My daughter’s wedding was at Calhoun Beach Club. D’Amico’s food was very good: our guests raved about it. The spaces, solarium and boulevard, are lovely. The solarium, unfortunately, has severe acoustical problems. At our recent reception, guests over 45 or 50 sitting just about anywhere in the room, but particularly in the back half, could not understand the speeches and toasts. The acoustics issues are not acknowledged by venue management, but I am offering suggestions here for those who are planning a CBC wedding reception. 1. Try to seat guests over 50 as close as possible to the people speaking. Seat younger people farther away, as they will have fewer sound issues. 2. Have people speak from the middle of the room, perhaps along the far wall, rather than from one end. 3. Encourage people speaking to talk extremely slowly and loudly, with a volunteer over 50 stationed at the farthest part of the room to continually monitor whether speeches are not just heard, but understood. 4. Video-record speeches so that those who can’t understand them at the time of the event will have another chance. 5. Place speakers in all corners of the room and upgrade microphone.
