Imagine walking through Muir Woods at night, on a path lined with hundreds of luminaries, gazing at the massive trees soaring above you in the darkness, listening to the sound of water gently cascading over rock, watching in wonder as an almost full moon rises in the sky above you and shines moonbeams through the trees to light your way. Sounds awesome, doesn’t it? It is. The family friendly, pagan-esque Winter Solstice Celebration happens each year on this, the shortest day, at Muir Woods National Monument. Along with the absolutely amazing experience of walking through redwoods lit only by luminaries(and tonight, the moon), they offer bonfires, storytelling, singing, wreath making and hot drinks. Bring your own mug and a flashlight, and be sure the get there pretty early because the parking lots fill up fast.
