A little pricy, but I ordered the gumbo and it was amazing and the sweet tea was the nest I have had in awhile, gave 4 stars because of the hours.

I’ve been going to Mt. Clemens for work over the last 5 years and only discovered this place today. Man, I wish I had known about it earlier. I had the New Orleans Medley w/gumbo, crawfish & shrimp étouffée and the red beans & rice. MINDBLOWING! It came with a huge piece of the best cornbread that I’ve ever had in my life! I cannot wait until my next lunch here!

I lived in New Orleans and this place puts several of my favorites to shame. Genuine Cajun — no cookie cutter knock offs. Go here and laissez les bon temps roulez! My staple is the shrimp Poboy with either gumbo or jambalaya.

Excellent Louisiana style food. You won’t be disappointed. Very friendly staff. Decent atmosphere. Very clean. Nice to have some flavor and soul in the Clem!!! Only change I would recommend is to stop serving bread wrapped in cellophane.

I continue to eat at Gumbo’s because I love what they are trying to do but, like many Mom and Pop operations, everyday is a new day. I drop my previous rating to a solid 2.5 due to awkward service, cold food and being out of food quite often. Plus the gumbo is not very good. How can a place named Gumbo’s serve consistently marginal gumbo??? It’s watery, lukewarm and lacks Cajun flavor. How can they be out of shrimp, catfish and bread pudding on a Thurday afternoon? Why serve the food VERY cold when the staff had knowledge the steam table was broken? Sometimes you get french bread, sometimes you don’t. The waitresses can be easily overwhelmed and clueless at times. What’s consistently good here? I love the Cajun pasta with extra shrimp, the fried seafood dishes, and the bread pudding. Can’t go wrong with those(unless they serve it cold). The shrimp etoufee is usually very good but, frequently served lukewarm. The mac and cheese, collards, sweet potato fries and fried okra are usually very good but the serving temperature and serving size have been inconsistent. The hush puppies are good but they are very small in size and frequently near burnt. The Banana’s Foster is very good as well as the Hot Fudge Brownie, but the Bread Pudding trumps them all. The various sandwiches, salads and red beans and rice are OK, no big deal. Avoid the cajun wings, the jambalaya, the gumbo, and the shrimp creole. Bottom line: I have eaten here over 25 times and have tried pretty much everything on the menu. Gumbo’s needs to tighten up some of those uniquely Cajun dishes, serve the food hot, and provide more professional service.

Great food! Tried the jambalaya, gumbo and red bean supreme and they were all killer. One of the hidden gems of Detroit just around the corner from Eastern Market.

I happened upon Gumbo’s while at the local festival in my town. Their booth was what drew me in initially because it was cutesy and different from all the trailers lined up. When I saw the name on their sign, I knew I was ready to stop searching for my lunch. I asked for a catfish po-boy and it was a great choice! The flavor of the piece of fish was amazing, and it was deep fried on the spot. My sandwich came together in front of me as I waited. Not as quickly as they would have liked, so they offered me a free cup of gumbo or jambalaya to go. A very kind and friendly staff hanging out at their booth. After finishing my lunch I walked back by and made sure to let them know how tasty it was. An even nicer surprise… I was given a business card for 10% off a meal. I will definitely find their restaurant in Mount Clemens and surprise my hubby with a GREAT taste of Cajun!

Having been to Gumbo’s nine times now, I’ve discovered one thing — they’re inconsistent. At least the gumbo, jambalaya, and étouffée are(that’s generally what I get when I come here). The gumbo’s sometimes salty, and varies is the amount of meat. There are always two shrimp(sometimes with mud veins, unfortunately) for each cup, but the chicken and sausage varies. The jambalaya sometimes is dry, runny, overcooked, spicy, or mild… different every time. The étouffée is either runny or thick, also different pretty often. The hushpuppies and mac and cheese are always great side choices. They seem to make and refrigerate their mac and cheese though, as I’ve gotten it, eaten it right away, and had it be a little cold in the middle. Still, it’s tasty and comes at a great price. I occasionally get the cajun pasta here as well and, although it’s freakin’ delicious, I assure you a cup of it is enough — it is very creamy and rich. I’ve also had the collard greens and fried okra, the latter due to a misunderstanding while ordering. Fried okra’s not really my thing — it sort of tastes like a flower stem. The collard greens here are pretty decent, a little sweet and they’re really tender. I’ve had better, but the little sweetness and bitterness the greens have are a nice flavor change from the bombardment of salt in most of the dishes here. This seems like a really critical review, but check the rating. Sure the food isn’t consistent in how it’s made, BUT it’s consistently delicious, and that’s all that matters.

SO good and so cheap for what you get! I would go with the option to try 3 dishes so you can taste many items. The hush puppies are amazing too — just like my southern great aunt makes! It’s family run and so friendly.

This place is awesome. Gumbo is great. Cajun pasta is great. Cuban sandwich is top notch. Can’t wait to go back and try the bread pudding.

Service 3 stars-food 2 stars! 2 ½ stars was not doable. I was trying to find another downtown restaurant when I happened on Gumbo’s. This was on a Friday with on street parking and meters. I couldn’t tell the last time I had to pay a parking meter-well downtown say it all. I did notice that the courthouse was close by within walking distance. The dining area was clean and there was a regular person who stopped in. Next time I will heed the warning a colleague gave me. Remember where you are when looking for dining options. He advised to get Cajun food in places known for Cajun food. Live and learn. I used a take out menu and placed my order. the staff was helpful and courteous. My order was completed rather quickly as take out requested. What did I get? Well of course Gumbo, Red Beans & Rice, a salad and bread pudding. The Gumbo was good but I’ve had better. The red beans and rice coming from this West Indian lady was more on the bland side. the salad was good except the huge slivers of red onions was over powering. the bread pudding was disappointing and it oozed this fluid that was not appetizing at all to look at. there was a mushiness that I didn’t like. There is a choice of corn bread or bread with meal. My food items came in Styrofoam take out containers. I’d hope this is not the norm in serve ware. There are other restaurants to sample on this trip so don’t imagine I’ll be back.

Finally got to stop here on Fat Tuesday, and glad I did. Had the ½ shrimp po boy with etoufee. All was freshly made, shrimp was not rubbery at all, and even the bread was fresh. Man, was it good. We will be back.

Great food and friendly, fast service! Wow! This place is a gem. Their catfish is the best I’ve ever had, hands down! The chicken wings were cooked to perfection. The fries were hot and crisp. We also had fried okra which was pretty good. To top it all off, the chef actually came out to see how we like everything. She’s a sweetheart and can really throw down! We will definitely be back. This place is awesome. You can’t go wrong.

I love me some Cajun grub and this place does not disappoint! In the Downtown Clem, this is another of those easily overlooked places that if you’re not looking for it, it may not find you. I was looking for Cajun and was flummoxed that I had this place in my back yard and had no idea it was there. Setup almost like a carry out in the front, they have a full dining area separate from the register area which gives this place a very casual atmosphere, but not super casual, if you catch my drift. The Gumbo is the real star here. It’s the soup that eats like a meal. The chicken falls apart in your mouth it’s so tender and has a decent color to the Roux. I mean i’ve had darker, but not this close the the arctic circle. Big. Fat. Shrimp. I’ve had the Shrimp Po’ Boy and the Muffaletta and the Po’ Boy was really good but the Muffaletta was, I don’t know. not big enough? Something about the bread wasn’t quite right, didn’t hold up to the tapenade, or maybe i’m just picky. The Etoufee was really a treat and nice and spicy. Again, not enough of it. Service is like being at home, except you won’t get yelled at. Well, at least I haven’t been scolded for not cleaning my plate. Jump in here and get your Cajun fix, your taste buds will thank you!

I got etoufee, jambalaya, creole to go, tried to distinguish the differences… They looked almost the same thing to me when I searched pics on google. I liked creole, pretty good. Jambalaya was good too. Etoufee was too salty for me. Ate the homemade bread putting there, it was yummy! Staff was very friendly.

The good news is, this place has homemade, tasty food !!! I had the trio of Cajun stuff and it was great. I’m usually disappointed in Gumbo from local restaurants. However, this place has some dynamite gumbo. I guess if you’re gonna call your place Gumbo’s you should make sure the gumbo is your strong suit. The jambalaya was very good, but the rice was overcooked and cakey. I also had the Shrimp Etoufee, and it was pretty darn wonderful as well. My wife had a fried shrimp dinner and those shrimp were light and tasty !!! The place is two store fronts. One is just a diner looking place(where the entrance is) and the other is an indoor place made to look like it’s outdoors. There are some wonderful elements about the latter room. It has tons of potential and is a pretty decent room the way it is. Our waitress seemed less than interested in serving us. We waited a long time to get service, then we waited a long time to get our food. Finally, a different waitress who seemed VERYINTERESTED in serving us came up and got our food quickly. The first waitress would not get a good review from me. It appears they may have a waitress that they have a problem with. Overall, we were very happy and would probably go back.

My boyfriend and I stopped in at Gumbos last Friday after reading everyone’s reviews and seeing everyone’s scrumptious photos– trust me when I say that the food makes my mouth water. I haven’t been to Gumbos in a year or so. They look like they’ve expanded a bit since my last visit. I ordered the Shrimp Po Boy. Amazing! Fried shrimp cooked perfect– no breading falling apart. The bread is what I loved the best. Fresh French bread baked perfectly! So soft. Came with a bag of Better Made potato chips– made in Michigan food! And what I really love is it came with a bag of chips, not that they opened a bag of chips and said that they were homemade like most restaurants do. My boyfriend ordered the gumbo with shrimp and a side of hush puppies. Definitely very filling and flavored perfectly! Not too spicy but spicy enough for our liking. I don’t think I’ve had hush puppies anywhere else in the area and I love them– especially with the homemade ranch aioli! For $ 3 you get a huge basket full. Big enough for 3 people to share. What I really love is all the food is mostly all made to order so if you have any allergies or want something customized the staff is more than welcome to do so. Very fast and friendly service. The prices are spot on– low prices but you get a ton of food for an awesome price!

What a wonderful surprise! Recommended if you like homemade N’awlins food. No need for sauces on the fish or shrimp as the batter has a delicious flavor. The Seafood platter was enough for two with addition of the triple combo; jambalaya, crawfish and shrimp etoufee and mac and cheese. My suggestion would be to bring friends because the menu is small and you could order one of everything. *Closed on the weekend
