Came here for dinner and did the yakitori and some other dishes. It was quite expensive for what it is, and the dishes were hit or miss, with nothing that really stood out. Service is good, but probably won’t come back again. GOOD: — chicken special heart — coarse ground sausage — marble kobe beef — fresh oysters — almond jelly EH: — bacon wrapped quail egg — bacon wrapped enoki mishroom — thigh with green onion — chicken intestine — filet mignon — short rib — baked rice ball — herb marinated calamari — green tea ice cream NO: — salmon sushi — chocolate lava cake

Came here on a Saturday for lunch. The place was relatively empty, and there were definitely open seats but no one was at the front seating people. We went further in to figure out what was going on and were told to put our names on the waitlist because tables were being cleaned?(They were definitely clean and empty already). That was a confusing start to the meal. The food here wasn’t the best. The meat for the shabu shabu was pretty bad, the tofu was a bit sour, and they didn’t even have mushrooms! The yakitori was decent. The pork belly was pretty bad, but the okra and shishito peppers were delicious. They also had a pretty wide variety of yakitori including chicken meatballs, gizzard, thigh, fish, pork belly, etc. The hot dishes were average and the sushi looked good, but I didn’t try much because they were mostly california rolls with different toppings.

I really like this place. This is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants. I went there for lunch buffet today. They didn’t tell me they have time limit for lunch at the first. After we sat down for 40 mins, one of waiters brought a bill to us. He did the same ways to other tables. I didn’t think too much so I kept eating and talking. Couple minutes after, they came and asked us to pay. So I paid first, then I went to get some watermelon and yakitori. After I got watermelon and sat down, one waiter came and said their customers are waiting for this table. WHAT!!! I haven’t eaten watermelon yet. Just sat down. I felt very disappointed. After I paid, and they asked me to leave. What kind of service it is. I was unhappy. We went in around 11:30 and left around 12:50. If you have time limit, you should let me know first. That why I gave them three stars.

Great yakitori! Had the Kobe beef. It was cooked just right. Nice pink in the middle. It literally melts in your mouth. Ordered salmon sashimi and they were really fresh. The yakitori is just great.

The best time to dine is during the lunch time buffet. You can enjoy the shabu shabu, grilled yakitotori, hot dishes and simple sushi. The servers are young and happy people who are always polite and attentive.

Great food, good service, reasonably priced. We enjoy the yakitori, and sushi selection for the lunch all you can eat. Unlike other all you can eat that«also offer sushi, and food selections, this shabu shabu joint actually excel in other areas. The vibe of the restaurant is really good and lively, friendly staffs and clean restrooms. Definitely coming back next week.

BEST. YAKITORI. EVER. I LOOOOVE Shin sen gumi’s yakitori. My boyfriend and I have basically become regulars here on their yakitori happy hour days(WHICHAREWEDNESDAYS5 – 7!!) If you’re looking for something crispy and flavorful, I’d recommend the skin and pencil in ‘extra crispy’ next to it, so the grillers know whats up. Also, the intestines are super good too, and have a really yummy sauce that it’s cooked in. If you’re looking for something chewy and flavorful, I would recommend the liver and chicken heart, and dip that in a combo of yuzu(am I spelling this right?) + vinegar thats so kindly provided for you on the table. One semi-expensive item you MUST get is the marbled kobe beef. ITS A MUST!!! The meat is salted perfectly and crispy on the outside but super buttery and delicious on the inside. Other really good options: enoki mushroom wrapped in pork belly, asparagus wrapped in pork belly, GARLIC, and beef tongue(I’m pretty sure I’m missing a few but these are the ones I could think of while daydreaming of eating it again) Also, for dessert, the green tea ice cream and black sesame ice cream are AMAZING. The black sesame ice cream really captures the true flavor of black sesame(not like some other knock off versions). MUSTGET! The servers here are also SUPER friendly :) Tip them well cause they definitely deserve it!

Came by to eat here for Mother’s Day. The wait was pretty long but it was definitely worth the wait. Parking: Underground structure attached to the plaza Ambiance: Casual, nicely decorated Service: Friendly. Food: We ordered the shabu– one spicy miso and the other normal chicken broth. Both were pretty good. The spicy miso is definitely tastier but a little spicier than I expected. The angus meat was good and not chewy like other places. It was thinly sliced and even though the slices looked big raw, once it was cookies, it was easy to eat. Price: Reasonable. I came here the first time during their happy hour so it was definitely worth it then. Coming here on a normal day would probably be once in a long while for me. It can get a little pricey and asking for extra items of course costs more. Overall experience was good and I’ll definitely be back during happy hour!

We had… 1)happy hour sushi(salmon, taro, fish egg)-It’s in a good size that you can have it in one bite! 2)seaweed salad– it’s really refreshing. 3)salmon sashimi– fresh and sweet! 4)BBQ (quail egg, beef tongue, beef, garlic, ginko) –recommend people who have never had roast ginko to give it a try. It’s pretty good. The beef tongue wasn’t tender enough so I won’t recommend it. * The service is good and efficient! Will come back again!

Came here on a Saturday afternoon and found out that they are only serving a ‘Snow Crab all you can eat’ that day with buffet of a selection of hot food and sushi, and also a shabu shabu for each person. The food is not bad given the price of it for an all you can eat meal, the yakitori skewers and takoyaki are the best part of the meal I would say! The shabu shabu wasn’t great, the soup is not flavorful and the meat is not that fresh, but totally understandable since it is just part of the all you can eat at the price of $ 23.95. Service is fantastic! The work ethic in this place is great, there are photos of ‘employee of the month’ and monthly goals written on the board, which really show how much they care about customer service! A 4-star overall!

They totally changed my definition about sashimi. Their Salmon Sashimi I ordered, came with some kind of sauce on top, and personally I do not consider that a Sashimi. I would eat sashimi but this is not what I ordered. I dont know if I am wrong or something, but I am sure that I dont understand their waiter’s crepy face when I ask about it. «Does all your sashimi come with sauce?» o.0 ’no talking and gave me their menu’. «this, point on menu, that, point on my table lol, wouldnt recommended if you are serious about sushi, bcz wt they do is make u feel like tasting their food, and thats not actual sushi, and when u ask abt the rit one, they said you ordered our menu.

I live so close to here but I don’t come as often as I should. I came for the last great tuna carving but my father had some kind of stroke at the entrance before even being seated and we had to rush him to the hospital. Thankfully he is fine, but we had to miss the event. I found it a little weird that the workers were a little slow to respond to the situation and were unsure of what to do. Perhaps it was because there was a slight language barrier. Anyway, I went back this past weekend for a birthday dInner. And the food is still good, but since we didn’t do AYCE I left still feeling hungry. The food is good enough for the positive review, but nothing truly stood out. Happy hour here is good though, and I really loved the other tuna carving event they had. They play the drums while the chef carves the huge tuna outside and that one is AYCE. Just great. I recommend coming to either one of their events or during happy hour, but not for just a dinner. Oh and there is no ramen at this location in Monterey Park, so I prefer the Shin Sen Gumi in Little Tokyo.

The lunch buffet is a steal at $ 18.95 per person for a good 90 minutes. Everything I tried was good especially the thinly sliced pork for shabu-shabu. Do walk back and forth as they put out new grilled skewers every so often and you get some of your exercise in that way! Make sure to save room for dessert! I LOVED the Matcha(Green Tea) jello/pudding squares. This place must be real authentic ’cause all the workers we met spoke Japanese! It sure is going into my permanent bookmark for a spot I’ll plan to come back and visit!

Want great-tasting Shabu-Shabu AND yakitori? This is the place. I usually come here during the early dinner hours(starting at 5:30pm), but the lunch hour is where it’s at. The sushi was not that bad, but nothing great to say about it. But I really ADORE the chicken meatballs skewers as well as their takoyaki(octopus balls) — YUM!!! The Shabu-Shabu is usually what Shin-Sen Gumi is made famous for. I ALWAYS take my hot miso soup base spicy, but the sesame sauce for the kobe beef is able to cool things down in case a fire extinguisher isn’t available for my fiery taste buds. Both the Chinese cabbage and the spinach didn’t taste soft and soggy, but the tofu can use a little more work(the tofu keeps on breaking in half as I was attempting to fish them out of the soup). The beef on the other hand, tasted PHENOMENAL. It tasted really tender, and didn’t take any time at all to cook. Will be returning(for the x’th time…) :D

After my first lunch option was closed for renovations, I ended up here in search of deliciousness. I was happy to see a sign saying AYCE lunch everyday. It’s not obviiys, but it’s $ 20.50 on holidays and weekends, $ 18.50 on weekdays. Seniors get 10% off. AYCE included a random selection of sushi, yakitori and shabu shabu! Going with my mom and dad, my dad loved the shabu, my mom loved the sushi and well, I just loved everything! The selection is definitely not big, a few cuts of meat, a handful of yakitori and maybe 2 legit sushi items. But all in all, enough overall variety to make me want to come back! Until next time! !

We came here for the first time trying out the AYCE lunch buffet for $ 20.50 per person today. They offer a varieties of sushi and sashimi. I got to try their white tuna sushi, tuna sashimi and mackerel sushi. They were ok. The buffet also came with Japanese style hot pot and yakitori. The hot pot offered Kobe beef, pork, varieties of veggies and udon. The yakitori offered many varieties such as chicken wings, beef livers, chicken balls, chicken skins & shrimps. The wait for the yakitori was very long. They only put out 2 small plates of meat at a time which limit 5 pcs per person at a time. The first 2 person inline pretty much grabbed them all. I asked the chef if he will make more chicken wings… he said all done for the day. The time was not even 1pm yet. Then when I walked back again later, he was making some more. I gave up at the end since the line was just too long to wait for the yakitori. Service: they never came to clean up the empty plates, refill our tea and hot pot soup. I had to go bring the empty plates to them and asked for refill thru out our meal. I might come back again since the food was good here and it was a good deal for the lunch buffet. I wish they will put more yakitori out. The service was definitely lacking.

I’ve been here quite often as I can remember but I’ve never had lunch here before. At this time around, I went here for lunch with my kid thinking of ordering few items but found out that they only serve lunch buffet. It was a nice surprise since they offer variety of items included in the buffet menu. Most of the items are kid friendly dish too and my kid really digged into chicken karaage(Fried Chicken). The menu included some yakitori, karaage, sushi rolls, and others as well. The downside is the limited selection and quantity for the yakitori. The pepper and meatball yakitori was always available but teriyaki chicken wasn’t. Quite a lot of people were waiting to get the chicken and it disappears pretty fast. It will be great if they can maintain overall speed for all yakitori items. The best part about the buffet was the unlimited Shabu Shabu. It’s AYCE and they had kobe style beef, pork, and lamb meat to choose from. You get to choose three kinds of soup flavor which is miso, spicy, and plain. I became very full at the end of meal and spend about half of the cost of what I would normally pay for eating this much food. I would definitely visit here for lunch buffet soon.

Yakitori, sushi, and shabu for $ 21? Wait, unlimited?! Sign me up and save me a seat! It’s only offered for lunch time and you save $ 3 if you come on a weekday rather than the weekend. There is a somewhat strict 90 minute time limit and they do come up to your table a couple times reminding you, albeit very politely, to leave now. At least if you don’t come in the first wave of seating, you know exactly how long it will be before the next table is open. The stations are organized from yakitori, to hot foods, to desserts, to sushi, to shabu ingredients. When the server takes your drink order, they also get you your choice of shabu soup base. Keep in mind that the spicy miso broth is not really spicy. The yakitori may not be ready yet during first seating, so venture to the other stations in the meantime. However, don’t take your eye off the prize because once a couple of the sticks are ready, the long line quickly absorbs all the sticks and then you’re stuck waiting for the next round of yakitori. And yes, some people do wait in line for the entire time it takes to cook them! Their dessert selection is a bit slim, but do not, I repeat, do not pass up on the green tea layer cake pudding thingy! It’s light, yet deliciously filling. They also have it in vanilla and coffee flavors, but the green tea one is the best! Credit cards are cool here. Parking is mostly underground in the creepy looking basement floor level(do not look up at the ceiling; it may alarm you). Service is pretty good in keeping waters refilled and clearing out yakitori sticks and adding in more soup broth. Can’t wait for another return trip!

I had such high hopes for this place. Especially since I love shin sen gumi’s ramen. Unfortunately I left feeling underwhelmed. I waited about 15 – 20 minutes for a party of two on Saturday night, which isn’t too bad. The waiter immediately put me off though. He came to get us to go to our table and shouted at me «let’s go!». Lol I ain’t yo homie fam, where we going? The same waiter kept yelling back and forth with someone in the kitchen on the top of his lungs. Home slice also only poured water half full for me. Not impressed with the service. The music was super random too lol. When we first got there, head bangin’ rock music was on super loudly. Then crazy dubstep EDM and then throwback to 2003 Lil Bow Wow. Too loud and did not flow well at all haha. Anyhow, I ordered a spicy miso pot with chuck eye roll beef. This comes with the 6oz or beef and a plate of vegetables. I’m not sure why this warranted $ 19.99, I thought that was pricey for the same shabu you can find at other places for $ 15 tops. Chicken was the same price. This was decent, nothing over the top or amazing but it wasn’t bad. I don’t think it’s worth the price though. I tried a few yakitori as well, overall I think it’s only alright and not great. Nothing stood out to me in particular. I expected yakitori to me on the pricier side, that’s fine but again I don’t think it’s worth the prices. Also ordered a rainbow roll. I didn’t really even want to finish this. Flavorless and fish was a little dry and not the freshest. The food is 3 stars in my opinion, but they do have lunch buffet specials where you get ayce selected yakitori and shabu as well. It’s about $ 20 I believe and not a bad deal for those of you that can eat a lot.
