Yum yum, my first taste of Mexican food IN Texas! It was excellent! Not as orgasmic as I thought it would be(most probably due to a case of my own over built up expectations), but first class and extremely tasty nonetheless. I searched the whole town of Mt. Peasant via Unilocal and not only were there no reviews of Mexican joints in town, there weren’t any reviews of ANYTHING! So… I guessed at which one, no matter how uncharted and anonymous, would be the diviest, most non-chainy one that there was and I think Michoacan was the perfect choice. As you can see from the pix, Michoacan is about as far away from a «Don Pablo’s» or «El Rodeo» as you can get. Also as you can see from the pix, the food is outstanding! It’s as good or even better than it looks, too. I do believe that Michoacan is best known for their regional Mexican seafood preparations, but since my buddy and I were in just for just lunch, we(or at least I) decided to keep it simple. It’s a spacious though humble restaurant and despite its age it is remarkably clean. Upon entry, your gracious server will greet you, bring over a gratis basket of very good chips with two excellent salsas, one hot and one regular and take your drink order. We ordered giant homemade tamarindos since we didn’t see beer offered in this dry county eatery. We were not disappointed by our choice either(refills are half price). My lunch was sopes de carnitas. Everything on these were exemplary from the smooth beans to the tasty, crackly carnitas, but what stood out for me were the shells. They were extremely fresh and had about a millimeter of crispy crackliness on their outside but were corny yet delicate and pliant on the inside. Definitely homemade and the best sope shells I’ve ever experienced in my long and illustrious career of sope eating! A real bargain @ four for $ 5.46 too. After finishing them off I was stuffed! My friend had the slightly heavier dish of pork chops with green sauce. The chops looked amazing and he said they were some of the most delicious and tender he’d had. I tasted the green sauce and it was indeed complex and uniquely flavorful. He ended up so stuffed he couldn’t finish his rice or beans. His lunch was $ 5.46 too. Whatever these guys are doing, they’re doing it right! The service was extremely pleasant and attentive yet unobtrusive and the giant screen TV that spouted Mexican music videos kept us very entertained without dominating the small town atmosphere. I’ll probably never find myself back in Mt. Pleasant again, but if you do and don’t end up checking out Michoacan, you’ll be a darned fool! I’d like to make a special trip back just to sample their mariscos. Thanks Michoacan, for my tastily delightful and positively memorable introduction to Mexican food the way it’s done in Texas!
