I love most fountains. I especially love stumbling across a beautiful fountain that I was not expecting. We found this one as we strolled around Montgomery’s downtown area and we were amazed at its beauty and practically ran out into traffic to get a closer look. This fountain is exquisite in its details and its history. It has been well maintained and adds lots of charm to this area near the capital building. Gorgeous!

July 26, 2013, My husband and I went to Montgomery with my daughter Noël and her friend Morgan, during the summer of their junior year in high school and Noël’s doggie Sammy. We decided to park and just get out and walk around. We feel in love with this lovely water fountain in the middle of the square. Gorgeous, well maintained fountain in the court square historic district. Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful is all I can say. the detail work in the The Court Square Fountain in Montgomery, Alabama, was erected by the City Council in 1885 over one of the oldest city wells, known as «Big Basin.» The fountain, made in Paris, France, is topped by a statue of Hebe, Goddess of Youth and Cup bearer to the Gods. Visitors have an excellent view of the Alabama State Capitol at the opposite end of Dexter Avenue, the heart of downtown Montgomery. This square served as the local Slave Market through the mid-19th century. It is reminiscent of old slave markets in other American cities such as Charleston, Boston, Providence and New York City. So much history in one area… Amazing.

Gorgeous, well maintained fountain in the court square historic district. Although I was born and raised in Montgomery, I never knew the history of this landmark. Although I am a fan of this gorgeous art piece, please be clear I detest what happened here. Nothing can be done about what has already happened, except live with love now. Here is more information from the Confederate Digest Blog: The Court Square Fountain in Montgomery, Alabama, was erected by the City Council in 1885 over one of the oldest city wells, known as «Big Basin.» The fountain, made in Paris, France, is topped by a statue of Hebe, Goddess of Youth and Cupbearer to the Gods. This square served as the local Slave Market through the mid-19th century. It is reminiscent of old slave markets in other American cities such as Charleston, Boston, Providence and New York City. At these markets, slaves of all ages were auctioned, along with land and livestock, standing in line to be inspected. Public posters advertised sales and included gender, approximate age, first name(slaves didn’t always have last names), skill, price, complexion and owner’s name.
