Brownies, Cookies and Rice Crispies made fresh — delicious. I didn’t try the sandwiches here but they looked good too

I like this place – I lunch here 3 – 4 times a week. But it would be really nice if the breakfast staff could get the orders straight. When I ask for a breakfast sandwich with cheddar and ¼ of the egg they normally serve, It shouldn’t have to be made twice for them to get it straight.

I’ve been to this location two times at 11am. Each time I’ve looked at their soup and it appears to be crusty edged like it was left cooking since last night /yesterday /last week. I don’t know if they just keep a pot cooking or if it goes into the cooler at night, or what, but it looks really bad and not fresh at all. I think they probably cool it and fridge it at night and pop it back on the line, repeat. Pretty bad looking stuff, maybe dangerous. Ordered a heirloom roast beef. Asked for mustard, the line cook had 3 kinds in front of her. She told me to get a packet from the front by the register. What the hell? The roast beef was 4 thin gray slices with some really low quality tomatoes. Add a side bag Sysco carrots and I was on my way. I don’t mind a skinny sandwich if it’s quality and good, but this one was pretty lame in flavor and appeal. It was 2 inches thick if that, not much for $ 8. Another line cook was sweeping and cleaning with his gloves on, then making sandwiches. Yum. I guess the protection is made for his hands not the customer’s food. 2 times is enough to let me realize this place is missing what it promises: quality. This is one deli to avoid in my opinion.

D. Brian’s(all of them, but I’ll use the singular for ease of comprehension) is easily the best quick deli sandwich joint in all of the Twin Cities. Some notes: 1. When it’s your turn, BEREADYTOORDER. I would think this would go without saying, but it apparently doesn’t. What I love about this place is, if you fumble-stumble-ummmm your way through your order, both the counter help and the customers will drag you out into the SkyWay™ and stab you to death. There’s a reason it only takes 2 minutes to get a sandwich here: efficiency. I even learned to order in the way that would help the counter jockey move faster. Watch: «I’ll take a whole 9-grain [now, he can grab the bread] salami, with mayo, stone-ground mustard, cheddar, sprouts [try it sometime], lettuce, and cucumbers.» 2. Prices are very reasonable. $ 7 will get you everything you need for a good lunch. 3. The hot sandwiches are awesome! Remember: you order them from a different locale, so don’t wait in line at the cold-sandwich counter. 4. If you don’t pay in cash, the other customers have the right to beat you with their briefcases. It’s just a sandwich, not a plasma TV. If you don’t have $ 7 in your wallet, at least have the decency to look ashamed when you hand over your credit card. 5. The soups are AWESOME. The beer cheese is to DIEFOR. Literally. It will kill you. I think a 6 ounce serving of beer cheese soup here somehow contains more than 6 ounces of cheese. Crumble in some Saltines and liberally spice with Tabasco sauce.
