit better than some of the other japanese restaurants that I have been to. The two times I came here I had the bento box for lunch. The bento box is a little small, but the food is still delicious. The second time I came around, I came around with my dad after my doctor’s appointment. My dad had the last lunch special that they had for the day(kimchi udon noodle soup and some rice and fried fish) I had the bento box with the salmon teriyaki and saba shioyaki. The only reason why I am giving this restaurant three stars was because I had to wait at least 20 minutes for my food to arrive. When I got the bento box, the saba shioyaki felt really rubbery and did not feel grilled at all. I think they were just really busy since the restaurant was packed on. Every single employee was apologizing to me after our meal for the long wait which I appreciated. Sushi Tea is still a great restaurant regardless. The atmosphere and the other foods are always really savory and satiable.

I ate the Deluxe Nigiri for dinner. The portion was relatively small considering the price. The taste was good. And I like the atmosphere of the place, something like a mixture of a genuine sushi restaurant with a bar counter and teishoku-ya(a kind of Japanese restaurant which serves combination meals). They asked us when they should bring miso-soup. Great.

Four stars — in the sense that you can only expect so much from a hole-in-the-wall Japanese restaurant. The draw here is the early bird special from 5:00 to 6:00… Great prices on a choice of 3 combos. Highlights = croquettes(breaded and fried soft potato… BOMB!) Sashimi was great, also had the spicy tuna rolls which were very good. The chicken teriyaki is pretty fatty. That was about the only downside.

This is a medium sized sushi restaurant on the other wide of el camimo from most other stuff on Castro St. I discovered it while waiting for my car to be fixed nearby. It is on par with the other top sushi restaurants in Mountain View, although with a more limited selection. At lunch, they have great bento boxes which are quite affordable. In addition, the fish at the sushi bar is quite fresh and the potions are large and well prepared. Service was great as well; the right combination of attentive without being obtrusive. I would strongly recommend this restaurant for lunch, and potentially for dinner.

A gem of a modest Japanese restaurant, ranks I believe with Sushi Tomi(which has higher local profile, wider menu, is larger, and has notable high-end Omikase options) for sheer quality as one of the two leading sushi restaurants of the several in this neighborhood, and prices at Tei are conspicuously moderate. I’ve enjoyed excellent sushi and general Japanese lunches in a few visits this year. A menu of interesting daily specials rotates through the week and some of them proved to be exceptional values. I gather that Sushi Tei has a devoted corps of regular customers that has kept the restaurant in business for years. Splitting an assorted sashimi plate among a few people as a first course turned out to be an instructive experiment recently. It sharpened our appetites like nothing else. Light seafood first-course«appetizers» performing their ancient classic role.

It’s been years since I last came here, but recently decided to come here for lunch. I was surprised to see how cheap their lunch menu was. They were mostly $ 7 – 9. Their menu is not extensive, but they have a la carte items(salmon teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, tempura, etc), lunch box items, sushi, and some specials. I ordered the Mini Chirashi with Agedashi Tofu. Since it was only $ 8.95, I wasn’t expecting much for the Chirashi, but I was surprised to see what a good portion it was.(Chirashi is sashimi on top of a bowl of sushi rice). There was about 7 pieces of sashimi which was more than what I expected so I was satisfied. The Agedashi Tofu was lightly battered and tasted more authentic than other places that I’ve eaten it at. Overall, it was a satisfying lunch and service was good so I’ll be back again.

Hey everyone in Unilocal! Well, let me start by saying this restaurant is amazing! If you are looking for a traditional scenery and awesome Japanese food, Sushi Tei is the place to go. First, the décor of the restaurant is awesome, with the tables and set-up, I felt like I was in Japan haha. Secondly, the price of the food is very well compared to other Japanese restaurants. Their lunch specials are a great deal, great price and can feed about two people. The food is always hot and tastes fresh and its just great for me. I have nothing bad to say about this restaurant. If you are looking for an awesome Japanese food go here! :)

— — — -LUNCH ONLY — — — - Ordered the lunch combo with tempura, chicken teriyaki, and CA rolls. Decent portions for a good price. The CA rolls are a little bit of a cop out. Instead of avacado, they put, what tastes like asparagus in there with a tiny bit of avacado haha. you’re not fooling me! The service is friendly and attentive. There wasn’t a wait at all even at peak lunch hour so that’s awesome too. Overall, it’s okay. There’s better sushi joints out there but if you’re not picky, want a quick lunch and want your sushi fix, then just come here.

Ah, sushi. Everyone has their spot they swear by, and here’s mine. On the less-populated side of Castro St., Sushi Tei’s prices vary from very affordable(their bento box lunch specials) to pretty damn pricey(sashimi combo)…but the quality of food is always consistently good. Coupled with quick and friendly service, this place is on my regular lunchtime rotation.

I haven’t been there in a while; since I moved out of the area. But I keep planning on going back. They’re pricy, actually pretty high up there for sushi. But their fish is sooooo fresh! This is the DA place to get sashimi — melts in your mouth fresh! I also think they have the best spicy tuna roll ever. Though a friend of mine tried and disagreed; so go figure… Their spicy sauce that they mix with the tuna is so good, and they serve the rolls by topping them with extra spicy tuna salad, so you get even more of that deliciousness. I recommend if you’re willing to spend some money(maybe $ 30 a person) but to get a real amazing sushi meal.

I have been coming here for years since my mom’s friend took me here. We only order the sashimi and nigiri, alwasy fresh and delicious. This is not the place to eat teriyaki, tempura or one of those California/zombi/catierpiller rolls with cream cheese and kiwi. This is also one of the rare Japanese owned and run restaurant in the area. So, if you are hankering for just plain nigiri or sashimi, this is the place… enjoy!

Ahhh, Sushi Tei. You were a sea of calm in a sushi night clusterf*ck. We started off going to Yakko over on Dana street, as they have the best baked roll ever(the«Lion King») which is on their menu somewhere near the«new girlfriend special» and the«screaming orgasm roll.» But after 25 minutes or so of being ignored by their one server(understaffed much?) among maybe 10 dining groups there we gave up. We couldn’t even get the server’s attention to tell her we were leaving. So we enter Sushi Tei, our backup, where we’d never been. A much more traditional and less kitschy interior greet us, as do some three waitresses and a hostess. It’s clean and nice but not formal. A few families with well-behaved children are seated. We can tell we’re in for a different experience. One of the servers promptly gives us a menu, answers our questions(or some of them, see below) and takes our order. We ordered some appetizers and some sushi, but it all arrived pretty much at the same time. The miso soup was excellent, but the salad was a miss(it had some non-typical dressing when we were craving that awesome sesame one they usually use). In the nigiri department, the salmon was good, but the«whtie fish» and«albacore» were disappointments. We ordered both on the hope that at least one of them would be escolar and neither would be seared.(As sushi connoisseurs in the Bay area know, no two sushi places seem to have the same translations of albacore, escolar, white fish, or white tuna.) What we got was seared albacore and some chewy fish that happened to be white, perhaps cod. Oh well, that’s the price of trial and error. But the ultimate winner was their pork appetizer, something starting with the letter K(no, not kurabota which I had thought it might be).(They had two special pork appetizers so you want the one spelled with a K.) It was super rich and fatty, kind of like the Dong Po pork I’d had in Hongzhou, China. Yummmmm… I was full but thought of ordering another one. Yum.

3.5 I’ve been here once with Ryan for lunch and I was not really a fan. The rolls had too much rice and everything else was meh. Last night my friend(who conveniently resides in Mtn View) and I decided to do sushi and he was adamant about this place. Fine, I said. We sat at the sushi bar and I told the sushi chef to make us «whatever». Yes, that was the exact term«whatever». Keep in mind that I haven’t had sashimi for years. I’m all about the rolls, but I wanted to be adventurous. He made us red snapper, mackerel, uni, toro, etc. I do not know all the fancy Japanese words for these. I just know that I picked the pieces off with my chopsticks and savored the freshness with each bite. I have to admit, it was very good. We also ordered the sauteed peppers and lightly fried soft tofu. They were both good as well(not as good as Tanto, but good enough). The staff is very friendly and they kept refilling my green tea. We talked and sipped our tea lesiurely after the meal and we did not feel rushed. Then I looked at the clock. Crap, it’s 9:30PM, got to go home and watch some Michael Phelps. ;) Overall, a solid sushi place and I would go again if I was in the mood for fresh fish.
