Why anyone would give this place 4 or 5 stars is beyond me. It a little dive with a very limited menu and way overpriced for what they serve. All of their food is grocery store quality. The meats are straight out of a box of mystery meat patties from the freezer at the supermarket and the breads are right out of the standard grocery store bag of 12 rolls. Me and my wife spent $ 25 for one drink(no refills) one small fries and a backyard BBQ quality burger and chicken patty sandwich. The other reviews make it sound like it is some kind of restaurant. It’s a counter order place and your food comes out on a cafeteria tray. And it’s cash only. It was clean and the food wasn’t bad or anything, but 25 bucks for this food in this kind of place is a disgusting ripoff. These kinds of places are ruining Montauk as a destination for anyone. Will not return.

To preface, this was merely a fried-chicken taste test against Herb’s. My family and I have been coming to Montauk for many, many years and we’ve always passed by the Munch Box and wondered if their fried chicken was anything on par with the near-perfection of Herb’s. Finally, this summer we managed to pop in and buy a box of legs and thighs(they were out of wings) after picking up our order of Herb’s, and we put them head-to-head. As standalone chicken, definitely not bad– a bit on the excessively greasy side, but that’s to be expected. Not nearly as salty as Herb’s, and much less seasoned– seeming almost bland in comparison. It was a bit pricier than I initially expected for the small box of less than 10 parts we bought, and ultimately it couldn’t even come close to the crispiness and flavor of Herb’s fried chicken. I’ll have to sample some more stuff, but the service was good, so as of now Munch Box remains pretty much average on my radar. For fried chicken– Herb’s all the way. More to come!

I’ve been going to Montauk for over 20 years and sadly it’s becoming like the Hamptons, a tourist trap littered with overpriced and places with dubious tasting food. Based on Unilocal reviews, I popped in over the weekend during my visit. I had a plain burger($ 6), fries($ 5) and a 64 oz bottle of Pepsi($ 5). I wouldn’t have objected to the prices if the quality/quantity of the food justified the prices. The small hamburger was ok, your typical mass-produced factory burger on a mass produced bun. The French fries tasted good, but nothing distinctive and they were probably mass produced somewhere else as well. The kicker with the french fries is that for $ 5, I would have expected more than the 15-count fries I received. How I wished for a McDonald’s nearby, because their new sirloin burger is very tasty and a combo meal w/drink would have only cost me about $ 9. The place looks rundown and could use a refurb. It was a very hot weekend, however the place was not air conditioned and made for uncomfortable eating. It’s unfortunate that one of my favorite places on LI is starting to lose its charm…

The service was friendly but a bit inattentive the food just lacked any flavor. I ordered the chicken gyro with fries and cole slaw. Fries were ok. The cole slaw tastes too vinegary and the gyro was just horrible. The Taziki sauce was very bland it tastes like just plain Greek yogurt. And the chicken gyro meat was rather dry.

Awesome place to grab a quick bite. The chicken burger and burgers are fantastic and the mini tacos rule. The fried chicken is second to none. Don’t go in there if your on a diet because everything is fried but it’s worth it.

Awesome fish and chips. The fries were a little lacking, but the second time I went they let me substitute for onion rings which were pretty good. However the star of the show was the fried flounder filet. It was fresh, crisp, and had everything else one could want in a comfort food.

Fried chicken is pretty good. Not much else to speak of on the menu. Good if you’re craving it and don’t want to have to drive all the way back to the city before quenching those desires.

I come to this place every year and I love it! It has the best fried chicken around! I highly recommend it!

Love the mini tacos from this place. They are fantastic. I am also a big fan of their chicken gyros and fried scallops. The people who work there are really great as well.

Fantastic fried chicken. Crispy outer coating covers moist, juicy chicken. Both white and dark meats are fantastic. Fast service, our food was on the counter within a minute or two of paying. Low frills — few tables, couple chairs, cash only. Lots of other offerings — burgers, seafood, etc. — but we focused on the outstanding fried chicken.

So, I have a confession to make that will make a lot of people who eat meat cringe. I effing HATE fried chicken. Which, apparently, is the only thing they get right here. The salad was overchopped without being a chopped salad. My burger was shaped like a doughnut(I wanted that missing piece, thanks very much and wtf), overcooked to near inedibility(even for people who like a well done burger), lacking flavor, crumbling, thin, disgusting. Fries were crisp and perfectly cooked but lacking flavor.(I had to COVER them with salt.) Biscuits weren’t biscuits at all. Cheap, and everyone else LOVED their fried chicken, so skip everything else and head straight for that if you eat here.

OK, so we’re in Montauk, and need a place to eat some lunch. Not being the fancy type, the fam decides to get takeout from a whole in the wall fast food joint, and let me tell ya, it was phenomenal. We got fried chicken, which was just the right amount of crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The pieces were large and full of delicious flavor. The frnch fries were standard, nothing special, but nice and crispy as well. The only complain I have is with the burgers, which i didnt eat, but my fiancé did and she said it was no good. Overall though, an excellent, cheap lunch.
