The volunteers are very nice, and the store is clean and very well organized with inviting displays. It’s a pleasant atmosphere. The prices, however, are way too high. I don’t like it when any charity expects you to pay more just because it’s a charity. Yes, I realize you’re raising money for cancer research, but you are still a thrift store selling secondhand merchandise, and you get all your inventory for free. I give money to charities of my choice; I shop in thrift stores to get a bargain. You also are competing with other sellers of used items — including art and antiques — and need to keep that in mind. Some vintage items, glassware for example, are astoundingly overpriced, i.e. $ 20 for a glass sugar and creamer set. Just because something is old does not mean it is a rarity worthy of «Antiques Roadshow.» Some of the clothing is ridiculously priced as well, such as scarves. I am not going to pay $ 8 for a used scarf. It’s a mistake for any secondhand establishment not to price inventory to move. Don’t let things hang around forever — price low and keep turnover high. Also, volunteers need to not be snooty. Most of the volunteers here are very courteous and helpful. Once, though, I brought in a big armload of donations, and it took a while for anyone to even acknowledge me. Then the woman looked down her nose at me and said, «What is it?» I felt as if she thought I looked like my belongings were unworthy of the store. She rather reluctantly accepted my items, but I thought she was going to turn me away. These experiences have not stopped me from going to this store once in a while, but I shop at other thrift stores far more frequently.

First the ladies that run this charity thrift shop are really nice and the store is spotless and clean. But all of the furniture and almost everything is way over-priced! I feel some stuff was close to retailers. I much rather look for good buys not for me.:-(

Store is all about nice items and name brands and you’re going to pay a bit more for them. I bought a shirt for $ 9 from the store that I could have got somewhere else for $ 3. It’s fun to go in there every now and then and less high end clothing is really important to you then this is your store.

My mother and I frequently shop at this thrift shop. I find excellent buys and they have a very good selection of items for their size shop. Their volunteers are also one of the friendliest ladies. We attended their annual jewelry sale and again found some extremely great buys. I shop at other thrift shops both here and in the Central Coast. This Discovery Shop is the best. This is my preferred location for donating my higher quality items. Thank you Discovery Shop!

Quality goods at reasonable prices. The volunteer ladies where very friendly and in themselves a treat for those visiting Modesto. Not a large store.

This is a great little thrift store, particularly for gently used women’s fashions. I have found designer items to be very inexpensive. I recently purchased an Oscar de la Renta sweater set, unworn, for only $ 15. The store is small, you might only find one or two items per shopping experience, but it is well worth a monthly visit. I only gave it 4 stars because the men’s section could use some developing.

Every time I go into this thrift store, «Bob» is very rude! I have tried on several occasions to buy furniture in the store. When I ask a sales person how much something is they tell me to ask«Bob». I have tried to ask«Bob» and he will start walking away from you like he is too busy to take my business. I got really tired of waiting for him to show me any customer service and I left because he was too busy to sell anything in the store. The store is in a good location and it has great inventory but«Bob» brings the whole store down. I did get 1 response from a person that said there is no «Bob» at this store. I was told his name was«Bob», so if you are just trying to tear my review down because you work there or are related in some way to the store, please leave my review alone. Let the reviews on Unilocal stay honest and dont bug people over speaking the truth!!!

Modesto’s American Cancer Society Discovery Shop is a cute little well run higher end thrift store which benefits the society. The volunteers who work here are wonderful people, many of which are Cancer survivors or have had relatives with Cancer.
They generally have a little of everything and the selection changes all the time. I have found and bought nice furniture and even local semi-collectable fine art for next to nothing(a $ 20 painting could be appraised for $ 400). You never know what you may find next!
I have in turn donated many items to this shop and so can you. The Discovery Shop is nearby the Marshalls and the Wells Fargo Bank on McHenry Ave.
