The space is open like the creativity and free spirited drive for artistic expression. Walk in and see the current exhibit– Creative Dissent at the moment. The exhibit was well curated and representative of the state of turmoil and unrest that had characterized the Arab Spring uprisings. The space allows for discussions, meetings and open dialogue about arts, social issues and affiliated progressive hopes and dreams. I enjoyed the intent and ideological foundations represented in the exhibit, which is firmly supported by this center for arts.

Right from the outside of the building, with dramatic murals that change every so often to the interior spaces that showcase multiple exhibits/performances, this place is a must visit whether you’re a local or a tourist. I was here most recently for a celebration of the Iranian New Year in one of the smallish rooms. There were readings from various cultural traditions, live western classical music on the piano, and poetry. There was great food and tea afterwards with a middle eastern theme. The evening continued with a performance from Pangea — the Sufi Project — with music, poetry, storytelling, and movement. More food and wine followed afterward. The theater space seats about 120 people and provides for an intimate experience. So, drop in here and support local artists. They also have a private parking lot — a huge plus in the Uptown area.

We held our wedding here last year, ceremony and reception– it is an amazing venue! Super affordable and you can arrange your own catering and wine services. The staff is WONDERFUL and super lovely to work with. Plenty of room to dance, eat and be merry. Also, since it’s a gallery decorating is pretty much handled and the money you spend goes to keeping this great community asset going(as opposed to throwing money at a big hotel or event center).

Hands down, the most beautiful building in all of Minneapolis. Art really does change everything, doesn’t it? On the outside, the graffiti murals can catch anyone’s attention whether he or she is walking, biking, or driving down Lyndale Avenue. To keep if fresh, Intermedia Arts has artists every several months or so come there to put up new work. I love the wall along the parking lot as well. Super dupa fly. I have sad flash backs to the awesome B-Girl Be events there. On the inside, there’s a free art exhibit for the public to see. Every time I’ve gone, it’s something different. Whether there were sculptures, paintings, or photographs, Intermedia Arts always trys to promote and support local artists on the building’s walls and floors. Intermedia Arts also promotes and supports those in theater too! Throughout the year, there are so many different kinds of shows going on that showcase social justice in an artistic way. I have to give a shotout to my homies Arturo, Ozzy, Charlie, Annie, Chevell and all the other folks holding it down with hip-hop showcase«The Joint Project». Always amazing, and super affordable for all types of people. I love Intermedia Arts. They are improving Minneapolis, in a very innovative, fun, and inspiring way.

The catalyst series highlights great art and performance of the cities; and I got to be apart of it. Intermedia arts is exactly as it name implies. They not only showcase fantastic emerging artists in the cities, but they also offer scholarships and grants to people and programs that want to showcase at their center. They have a cute art gallery that changes constantly — about as often as the décor on their building. If most of you have been around for hip-hop in the cities, this place highlighted the B-Boy and B-Girl seen before it took off. Home to the B-Girl B Festival and thier annual catalyst series, this place is not to be beat. Tickets for shows are relatively cheap — anywhere under $ 20 and if you just want to attend the gallery or a smaller show, they request a suggested donation of $ 2 or more. Not bad for some arts in the city. Check it out, and check them out online for emerging artists that are moving and shaking.

Great little gallery and community arts arena! Every time I happen upon this place, I am pleasantly impressed with the exhibit at the time. They have 2 small-ish rooms and a large entryway that they use to show themed exhibits from local and national artists. I caught the opening to a show dealing with immigration and families that was very poignant and at only $ 2 suggested donation, a real steal when it comes to a night at the gallery. They even fed us! What’s more, they have a theater(never been) and a computer lab for a wide variety of arts involvement. I came here for an open source workshop by Ken Nelson and a co-worker of mine and learned a TON about the movement and also about Intermedia’s national involvement in such an important technological frontier. If you’ve ever driven by on Lyndale Ave and wondered about how the exterior gets re-painted so often and in such wildly different ways(annual B-Girl Be festival), stop in and see that the inside is just as, if not more, exciting.

Once upon a time, I had a piece in the Youth Film Screening show that was organized by Intermedia. I went there and learned all about film and video production. It was a pretty fantastic experience to learn things and then up them into practice in the production of a work then showed to many people. They do many other things there, like being involved in art cars for instance, and a variety of other things. You would be doing yourself a favor by dropping by or checking out their website.
