Never been to a Kite Store, so I’m not exactly sure what to expect. The shop had a huge selection of(expensive) huge kites and a small selection of(not as expensive, but still expensive) tiny kites. We were heading to the lake to fly kites and watch the firework show on July 3rd. We were told IF we buy a kite from Gift of Wings AND take said kites to the park to fly them that we would get into a section of the park that was marked off for KITE Flyers ONLY. So my friends and I bought a few kites, packed up the car with all the needed supplies to spend the entire day at the lake and headed down to partake in flying kites and bbq’ing in the kite only section. Well… we were so duped… we had to have BIGGER kites and be a member of some kite club. so we were turned away and had to find a spot in the already crowded park to chill for the day… Seeing how every family of four will reserve a 50’x50’ space in the park, you could only imagine the problem we had to even find a 10×10 space. Luckily we found a space in the parking lot :) Anyway. lesson to learn. get to the park early to get your space and don’t fall for a kite flying section only. ;)

My friend’s husband used to work at Gift of Wings, which has the perfect location for kite flying on the lake. They both suggested that we come here today since the weather is so gorgeous. Anytime it is in the high 80s and 90s inland it is going to be about 10 – 20 degrees cooler and a bit windier on the shore. Sadly, the wind wasn’t on our side today. Around noon it only reached 15mph. If you have a hardcore kite then you are going to want something more like 50mph. But we were able to find a wide selection of other toys for our outing. We ended up with an Aerobie Sprinter for $ 13, which is like a soft, rubbery Frisbee without a center. It entertained us for the next two hours. You can find the kite store’s history online. They pretty much started as a shack and expanded then added on a grill and ice cream shoppe. The burgers and dogs smelled delicious. My friend and I opted for the superman ice cream in a waffle cone. If you’re looking for something to do on a hot day in Milwaukee for not a lot of money, the Gift of Wings Kite Store is one of the best options. I can’t wait to come back. Be sure to check the website for weather forecast and wind conditions.
