The lady who works there is EXTREMELY rude! I called and asked about soup flavors(because it wasn’t up on their website) and if the Cudahy restaurant had the same soup(Because I wasn’t too fond of the one they had) and she said to me «Okay, I have 40 people looking at me right now, go down to Cudahy, they’re open!» and hung up on me!!! I will NEVER go to that Uncanny Soup Co. ever again! I seriously just sat there for a moment, like did that just happen? Are people really that RUDE? What a horrible way to run a business! I love their soups, but I will ONLY go to the Cudahy one from now on! Will NEVER go back to the downtown! Life is way to short to have to deal with people like that!

The staff at Uncanny Soup is pretty awesome, the soup tastes great, the atmosphere/location is cozy, and their prices are reasonable. I’m just warm thinking about the combination of it all. I am a downtown luncher and a recent pescatarian gone vegan. This place has always served my palette, and I now know that they have a vegan option once a week. I didn’t fully appreciate this place until I tried my hand at the Soup House since they have vegan options everyday – they were certainly pricier and not as friendly. Keep it up Uncanny; when mama does spend her money she enjoys the proceeds going toward good food and happy people. Props.

Final Update. After some reflection uncanny is back on top. Their daily specials continue to hit the sweet spot. Just for fun I went three days in a row and tried the daily special each day and was pleasantly surprised each outing. For me the price is right. $ 5 for a 16oz. They accept credit card which is key. I am not a huge fan of carrying cash on me. Plus they double punch your card on Wednesday. It’s a small thing but that aids my budget and i appreciate that. Customer service here is great. Employees are always friendly and make the experience personable. I’ve been indecisive before and they’ve offered me a sample while I think about it. That goes a long way in my book. The daily soups are good but the standout soups are the specials. The chicken pot pie, cheesy enchilada especially stand out to me. The variety is wide and there is something for everyone. Alligator Gumbo with Ghost Chili? Check. They are consistent, friendly and delicious and have earned my repeat patronage. I want to point out that the walk I take consumes most of my lunch time and I always get it to go but I trek to uncanny happily knowing that I will be better off after I consume one of these treats. Because of the better quality, Credit card friendly and plain ol easier on the wallet Uncanny ranks as Milwaukee’s go to soup option. Seating is limited and parking is whatever you can find if you are driving here. They offer sandwiches for $ 6, vegetarian and gluten free options as well.

I aint from around here(THEOC, CAREPRESNT!) and I asked my long distance bf where can I get some amazing, thick stewy soup. He took me here. It’s one of his go-to’s before he begins his workday. You see, where I’m from, its so damn hot all the time that soup places are rare to non-existant. ANDIMALWAYSCRAVINGSOUP/STEW EVENINTHEMIDDLEOFSUMMER. Homeboy always picture texts me awesome pics of the soups he gets and its not fair. Oh well, at least I can picture text him all the amazing Mexican food I eat. Point being for all you MKE peeps, BEGRATEFULYOUGOTTAPLACELIKETHIS! Because while I’m sweating like a pig eating some great Mexican food, I REALLY wish I could be eating some amazing concoctions of soups. Luckies.

If Uncanny Soup was the only game in town, I’d be writing a rave review here instead of nitpicking. Uncanny soup is a quaint place has a lot of diehard support from the lakefront lunch hour set. Finding the place is something of a challenge. If you go the address advertised, a pair of stone-faced security types bark you around the corner as soon as you set foot in the entrance. Instead go to the side door, the address is roughly 717 N Van Buren St. It’s a classy old granite art deco building, but you’d never think a soup counter was there behind all the tinted glass and bronze. I’ve found the quality here to be mixed. Their chicken & sausage gumbo was very very good. And I’m looking to try out the jerk chicken ever since spring sprung and they warmed up the smoker. However the one time I ordered the chowder I discovered it was leftovers from Friday. I also have a couple minor quibbles with the excessive styrofoam packaging, bland hunks of bread, and near-total lack of seating. But this is a lunch joint after all, not a resort. What keeps me away is the competition: the inimitable Soup House is just four blocks away! Barring some as-yet-untried menu gem, I can’t imagine going to here over Soup House. Soup House is bright, roomy, and puts amazing ingredients and love into all their soups. So try the gumbo here if you’re in the area, but hike a few extra blocks for a real meal.

Real Food from Scratch! If your hungry and want a great lunch at an amazing price then this is where you need to be! So many choices! Gluten Free, Vegetarian and many choices for the serious carnivore. They have the boring standards ie; Baked Potato Soup, Chicken Veg etc… But the real fun is in the Thai Peanut or Tandoori Chicken. The Sandwiches are fantastic and messy and they will even do a «Red» or «Dip» like in Chicago! Growing up on the South Side of Milwaukee, all I had was Paste and Pepper to eat. This has awakened me to a whole new world of Flavors! The staff is really nice and helpful. A whole lunch downtown of all places for $ 6.00! Amazing!

Went to the Cudahy location many times when I worked on that side of town. I’m a huge fan of their potato soup and though we work near Prospect and North, we go out of our way to go here to get lunch when we’re craving soup. One of the things I’ve always loved about Soup Ladle/Uncanny is the fresh hunk of bread that comes alongside my order. I used to order and extra piece and revel in a buttered up piece of carb-y goodness. But the last two times I’ve ordered, my bread has been awful. Bad enough that I’m starting to wonder if I should continue to go out of my way to go here. The bread really took this experience over the top for me and without it, I’m just kind of sad and unfulfilled. I do love that Uncanny has so many options for soup. You don’t find a lot of other Jambalaya’s or Crawfish and Crab Chowder’s in the Milwaukee area. I like that you can get dumplings or noodles in your chicken soup. To say I’m disappointed here would be an understatement. This really was one of those places I’d go to to treat myself to warm, filling soup and I’m on the lookout for somewhere to take their place now.

I really like this place. Most of the soups are great, and the service is awesome. Not a fan of the potato soup(no flavor) or any of the sandwiches(bread get’s soggy really fast). It’s a good value, especially for the big-eater.

I was invited out to lunch with some co-workers for a grab and go lunch recently and the destination was The Uncanny Soup. They’re located inside the gaslight building. It is a small cute soup and sandwich shop popular with the office crowd at the USBank building and NWM that offers up a special sandwich of the day for $ 5(examples include rosemary pork and meatball) and a plethora of soup options in different sizes(daily specials, baked potato, 13 Spice Jambalaya, chicken veggie, chicken w/wild rice – plus many many more). The menu changes daily so expect a few surprises. Service has always been very friendly and first rate. As for the food, its a great value and is typically very good. I mean $ 5 for a heaping load of pork on a sandwich is pretty tough to beat downtown! Bottom line is that I will return.
