This place is my absolute favorite spot to grab meat for Hot Pot. The small orders of meat is 1 pound and the large meat is 3 pounds. Usually, if I’m having hot pot with 7 people, I will buy 1 small and 1 large and it’s plenty. The ladies there speak very limited English, but they understand enough. They do take credit, but I’m not sure what their minimum is. Def come here for meat, it’s more affordable than if you were to buy from the supermarket.

If it was just food alone… i would give this place 4 stars. I used to frequently grab lunch here as my office is on the same block. The reason this place is getting only 1 star from me is due to the owner ripping me and my fellow coworkers off constantly. if you don’t give her the EXACTLY change… she rounds up the bill amount.(if you lunch is $ 11.45 she will take $ 11.50 from you… on some instances. she has taken more and just says she doesn’t have change).

Thinly sliced lamb is better than beef. Beef slices came with too much fat. You’d better plan to order ahead of time in order to avoid holiday crowds.

The dishes are not that good and they are not Beijing traditional dishes. Service is also bad. Won’t go there again.

A few ownership changes throughout the years, but still pretty much the same menu. Virtually empty. Still great Chinese comfort food. Reasonable prices. Excellent dumplings and pancakes. Delicious mushu pork and muxu chaobing. They specialize in lamb, though, so order any of the lamb dishes(lamb with garlic stems; lamb with sour napa cabbage; lamb noodle soup). They also offer frozen hot pot/shabu shabu meat by the party tray, and giant fresh-baked flaky pastries(Beijing-style shao bing). Just ask.

Found this place by accident. Used my basic Chinese to ask what’s good here. The lady said Beijing food and recommended xiao lung bao and some lamb dish stir fried with onions and peppers. Didn’t catch the name on the later but it kind of tasted like Mongolian bbq. Both dishes were really delicious and hit the spot. The lady I dealt with was really nice and helpful. This experience made me happy cause it was Saturday night and places like Mama’s Lu were ridiculously jam packed. This place was not packed and the food totally satisfied the craving.

This place is out of the way, but they must have something good going on, because they had a bus full of Chinese tourists pull up for dinner! Stopped here for a quick dinner and had no clue what to order so we ordered almost the whole menu(that’s just how we roll). Green onion pancake, shao long bao, and the spicy beef intestines were the best thing there. Pancakes were crispy and not greasy, buns were super juicy inside with great flavor, and the intestines were bomb! They were super tender and the peppers had a nice smoky flavor. We also ordered the lamb hotpot, but it was pretty bland… same for the lamb noodle, grilled beef and kung pao chicken. Service was pretty awesome with the server, chef and fellow customers helping us out. If I was in the area, I would come here again for some buns, intestines and friendly company. *noms!*

Visited for: Lunch This is definitely a gem located in… yes another plaza. Very popular for takeout as well as frozen foods and fresh meat. Don’t get me wrong, this is first and foremost a great restaurant(in the sense of the food, not the décor or anything else). Positives: 1. Lunch prices are very reasonable and portions are more than decent. 2. Steamed or pan-fried buns are very popular here($ 6 for 8 of them). 3. Twice cooked pork is delicious and always my favorite here. 4. If you love lamb, they have a whole load of dishes filled with that stuff. They also sell the meat itself and theirs is always much more fresh than your typical supermarket for some reason. 5. English menu is available for those afraid of the language barrier issue Negatives: 1. Limited seating(but it never really gets too packed). 2. Hit or miss on what is available on the menu. Don’t find out til I get there and they tell me. 3. Tea sucks, just some typical bulk purchased tea at a local restaurant emporium. 4. Décor is typical ol school non-fancy table and seating. Don’t expect anything five stars, except for the food and price. Hopefully the above gives you a good idea of what you’d be getting into. Don’t get your hopes entirely high. You have to give and take on Chinese restaurants. Tastes like good ol’ home cooking to me and that’s what I’m always looking for.

I found out about this place from LA Times. It got a great review for its Chinese bacon with garlic stems and one other dish I couldn’t remember. I went there for kung pao chicken and chinese bacon and LA times was right. The price for lunch was reasonable too. $ 4 – 5 can buy you lunch special. I went back there few times and the food was not as good but it was still good. Recently I went with 3 other companions here and it was a disappointment for me. The food was not as good as before and the service was unbelievably rude. I never had problem with non English speaking establishments but don’t force me to speak Chinese. The lady who took my order kept talking to me in Chinese. I kinda understood what she was saying and tried my best to communicate back to her using English, sign language and Chinese 101. She got mad at me because I wouldn’t speak Chinese to her. My Chinese is pretty bad, I only speak the basic. She was friendlier to the other tables, especially the table next to me because the guy was hitting on her(in Chinese of course). Ordered: kung pao chicken, scallion pancake, sauteed string beans and chinese bacon with garlic stems. Kung Pao Chicken: not as good as the first time. 3 stars. Scallion Pancake: not that good. 2 stars. Sauteed String Beans: crunchy and sweet. 3.5 stars. Chinese Bacon with Garlic Stems: too salty 3 stars. Not sure I would go back there if the lady still worked there. Deerfield Garden is not as yummylicious as before!
