We were going through a difficult major remodel with a contractor who just didn’t seem to be doing things correctly. Some mistakes were obvious(crooked mounted kitchen cabinets, gaps in hardwood flooring). I had some suspicions about other things, but I’m not a contractor so what do I know? Luckily a family member suggested that we hire our own independent contractor, either a retired building inspector or someone who does home inspections. So we brought Brian in. Brian came in to do a visual assessment and gave his personal opinion about what we thought were defects. He followed up with his personal connections on things he was not sure about. That evening he provided a report and pointed out some key defects and obvious shameful contractor behavior and these were backed up by photographs. For example, how would you feel if your contractor sawed wood inside your home, over your brand new hardwood floor that he had just installed? Even after being asked not to do this, they continued to get caught sawing wood inside our home. After the photographic evidence and a special spot in the report, the contractor took much more care and even kept all tools and equipment off our new window sills and counters. We arranged for Brian to make a second visit and third visit. The final visit involved helping us come up with a punch list of items that needed the contractor to repair before the job was considered complete. One Stop Inspection Services got our project back on track and kept our contractor(more) honest. Our contractor went back in and fixed issues that he had initially refused to fix before we brought Brian in. And it didn’t even cost that much. If in doubt, hire your own independent home inspector investigate any concerns you might have about the kind of work your contractor is doing.
