Conejitos is more like 3.5 stars. The food is decent, cheap, and served on paper plates. The margaritas are made from some weird mix, but you get a whole pitcher without ice so it’ll deliver a discounted buzz.

The appearance of this place says it all. It is super divey on the outside, and that is how it is on the inside as well. There are probably about 10 tables and then a center bar where you can eat and drink. The wait staff was fine, but not overly nice or interested in your dining experience. I cannot comment on the food because I didn’t order tacos, but we had margaritas there. The margaritas were fine, but then again nothing to write home about. I think the best part was that they were only like 3 or 4 dollars each. That being said, they do come in a smaller cup. If you are in the area and are into dive bars, check it out, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to come back.

This place is ala cart heaven. Environment is a little loud when busy but a decent atmosphere. Great prices. Taco combo plate was top notch.

The food here doesn’t really compare in quality to any of the dozen or more authentic family run Mexican restaurants, and really not even to the more expensive Mexican restaurants catering to the suburban Gringo clientele also in the area. But compared to any similar dive bar, the Mexican style bar food is great here, very cheap(under 5 $ an overflowing plate), and served very fast. You can’t get Mexican style tacos, only on flour tortillas with lettuce and tomato. Everything but the sloppy(though tasty) ribs comes on flimsy paper plates, you have to order salsa and chips separately. Watch out for the waiter returning with your food, they are literally slinging those lunches onto the table and some of their sauces stain. If you’re looking for fast, cheap Mexican lunch with a drink or three, this is your place. If you want a little classier ambiance, higher quality Mexican cuisine, more comfortable seating, you won’t have far to walk around here.

I was only going to send them a personal message to let them know how disappointed we were tonight. But there isn’t even the option to respond to the restaurant. I don’t want to be that person that goes on and on about everything. So I’ll just finish by saying that after going there(regularly) for 23 years I have NO plans to ever return :((We went to their neighbors(La Fuentes) and spent 60 $ on an awesome dinner & left the waitress 75 because she was above and beyond!!! Btw, they snubbed our gay friends so bad that I was truly embarrassed for Milwaukee!

Unbeatable food for the price. $ 3 for a marg, $ 4 for a plate of food, $ 2 for chips and salsa! Food is served on paper plates so don’t expect frills but do get ready for some legit enchiladas. Also, do yourself a flavor favor and get the tostadas as an app.

Went today for lunch and have NOT been there for a year or more. Have always liked the place and actually today it wasn’t all that bad. Since the owner died(Jose) A few years ago the place hasn’t been quite the same and I’ve stayed away. If you want to try something a bit different it won’t kill you to try. For those that have gone for the last 20 tears it’ll never quite be the same…

Get the beans and cheese with your chips. Margarita pitchers never have ice. Yum on all levels!

Classic Milwaukee Mexican. I think it’s fair to say you either hate Conejitos or your a big fan. I’m on the fan list. The paper plates, cheap food, and strong margaritas make this a great place.

Conejitos is fast, predictable, and good every time. I can’t say anything is mind blowing, but they do what they do, and they do it well. I usually get the chicken mole(dark meat), and it never disappoints. The patrons are a glorious cross-section of the city. Everyone together, enjoying good food at great prices.

I’ve been here twice, and I think she falls victim to hype. I personally don’t understand the draw to this place. The food is alright, the margaritas are alright, the staff is alright. Maybe it’s the location in relation to drunk people? It’s kind of loud, the menu has Engrish, but it’s cheap. I personally found it to be way less food than other places give you, even considering it a local Mexican eat. The food is served almost exclusively on paper plates. Maybe I’m just gigantic, but it’s not nearly enough food, either. I could have ordered more, but I didn’t know what I was up against. Not bad, not great. It’s just an odd kind of place. I don’t get the attachment to it, personally.

Come for the cheap yet tasty margaritas, chips, salsa and beans with cotija cheese. Stay away from the creepy painting of the child behind the bar. m

I have been eating here for five years Often customers are waiting for them to open at 11:00 in the parking area Could use more meat in the steak tacos They don’t offer a crunchy taco Not much to offer for beverages for kids Chicken enchiladas and rice are the bomb! Just as fantastic left over YUMMO

I don’t eat here often. It’s a novelty to me more than it is a dining establishment. It’s a place you have to visit to say that you did, but there are much better options in town for Mexican food. It’s cheap and some of the dishes are hard to screw up even though they seem to find a way. In the past, I’ve tried the ribs and the chicken mole and both were terrible. On the most recent visit, other Unilocalers enjoyed the Chicken Mole, so I was happy to hear that the dish was improved. I typically play it safe, tacos or plate lunch with beef or pork. The chopped beef, in particular, is my preference for taco filling, and I’ve had the plate lunch with beef on more than half of my visits without issue. The rice and beans are usually passable and the flour tortillas are usually great. My most recent experience with the plate lunch was not so good. I decided to order it with pork this time. The pork was good. The tortillas were great. The beans were good. The rice was BURNED! I left it on the plate when I «finished», hoping the cooks would wonder why, but I doubted they would care because they sent it out to begin with. I discreetly told our server, in Spanish to help with the discretion, that the rice was burned. His first response was«I didn’t make it.» Are you f’n kidding me??? I kept my composure and followed up with«I know that(a-hole), but please let the kitchen know about this.» His response to that was«that’s the same way we’ve been cooking our rice for 40 years.» Atthis point, I wanted to lash out and say«really(a-hole), you’ve been *censored* burning your *censored* rice for 40 *censored* years because I don’t remember getting *censored* burned rice here before, you stupid *censored*!!!» Yet, I kept my composure and instead, stewed over this for the rest of dinner, anticipating how I would share my experience on Unilocal. I granted 2 stars because not all of the food sucks and this was the only time I encountered such blatant disregard for customer service. By this time, it took al of my self control to keep from absolutely losing it on this guy. It was a Unilocal UYE, and I didn’t want to ruin dinner for my Unilocal friends nor embarrass them, but I really wanted to grab that guy and shove a pot of the burned rice in his mouth, so he could understand what the hell I was talking about. I was fuming! I didn’t bother telling the manager because I don’t care enough about the place and I couldn’t control what I would say. If they don’t care about the food they put out(and yes I know you get what you pay for, but I didn’t pay for burned rice) or train their staff properly on how you DON’T GETLIPPYWITHTHECUSTOMERS, then to hell with them. I would have made my point with the«tip» I was going to leave but they already put the tip on the bill, the bill that had several drinks added to it from another table. They seemed completely oblivious to this as if it happens all the time. CHECKYOURBILLSATTHISPLACE, PEOPLE! The incompetence extends from the kitchen to the bar and wait staff. There are plenty of people in town who think a good margarita is what makes a good Mexican restaurant and they’ll help keep this place along with other crappy Mexican restaurants open. However, in case I didn’t properly convey my message, I would like to state for the record that I will not go back to Conejito’s, not even on a dare or as a joke.

So. I am totally ok with dives or grungey places if it’s worth it. I will sometimes tolerate sub par service if the food is amazing. But I do not like grungey places with outright rude service and passable food. At this point, I would direct you to Rachel F’s review because I’m pretty much in the second camp. I guess I could sum up like this: I will go to Conejito’s again if I want to spend $ 6 bucks to be glared at with hatred while I eat my decent-ish food and get drunk on terrible margaritas(dude, it’s worth the taste — you get druuuuuuunk). That sounds snarky, but I kind of mean it. I might go back.

Alright, I hate to take away my prior 5 star review, but sadly Conejitos is just not as great as it once one. It’s hard to put my finger on it, but it’s just not the same experience over the past couple of years. The regular staff has all left and the service just doesn’t have the same warmth that it used to. We still enjoy going for eggs, tacos and enchiladas. If you’re looking for a cheap breakfast on a Sunday, order the huevos rancheros. The eggs will fill you up for about $ 6 a person, add a coke and two of us are out of there for about $ 20 with tip. The food is still good, but we do not go out of our way to visit anymore.

Caveat Emptor * New update is indicated so this Saturday we sat in the far back room since the front two rooms was packed. Came along for a bite to eat after taco fest. Not sure if the backroom was such a great idea as we usually get better service up front. One napkin for each person is just not enough for the place setting and type of food we were eating. So after asking the server grabs a ridiculously huge stack and splits it in half for our table. Seriously I only needed only one but it was overly generous. This alone wasn’t very odd but combined with the fact two other drinks getting pushed onto the tab. Needing to be corrected then offering no apology for the«mistake» we expected the automatic tip as our party was 7 but also noticed they bumped it up to 20% afterwards. When it was originally 15% before the correction. What is going on here? I just hope this was an isolated incident and not the mode. *Buyer beware. Food 3 was pretty average chopped beef Mexican meal came with dry rice that tasted like yesterday’s rice almost on the edge of crunchy. The beans were very good. Amb 3 Service 2 hit or miss depending on who you get and when you go. Location 3 Value 4 33⁄2015

Did you get properly smashed at Great Lakes Distillery across the street? Mosey over to Conejitos for dirt cheap Mexican grub served on paper plates. Conejitos is a total dive. It’s the kind of place you can eat in your stained sweatpants and no one will notice. I had the chicken enchiladas and they were alright. I really liked their chunky, spicy salsa(in the red ketchup containers on each table). Chips and guac were subpar. Margaritas aren’t much to write home about. I’m also a bit sketched out that the(very small) menu contains options for«meat» dishes. Not beef. Not steak. Not chicken. «Meat.» Enjoy the mystery! I doubt I would recommend Conejitos, but it’s certainly an experience.

This place is CAFF(Cheap As Frick Food)! You can get a plate of beans, rice, and enchiladas for under $ 5.00! I especially enjoyed the creamy beans and perfectly salted chips. Seriously, the crunchy chips are perfectly salted. Those chip manufacturers need to learn a thing or two from this place. I have nothing bad to say about this place, but nothing really WOWed(except the cheap prices). Don’t be surprised when your food comes on a paper plate. It also costs 25 cents to get a piece of foil for you to cover your paper plate to bring home… lol. I did not finish my enchilada meal and I decided not to bring it home just to avoid paying 25 cents haha. This place might be a good substitute for late night taco bell runs. If only this place served horchata… If this place started serving some cheap and plentiful horchata, I honestly would consider bumping it up a star. HINTHINT TLDR: This place is CAFF and may be a good substitute for late night taco bell runs
