Thank God, there are still a few really good bookstores around! Love their cookbook and garden sections.

Limited selection compared to the chains, but any book store that has staff picks throughout the store that are carefully and thoughtfully chosen. Great store!

Oblong Books & Music is one of the reasons my husband and I bought a house in Millerton. This is a very pleasant, old-fashioned store run by knowledgeable book people. The stock is thoughtfully chosen for its customer base — lots of local interest, gardening, wildlife guides, animal husbandry, crafts, how-to, etc., in addition to a very good selection of current fiction, nonfiction and classics. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Oblong Jr., the children’s bookstore, is particularly well-stocked with YA and middle reader books. Be sure to look for the«Cheap Art» for sale by the cash register. These are charming, small(3“x3″) paintings by local artist Patty Mullins. The $ 5 price goes to buy food for local stray cats.

Love this bookstore. Located in an old building, wide plank floors, great selection of carefully selected books and CDs. A refreshing change from bestseller displays piled high at B&N. Also a great selection of cards for special occasions.

I’m more of a used book store type of person, but as I was recently rambling around Millerton, I decided to check out this little bookstore. Oblong has a small, yet quality driven, selection of books and CDs. I popped into their travel section and found some very nice guides to New York state and the Hudson River Valley and three different styles of road maps for the area. I purchased one guide and one map(sorely needed as I’ve been lost on county roads more than once…). The store also had a nice selection of cards, puzzles, calendars. Oblong also has another location in Rhinebeck. The prices aren’t a steal, but they’re no more expensive than visiting Barnes & Noble — so if you’re buying new, why not support a small business?
