Star India is closed and has changed hands. Indian food is still served here along with Fijian cuisine. Ligit Fijian fare… give it a try. :-)

I loved this place. They’re closed now :( Edit: I got the scoop from the owners — they’re looking for a new building in Modesto currently and will re-open once they do.

Very good lots of flavor but they have been failing to make our food spicy when asked… Hopefully next time it’ll be a little more spicy

Good food and great prices. The service is friendly too. The only downside is this place is in a terrible location. It looks like a «hole in the wall» restaurant and it’s not on the greatest side of town, but the place is still worth going too.

I ordered one order of kofta, medium, to go with two orders of rice and two mango lassi. Unfortunately, the food was mild instead of medium so I called up the restaurant to see if I could get it replaced. The lady was really nice and re-made my order no questions asked. I went back about 5 minutes later to find my new order ready to go. This time it was perfect! I definitely recommend this restaurant for their customer service and great authentic Indian food!

I had aloo tikki chat. The tikkis were so stale. It was hard to eat. They don’t know how to nake a chat or keep a good quality food restaurant. The buffet is also down the line.

Modesto suffers from a serious lack of good indian places to eat. Unfortunately star India remains one of the few places to go for Indian food locally. Buffet is generic, flavorless. overcooked. A bad introduction to Indian food for newbies. Worthwhile to drive to the bay area for better choices and much better food. Someday hopefully there will be an Indian food place worth going to locally. Till then, I would not waste my time or money at this place.

Very good home made Indian food. I have been here many times and never been disappointed. They have lunch buffet and dinner menu as well. Both are good.

This restaurant was phenomenal! The ambience was very simple and the service was on point. The food came out pretty quick so you’re not waiting a ridiculous amount of time. Indian food is one of my favorite ethnic cuisines and this restaurant nailed it hardcore. Needless to say I was in heaven. With hole in the wall places being considered, this truly is an amazing find.

I have grown to really love this place. Only reason why I won’t give them a 5 star is due to the lack of ambiance when dining in(so I often do take out). Other than that — the place is slammin! I always get Mango Lassi(must try it if you have not) garlic nan, simosas, veggie korma(med spicy) with rice. They also make fresh indian pastries! I really love the food here, and also the price. Very affordable. Can’t beat that! :)

Dear Modesto, Please open a few more Indian restaurants. In the mean time, this one is pretty good. No free Chai while you wait but that’s just being picky I guess! The food is good, not the best ive ever had but good price and not a lot of Indian options near by!

This is my favorite place in Modesto. The buffet is delicious and is best if you go when they start it(around 11 am I think). The naan is wonderful and is made fresh each time you order. Love the butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. My dad is a vegetarian and loved a lot of the buffet items as well. The customer service is not the best but the food is well worth it and the cook(owner?) is very welcoming and helpful. The area is a little sketchy though so beware.

The best place around. Sometimes the food is skimpy portioned, other times it’s very generous. Its kind of a hit or miss. But the food always tastes amazing. We’ve tried just about everything on the menu. Always get naan. Butter or plain. The samosas are a meal all unto themselves and are perfect every time. Call ahead and get it to go. The food is packaged perfectly and is hot up to 45 mins later.

Eh, it wasn’t nearly as good as all the reviews say. I love Indian food, I really wanted to love the food here. The only good thing is the price for the buffet. $ 7.99. Only ate the vegetarian options. Our favorite dish, veggie korma was available. But it was so salty, over cooked, and not very good quality. The other dishes were the same as well. Meal came with free nan which was decent. Service was good. But I was so so disappointed in the quality of the food. :(. Just thought of another good thing… I usually over eat at Indian restaurants, but this time I left still hungry, less calories for me today. My husband said that it was way better the week before. Hopefully I just went on an off day. I won’t be going back to find out though. :(

The first time I went to Star India I arrived 52 minutes before their posted closing time. I was initially told that they were closed. Then after I discussed the fact that they had a posted closing time that was almost an hour later, I was told that they only were serving«to-go» orders. Eventually they let me eat in the restaurant. Despite the complete lack of customer service I attempted to order takeout a second time because the food was decent. I called 36 minutes before their posted closing time to order takeout. I was told that they were closed and no longer accepting orders. I would really like to know what is wrong with these people. It seems to me that if they don’t want to stay open to their posted closing time it should be as easy as changing their hours. I will not reward their arrogant rudeness with my business.

This restaurant may not look like much on the outside, but step inside and you’ll be pleasantly surprised! They’ve renovated it in the past few months, moving the grocery store next door and upping the ambience of their little restaurant. It’s intimate and clean. The food is reasonably priced and very flavorful. There is a lot of variety in the menu, with plentiful options for both vegetarians and carnivores. Their lunch buffet is a great deal — about $ 7 for standard fare, like naan, butter chicken, pakora, etc. The meat can be lacking at times, a bit on the dry side and not too fresh. They also could work on replenishing the buffet more often and keeping the food warmer — sometimes they run out of certain items and don’t replenish it. Perhaps they were unaware it ran out, so if this happens, I would kindly notify them and I’m sure they would be happy to refill it. This happened to us a couple times, so hopefully if they read this review, it will help them be aware of this! The koftas are flavorful, but the texture was softer than we liked. It could use a firmer consistency, but the sauce it swam in was divinely creamy. I would highly recommend the onion kulcha! It’s a chewy flatbread flavored with tons of sweet onions and some black pepper. If you love bold flavors and caramelized onions, this is perfect. However, it can be overly salty, so ask them to make it with less salt unless you are a fan of high blood pressure. The dessert selection is pleasant, usually stays the same. Generally, they are all very sweet, and some of them also milky and rich. A bit pricey, but since they are all so rich and sweet, a little goes a long way! Overall, it’s a small and intimate place to share a meal with a friend(relatively inexpensive if you share the tab), flavorful food(they come in small bowls which are great for tasting many dishes and sharing with others), and the family who runs the restaurant seems very nice — they’re constantly trying to upgrade and improve their restaurant, which is admirable.

Came here to see if the food had improved, hoping that Star India was just having a bad day when we were here last, or that our impressions were all wrong. We were told that after 7PM, only take-out orders. What? No dining in the restaurant at or after 7PM. The restaurant was completely empty. I can’t believe it! Something very strange has happened here and I don’t know how to account for it. 1. The food is bad, served cool or cold, some of it seeming to be dried out; we asked for very spicy and what came didn’t even taste of curry; 2. The normally busy take-out business, on two of my visits here, has evaporated and seemingly gone elsewhere; and 3. On the busiest night of the week, my companion and I were the only patrons in the restaurant in a 2 ½ hour period(and not a single person came to pick up take-out). In this case, three strikes and you’re out! Not coming back unless I hear that there has been a change of management and somebody got religion(epicurean epiphany, to say the least!).

Its pretty good, went for the lunch buffet and could of stuffed myself with butter chicken and rice. In a sketchy place. The restaurant its self is clean. Getting to the buffet was a bit awkward getting to buffet since it is against the wall. But anyway so worth the $ 7.52(with tax) for my 2 plates of food and 2 pieces of naan.
