Widow Kip’s Country Inn

Bob and Betty were lovely hosts! The inn was clean and comfortable. I’d happily come back to stay!

I cannot recommend this place enough!!! My boyfriend and I stayed here in late July for a quick weekend getaway from DC. The owners of the inn were absolutely fabulous, so welcoming and warm, we truly felt welcomed into their home.
The breakfasts were fantastic; mostly variations on pancakes and French toasts (heavier than what I would have made myself at home, but hey, we were on vacation!). We ate in the dining room at a large table with other guests. It was great making acquaintances over those few days; getting to see them in the mornings and compare notes about what we’d seen/​done the day before.
The location was great, we had no problem exploring local wineries and small towns in the area. At the suggestion of the owners, we visited a local civil war museum and battlefield which were truly fascinating. We even made it to Monticello!
All in all it was a perfect stay, we would love to go back!

First, I suggest getting written, detailed confirmation from the inn-​keeper because the cottage we were given is not the one we booked. Next, we were told there were no additional charges for pets — but alas, upon arrival, we were charged an additional pet fee (which, according to Betty was discounted because we should have gotten charged two pet fees, for two pets).
If one were to assume that the owner of this establishment made an honest mistake in booking (which we sincerely doubt because coincidentally the guests who were given our cottage were staying for 3 nights and we were only staying for 1), then obviously the innkeeper would do their utmost to make sure the guest that had been inconvenienced could remain satisfied. We did give the innkeeper that opportunity and after learning upon arrival that we did not have the cottage with a kitchenette that we reserved more than a month prior, we explained that the reason we booked the kitchenette was because one of us is an early riser and wanted to have coffee first thing in the morning. We simply received a blank stare in response. We then suggested supplying us with a coffeemaker and we would make the best of a bad situation (since we brought coffee, creamer and other items with us for our kitchenette). Another blank stare and she just responded that she didn’t have a coffeemaker.
Betty is not a good hostess. I have been in the service industry many years myself and I can assure you that our situation could have been turned around if she had just taken an interest in our comfort. The cottage we stayed in was small but tidy with a mix of gently used and well worn furnishings. Certainly this little room was not worth the almost $ 170 fee we paid just to bring our two dogs along. It did not even have a bathtub — instead an old fiberglass shower.
The property is located on a nice, well landscaped area and we cannot tell you about the breakfast because we were long gone before that was ever served (we had to leave early anyway to go and get some coffee). I can imagine with different owners that it could be an enjoyable stay with pets but quite frankly the price is way too high for the value.

I just spent the weekend at Widow Kip’s with my boyfriend and it was absolutely wonderful!
Bob and Betty are such great hosts! We had delicious breakfasts, clean rooms and lovely conversations.
We will be back!
