I like Andrew bc he is friendly and helpful to everyone. He’s also never too busy to answer a question. I also like the variety of cardio equipment. I’m trying to trim some of my middle so I need several ways to get my heart rate up. I also like the core training equipment bc when I broke my ankle, it was very helpful to do rehab with the bogus(?) ball and the foam platforms. I think that the African American woman who works in the afternoon provides terrible customer service. She is always on her phone and she ignores me when I need something. When my friend signed up she didn’t even get off her phone to write up his his contract. I can only imagine how many mistakes were made.

«Getting fit is a Snap!» Bull shit I say. It is hard work. It takes time. It is often very boring, sweaty, and painful. I live about 100 yards from this place and have largely ignored it since it opened about five years ago. At my last birthday(#42), I realized that t was time to get off my ever-growing ass and get back in shape. I challenged myself to lose 50 pounds by my next birthday, although I really hope it doesn’t take that long. That’s where Snap Fitness comes into the picture. My Frau had recently joined the WAC and loves it to the point of trying to recruit me as well. Although I’m sure their two pools, multiple aerobics studios, spa-like locker rooms, and über-buff personal trainers are great, I would never use them. I’m not excited to take yoga or Zumba classes, I don’t «swim well,» nor do I want some sweaty meat head screaming at me «Push it Bro!, you gotta want this.» All I want is an elliptical, a bike, a treadmill, and weight machines. Wouldn’t you know it, but that’s exactly what Snap has. They also have free weights, tanning booths(although I think you pay extra), some weird core training benches that I don’t understand, as well as some highly complicated weight machines that I don’t know how to use. Apparently I am not alone. There are three machines here I’ve never seen in use. Other things you should know: 1. There is a bottled water vending machine, but no bubblers(water fountains for those non-Milwaukee natives.) 2. The bathrooms are large enough to change in, but there are no «locker rooms» per se. 3. Most of the cardio equipment has it’s own TV. Just bring your ear buds. 4. There is nowhere to lock your stuff up, but their are cubby holes to store your stuff, and they are in plain sight. OK, there is nothing fancy about Snap Fitness in general, or this location specifically. I find it is what I am looking for, and I think it is a good value. I probably wouldn’t drive across town to come here, but because it is so close to my house, I just can’t say no. My biggest gripe is that I am forced to stare across the street while I’m on the elliptical at all those lucky bastards filing in and out of North Avenue Grill. It upsets me that I probably shouldn’t eat there(Jesus H. Christ, that man knows how to cook), but once I meet my goal, I can again. The very first thing you notice when walking out of the gym is the delicious smell wafting across the street, pulling you in. I got a long way to go, but I think this gym might just get me there. Especially if I ease off the beer and stay away from the awesome, seductive, and amazing restaurants along this stretch of North Ave.

Yes it’s small. But I go later and I’m usually one of 3 or 4 people in the place so that doesn’t really matter to me. Yes it’s a chain. But tell me a nice family owned gym that is open 24⁄7. Yes equipment sits a while with the ‘temporarily out of service’ sign. See sentence #2. Also it’s 5 minutes from my house so I’ll be there for a long time.

Solid for what it is. Yes, sometimes I miss having the opportunity to attend a class, but for a simple workout(treadmill, bike, elliptical and weight machines) and nice technology(each machine has it’s own attached TV with full cable), this spot is nice. The staff I’ve dealt with here are always very nice. Didn’t get any pressure when I put my membership on hold for the summer, just nicely helped me out. They’ll always answer your questions and try to help out. Yes, some things have gone unattended for spells at a time(an unbalanced machine, a squeaky treadmill, a testy vending machine), but they do seem to try to get stuff fixed, and besides, 90−95% of stuff is working at all times. It’s a snug little spot, just four treadmills, four elliptical, a couple of bikes and a fairly extensive weight room. Small stretching area, with large bathrooms and tanning booth in the back. Always seems clean and I feel secure here with the key card entry and video monitoring. And it’s nice that they work with area trainers to offer personal training. Something that works well in this space.
