My mate likes Starbucks drip. I find it bitter and pretty awful. I had this realization while brunching at Lowbrow that every time a restaurant has poured me Peace at brunch, my hangover is cured, my mood is light, and my world is a better place at the first sip. And it’s never bitter. It’s always nutty. Now, I’ll admit it’s not the best coffee on the planet, but it’s four stars bumped to five for making ethical business decisions even on a small scale where the bottom line is much more felt than if you’re a soulless Titan.

I hate to review Peace Coffee so low, but unfortunately their coffee isn’t all that great, and worse, it’s inconsistent. The idea behind Peace is very appealing: they only roast the most ethically grown/sold coffee one can get and they even deliver it by bicycle! Sadly, the product does not live up to the hype. Peace coffee is a subsidiary of the Institute for Agriculture Trade Policy, so their focus seems to be in ethical farming and buying, and not quality beans and coffee. It’s still better than most grocery store coffee, but it’s not«great» coffee by any means.

Oh boy… I hope I don’t get hate mail for this but Peace Coffee is boring… no, no… horrible. It’s horrible. I was excited to hear about them because the Milwaukee area has a great local roastery(Alterra). Assuming Peace must be as good as Alterra I promptly went out and bought 3 – 4 different kinds of coffee and just barely liked one of them(Snowshoe). Not sure if it was actually acceptable taste-wise or if I felt buyers remorse and tried to justify my purchase by convincing myself one of their roasts made drinkable coffee. They were all insipid and reminded me of the truck stop joe that all tastes the same and you get sick of drinking when you’re on a road trip. Besides the quality(and this is why they get 2 stars instead of 1) is the fact that they are eco and socially conscious… but then again so is Starbucks and even they have better coffee than Peace.

Who doesn’t love some eco and socially conscious caffeine delivered by bike? This company does great community outreach, supports local organizations, and makes my kitchen smell amazing every morning. I recently had the opportunity to stop by the main office, meet a few people, and checkout some cool Peace Coffee merchandise… really made me love the organization even more and initiated daydreaming of working on a coffee farm.

Peace COFFEE! This is a morning staple. I make it in the French press but you can order it any way you like it(online) or purchase it(Wedge and a whole lot of other grocery stores/cafes). The actual Peace Coffee location is just where they roast, pack and distribute the fair-trade beans under good working conditions and an eco-friendly roof in Minneapolis. It’s delivered to various MPLS businesses by bicycle. You can score a freshly brewed cup at conscious cafes all around the city. This coffee is superior and it feels good to drink it.
