Hunan Wok

Hunan Wok (identified as only, «Hunan» on the sign above the shop), is a fairly typical Chinese/​American suburban restaurant in the Fairgrounds Shopping Plaza just outside downtown Mt. Holly. The menu is what you expect to find in such places. It is set up primarily for takeout, but offers a few tables for those who prefer to eat in, as I did.
My lunch consisted of Sesame Chicken, Fried Rice, & Wonton Soup. It was served to me in the takeout containers, with plastic utensils. The soup was straight up chicken bouillon and the wontons were thick skinned and of average quality. The Chicken itself was plentiful with a mix of white and dark meat, breaded, and drowned in dark amber goopy sauce, with sesame seeds sprinkled on top. It was not bad, but undistinguishable from most other such joints. The rice had been prepared in the same soup mix as the wonton, and carried the same yellow color. More than enough, but not worth carbing out on.
Service was fine. The proprietress was engaged and efficient. The price was under $ 7 with a soft drink.

They are fast with their pick up times. I’ve never ordered delivery so not sure about that. They usually get the orders correct, there has only been one time when it wasn’t out of the numerous occasions I’ve ordered from there. Best chicken and broccoli around!

Pro: The estimated delivery time was 25 – 30 minutes. There’s a knock at my door at the 18-​minute point. Fast delivery is always a plus, I don’t care who you are! The driver definitely earned his tip…
Con: This is the type of review that’s most difficult for me to write. The food itself was not bad, but not stellar. I had the boneless spare ribs, house special egg foo young, and and scallops w/​garlic sauce. There was no true «stand-​out» item; everything was just okay. I’m sure there’s better Chinese takeout to be had, based on what I experienced.
Bottom Line: It’s hard to truly rate something on this 5-​star scale without any «½» stars. Otherwise, I’d go with a 2.5 overall. I’ll try this place again and hope that I encounter a dish that is in their wheelhouse. More to follow…
