We were coming to the area for a friend’s wedding and needed a place that did not require a 2-night stay and was reputed to have good food. The Belding House fit both of these criteria and then vastly exceeded our expectations. Breakfast was just wonderful, although there was far too much of it. A white-wine-poached pear, two cream-cheese-blueberry blintzes, maple sausages, fresh fruit, real whipped cream, and best of all some lemon currant scones that stole the show. We interrogated one of the owners at length about how he got them to be so tender(apparently the key is how he whips the butter) and successfully begged them to pack us a few more for the road. These were quite plausibly the equal of Tartine’s – reviewed here: would go back for the scone alone. But that’s not all. The rooms are lovely, in a quaint-bed-and-breakfast way, the place has nice patios and foliage, and fronts on a trail through the woods. The owners, Clif and Larry, are both impossibly friendly and fascinating to talk to, and their dog Basel(Basil?) is a sweet thing with a grass allergy. The only two things that were less than perfect were 1, that it was hard to enjoy the aforementioned patios and outdoor spaces in light of the overwhelming number of mosquitos, and 2, that the water from the taps and shower had the faint odor of sulfur. Neither is their fault(I assume the sulfur is the result of well water or somesuch), and in any case, these imperfections were overwhelmed by the scone.
