Amazing kids playground, hidden gem, great for a break on your way to or from SF. Safe, clean with cars and trucks to play with

Beautiful beach just down the cliff from Moss Beach Distillery. «Just» down the cliff. You can get an amazing view of the beach from the Distillery parking lot by hiking along a ridge, but I suggest you take the stairs on Cypress Road to actually set your feet on the sand. There’s plenty of free parking around the Distillery(don’t tell them I sent you) and the residential streets nearby(REALLY don’t tell them I sent you). I hope you’ve been practicing your parallel parking though! This beach is a great place for little ones and anyone with a fascination with marine bio. The seaweed covered rocks create little tidepools that are home to many a ocean-faring creature — anemones(look out for the squishy green ones exposed to air!), hermit crabs, sea stars, and supposedly seals(don’t hold your breath though). If sandy shoes aren’t your thing, keep going past the stairs and the trailhead and walk along the soft dirt trail. Follow the fence for some gorgeous views of the sea, and eventually you’ll come to a gently downsloping road to the tip of the rocky beach. Photo-op anyone?

I used to come here when I was much younger, back then it was much simpler: just a swing set, jungle gym, slide and a stack of giant monster truck tires which acted as tiered sandboxes. That was before Ambrose drowned(this didn’t happen at the park) and they built the statue of him. I remember playing with him long ago. The new additions are great though I do miss the monster truck tires.

This park is a fantastic creation by a wonderful community! We are so glad friends invited us to meet here! We will be regulars. Great for homeschoolers social and any sort of kid meet up of varied ages. Photos by Olma M. really show it well. Neighborhood grocery just across the street and great tacos just across Rt. 1. The dept. of parks(?) is working on it we see, but they sure could add more TLC and upkeep faster– to prevent more loss at this wonderful park.

Some of the photos posted here show the ocean, tide pools, seals, etc, but they are probably of Moss Beach, not of Moss Beach Park which is located blocks away from the ocean. So if you come here expecting a playground on the beach like we did, you might be a little disappointed. Deceptive photos aside, the playground here is fantastic! Clearly built with a ton of creativity, love, and community support. Kids loved it and we adults couldn’t resist checking out all the cool structures either.

My germophobia usually keeps me from taking children to playgrounds, but I also recognize the significance of play time and the cost-effective nature of playgrounds especially when babysitting as often as I do(note: Moss Beach Park provided some seriously good times for a 14 year old recently). Five HUGE stars because: — It’s a community built playground; — It was built by volunteers; — It’s completely accessible and ADA compliant; — It’s designed by children in the local community; — Free fun for children of all ages. Dubbed as a «cutting-edge fantasy environment,» the park contains a multi-leveled wooden play area and includes such features as «a castle, a whale slide, a lighthouse, a pirate ship, a sunken-treasure maze, and a rock wall for climbing. I especially love how the entire space seems so conducive to creative thinking. And I love seeing more wood than plastic in any play structure. Congratulations to the small coastal town of Moss Beach on a successful community project. I would definitely encourage other parents and caregivers to go out of their way to visit this park. Located across from El Gran Taqueria we spotted this unique park and walked over. This park looked amazing with castle like forts, pirate flags, a sand box… I was truly impressed especially when we read some park information and learned it’s located on private land and is a community built playground that was created through the efforts of volunteers and donors. The design pf this amazing park was based on the ideas of the children in the community. This is a great park and the fact that it was made possible by the efforts of the community makes it even more fantastic!
